Ion Audio’s COZ-E: The Electric Snuggie

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 04:37 PM PDT

I suppose that I couldn’t come up with a better description of the COZ-E other than “an electric Snuggie”.

The COZ-E is essentially an electric blanket with sleeves, and it has a control pad with a green light for low heat, a yellow light for medium heat, and a red light for high heat.

I got a chance to try it out, and I found that the COZ-E did not fit very well. I found that it draped all over the place, making it difficult to walk. I believe that I was suppose to wear it so it opens in the back, so if I was on a couch or chair, the COZ-E would totally cover me. If I wore it so the opening is in front, it is like a small robe without a sash.

Also, I was disappointed that the COZ-E had to be plugged into the wall. It means that the user has to unplug it whenever he or she has to get up and walk around, and there is no pocket to put the cord. This cord to the COZ-E doesn’t detach easily, either. Perhaps the future COZ-E could be battery powered.

I realize that I haven’t said many positive things about the COZ-E, but much of this is because I am sort of negative toward “Snuggie culture”. My admittedly biased point-of-view just sees the people using Snuggies as this pure sedentary people.

However, I realize I need to get over that (probably), and if you do want a COZ-E, you should be able to purchase it on Ion Audio’s site for about $49.95.

Sharp unveils the Galapagos 003SH and 005SH, with glasses-free 3D screens

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 04:01 PM PDT

Sharp has recently unveiled some interesting smartphones that have a huge selling point: glasses-free 3D screens.

I suppose that we all knew that naked-eye 3D was possible with the Nintendo 3DS, so why not create a smartphone that can do the same? These Galapagos series phones come in two forms: the 003SH (top left) and the 005SH.

The 003SH’s 3D screen is 3.8 inches with 800 x 480 resolution with touchscreen capability. It has powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) and has 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a digital TV tuner. The camera is a 9.6 Megapixel CCD camera with 720p video recording. As for the Galapagos 005SH, the details with photo are after the jump.

The 005SH has pretty much the exact same features, but it comes with a “QWERTY keyboard with 4-way D-pad”. It also has a microSDHC slot for 32GB memory enhancement. The camera is also different at 8 Megapixels, but it has the 720p video capability.

These two phones will be available from SoftBank mobile, Japan’s third largest mobile carrier. The 003SH is set for next month while the 005SH will launch sometime in February.

I am wondering if this is a signal to cell phone companies to make displays in glass-free 3D, just like all displays are in color now instead of monochromatic. Yet another development in technology that will soon turn your present phone into a dinosaur.

University of Arizona working on Holographic Telecommuting

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 03:28 PM PDT

Apparently, someone really wants an age of holographic telecommuting. So that when we want to talk with someone on the phone or webcam, we will see an actual life-sized hologram of the person that we are talking to, like in Star Wars.

I’m seen some attempts at creating this effect, such as will.i.am’s coverage of the 2008 election on CNN, plus this other glass-projection at the International Stationery and Office Products Fair in Tokyo, Japan.

Some researchers at the University of Arizona are very intent on creating holographic videos in real-time, and recording one’s holographic “telepresence” is as difficult as you might think.

It requires the setup of about 16 different holographic cameras in a semi circle format around the callers. These specialized cameras then shoot an individual image, and then store the images in such a way so a new holographic “frame” can show up every 2 seconds.

Keep in mind that most video is shown at 30 frames per second, so you would probably see the lag time of these current holographic calls. However, it used to be the image refresh on a holographic set-up such as this was once every 4 minutes.

Well, I suppose that we can all imagine the world this perfected holographic telecommuting technology will create. I can’t wait to see the new holographic online world.

Digital License Plates with Pop Up Ads? – Really?

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 09:20 AM PDT

A San Francisco based company is on the brink of making big news with SMARTPLATES, a high tech digital license plate that functions as a regular plate while the vehicle is in motion but if the vehicle stops for 4 seconds or more, like when you're at a red light or stuck in traffic they will make the delay so much more pleasant by accosting you with advertisements or important news and information.

California, the first US states to consider such plates in order to decrease the ever expanding $19 billion dollar deficit will require potential advertisers to apply directly to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

A bill is currently in the state assembly that, if passed will pave the way for for this new technology to be studied for safety and effectiveness, even the California State Highway Patrol will be consulted, at the manufacturers cost, to determine their viability.

It seems that other states are researching the feasibility of sprucing up the back of our beloved cars and the income stream they may, or may not represent, so digital license plates really could be the wave of the future.

It could be useful, I suppose, in broadcasting Amber Alerts or maybe the cops can broadcast a message to a felons plate and make it flash "most wanted" or "this car is stolen" okay, probably not, the whole thing just sounds dumb, which means it will probably happen, right?

Able Planet Extreme Foldable Active Noise Canceling Headphones

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 06:25 PM PDT

I have reviewed many Able Planet headphones before, and the last was a year ago with the True Fidelity Active Noise Canceling Headphones.

The company was nice enough to send me one of their latest products with the Foldable Active Noise Cancelling Headphones (with LINX AUDIO technology). I would have to say that this is one of the company’s best.

When worn on my ears, the XNC230W almost completely shuts off the rest of the world. The sound comes through as clear as can be, and I am completely “in” whatever I am watching with them.

Unlike most of the headphones in the Able Planet series, the Extreme Foldable Active Noise Canceling Headphones come in more colors than just black. As you can see in this photo, it comes in white, black, and red, as well as pink/gray/black, red/black/white, and turquoise/black/white. The product has won many awards, including 25 International CES and CTIA awards for its state-of-the-art active noise cancellation (ANC).

The Extreme Foldable Active Noise Cancelling Headphones can be purchased on the Able Planet website now. It costs about $149.99 and requires one AAA battery, which is included. Also included in the unit is a soft carrying pouch and a 1/4 Home Stereo adapter.
