Cars That Keep Up on Technology

Automaker presence at CES was huge this year. All the big players showed off the latest in technology having to do with cars. Wireless charging, cloud based services and even self-driving cars became highlights and are continuing to draw attention at the North American Auto Show in Detroit this week. Yet the dilemma with cars is how to keep the technology fresh. If you have a 10 year old car odds are high that much of the technology in it is out of date (like the cassette player in the 2002 I just sold!).

Ford and General Motors recently announced programs that may enable in-car technology to keep up with other technologies in our lives. Both auto behemoths kicked off programs that will open their technology designs to developers. Sort of a semi-open platform approach. Thought is that developers can help create applications to help use the assets the car has while keeping up with needs of the owner. Imagine being able to program radio button 1 to accept voice commands about which playlist to use from your synced smartphone. Or perhaps you can't travel long without a pit stop. Maybe you should program the car to pull up the nearest restrooms when you utter the term 'bathroom.' It would all be possible, and totally dependent on what technologies – perhaps developed for phones or computers – may be popular. The key is the ability to change the use of the cars buttons and features as the technology changes. Gone would be the days of outdated features. You car could meet your technology needs and keep your eyes on the road. We shall see how Ford and GM decide to implement the program, but here's to hoping that someday our cars meet our technology needs as much as our phones do now.

Desktop Jellyfish Tank

Thinkgeek might be a wee bit late to the game as the $381.99 Desktop Jellyfish Tank actually picked up the gong for being the "2011 Best Product" at Global Pet Expo a couple of years back, but as momma used to say, "better late than never", right? Well, the Desktop Jellyfish Tank does as it says – it gives you the opportunity to own a very unique desktop pet that will remain silent and quiet, but is deadly to the touch. At least to us humans, although "Nemo" as depicted in the image above does seem to exhibit a very nonchalant attitude.

The Desktop Jellyfish Tank will arrive with every single thing you need to get started on a jellyfish family, right out of the box so that you lack nothing. It includes the tank (obviously), an air pump and valves, a hydrometer, some substrate, a feeding pipette, and heck, why not jazz things up by a spot with a color-changing LED complete with a remote control so that your pet jellyfish will look cooler than it actually is. You would need to provide your own jellyfish though, and while this 6-gallon tank has been optimized to hold jellyfish, it will still be able to house other kinds of fish and invertebrates.

X-Wing Coffee Table

Is this the ultimate nerd coffee table or what? Barry Shields has spent a good chunk of his time to get fanboys of Star Wars, especially of the X-Wing starfighter, to construct a coffee table that is functional, timeless and beautiful. Taking nearly half a year to carve it out from scratch to its finish, you can be sure that this is one sturdy coffee table, but we warned – the glass can break, as the deflector shields on this thing does not seem to be operational.

According to Barry, both the top and bottom halves which sandwich the glass have been bolted together, so should you bump into it by accident while walking by, it will still remain intact. The front itself comes with 3 points of support contact with the glass, so that whenever the glass moves from bumping and the front landing gear moves, the support arms will still remain intact with the glass. Careful attention is paid to the X-Wing, as the bottom of of the ship is just as detailed as the top. A combination of poplar, pine and black walnut wood is used to ensure that the final product is easy on the eyes, but not too popular with the wallet with its $5,500 price point. Ah well, at least you know this is custom made and one of a kind.

Genius Gila gaming mouse

One word in a particular language might mean an entirely different name in another, and I do wonder whether Genius of Taiwan did their research before they decided to christen their latest 12-Button professional gaming mouse as the flagship model for the GX Gaming Series as the Genius Gila. Basically, "Gila" means crazy, insane, or mad in the context of the Malay language, and I guess if you were to look at it positively, sometimes gamers refer to one another as having "mad skillz" which would mean they are extremely far up in the skill tree, which is meant to be a compliment. Ah well, what else do we know about the Genius Gila? Read on to find out!

The Genius Gila is a 2013 CES Innovations Award Honoree, and it is headed to the North American market, although I am quite sure that if you were to live outside of North America and want one, you can always import it. Touted to deliver unparalleled precision and comfort, the Genius GX Gaming Series Gila is also said to be the "ultimate configurable gaming mouse." Not too sure if that holds true or not, as you would need to get used to the dozen buttons on the Gila which can be tweaked according to your preferences.

Features on the Genius Gila include on-the-fly DPI changes (200 to 8200), weights that cater to different people for the "feel" of the mouse, adjustable levels for the LED brightness, pulsation and color, in addition to programming your own macros for a personalized playing style.

FPS gamers will find the Gila's "Sniper Mode" to be ideal, as it slows down mouse movements to a dpi of your choice as long as you hold down the assigned button. I guess this is more science than a reflex flick of the wrist, leading to less impressive shots compared to yesteryears. Who can forget those flick, fire and forget rail shots in Quake 3 that needed no sissy zoom? How about the original Half Life that saw the quick zoom in of the crossbow before letting a shot loose and zooming out to follow it up with a grenade from the machine gun? We skilled gamers didn't need such tools, and it sure as heck impressed far more back then.

I guess things work differently now, and the Genius GX Gaming Series Gila can be yours for $99.99 if you are interested.

Classic White PS3 Instant Game Collection Bundle

A few days ago, we heard of our neighbors living in the Great White North (that would be Canada just in case you were wondering) would be on the receiving end of the white colored PS3 from Sony, and it is comforting to know that folks living Stateside have not been overlooked. In fact, it has been announced that Sony will make available the Classic White PS3 Instant Game Collection Bundle in the US, where it will be accompanied by a 1-year membership to PlayStation Plus. This is definitely one of the more pleasant pieces of news to start off the relatively young year, don't you think so?

At least this means that folks living in the US and Canada will be able to have access to the Sony PS3 in a color other than boring old black. When you throw in PlayStation Plus that has seen more than a 57% increase in memberships since June last year, you are more or less looking at the ultimate game bundle for just about any avid video game fan. In fact, last year saw PlayStation Plus members received over 50 free and 270 discounted PS3 games, in addition to over 90 add-ons for the PS3 and eight free PS Vita games. How’s that when it comes to value for your hard earned money, huh?

This Classic White PS3 Instant Game Collection Bundle will arrive in the US and Canada this coming January 27th, where it will cost you three Benjamins (that would be $299.99 if you want to be exact in your accounting). Inside the bundle, you will find the Classic White PS3 system that sports a 500GB hard disk drive inside, apart from the aforementioned one-year membership to PlayStation Plus. This gives you unlimited access to a regularly refreshed library of a dozen PS3 games alongside half a dozen games for the PS Vita, and not only that, new games will also be added each month.
