Holocube Touch is another step for a holographic world

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 03:10 PM PDT

It has been a while since we covered the Holocube, a box that contains at least 40GB worth of holographic video footage.

The Holocube has received an upgrade with the Holocube Touch. All the original designer did was add a touchscreen, which is pretty much on every device these days.

There is a video of it after the jump if you want to see how it works. You will note how the touched icons leap out and spin and interact in 3-D. This video footage is only 22 seconds long, which is a real shame, because I really want to see the limits of holograms being pushed.

Still, it is on more step in the holographic culture that we all saw in Star Wars and is now a convention of many a science-fiction movie. Another step is being taken to get this tech going as the designers are creating a 42-inch version of this guy.

I can’t help but think that this Holocube Touch is going to be the next big thing, as anytime someone puts “Touch” after something usually means it takes the place of the original product. After all, look at the iPod Touch, it is totally making the iPod classic go out of style.

TVHat makes your portable video watching private

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 02:47 PM PDT

Every time I review video goggles like the myvu or the Vuzix, I can’t help but wonder why this doesn’t catch on.

After all, I love to watch videos, and if I can watch them on a Portable Media Player (PMP) in private, why shouldn’t I? Perhaps it is because many of these video goggles make you look really geeky, like Cyclops from X-men. In other words, they are not something most people would feel comfortable wearing in public without feeling like they are actively committing a serious fashion faux-pas.

Of course, if you really want to talk about silly video goggles, let’s talk the TV Hat. This oversized baseball hat is made to hold an iPod, iPhone, or any other portable media player with a small screen. The 2.5x magnification screen coupled with the flaps around the hat create an effect not unlike being in a movie theater. I’m guessing that the headphones will be sold separately.

So, if you want to watch some videos with some degree of portable privacy, than the TV Hat is probably your PMP accessory. If you don’t mind looking a little weird, of course.

You should be able to pick up the TV Hat at the Things You Never Knew Existed site for about $29.98.

Colorful Desktop USB Fans

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 02:44 PM PDT

Along with summer comes too hot conditions, sometimes even indoors.  If your office doesn’t quite get cool enough over the summer, you could always pick up one of these USB fans.  If you like bright colors then this would definitely be the way to go.  These small fans would be a little small to cool off a whole room, but they’re the right size to keep the person operating the computer from overheating.

Since computers do generate heat, this would be a good idea for anyone that has a hard time with the warm weather.  These pull their power from any available USB port you might have handy.  On the fan itself is an On/Off switch.  Unfortunately it doesn’t rotate at all to keep the air moving, but it is just a small desktop fan.  You can find it through Green House.  Since it is a Japanese company though, this one could be tricky to get your hands on.

USB Alarm for your notebook

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 02:07 PM PDT

This has to be the strangest form of protection for your laptop that you could manage to buy.  With this around if anyone goes tampering with your USB ports, everyone within hearing range will know about it.  They’ll also know if you forget about the alarm and just start unplugging things at random, which tends to happen when you’ve been up too late working on your computer.

You just plug it into the USB port and turn it on.  Then if someone tries to unplug things in order to easily steal your laptop, an alarm will sound.  The big catch is, if you have an observant criminal, all they have to do is shut off the side switch.  Then again, if you’re rushing to stash a laptop, a little white box might fly under the radar.  You can purchase this USB Notebook Crime Prevention Sensor for ¥2,400.00 or about $26 through Geek Stuff 4U.

Xbox 360 Afterglow Controllers

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 01:49 PM PDT

Gaming in the dark is always way more fun than with the lights on.  Especially if you’re into horror games.  Well for those of you that prefer your games be played with the lights off, you should pick up one of these controllers.  In the daylight they just look like a strange little controller, but at night their lights will shine bright enough to give a mini light show.

The Afterglow Controller works well with the Xbox 360 and appears to come in 3 different colors.  However, you can’t actually choose a color, the color shipped to you will be chosen at random.  I’m not sure I’d like that a whole lot, but I can’t say that I really dislike any of the 3 colors.  Right now these can only be pre-ordered, but they’ll ship out as of the 23rd of this month.  At that time it’ll cost you $29.99 per controller from EB Games.
