Bye-5: Turn off the lights by slapping it some skin

Posted: 19 May 2011 04:14 PM PDT

I have no idea of who invented the high-five, but this hand-to-hand slap has become one of the first things we learn. We are always so proud when our little babies can high five. Yes, there is something very positive about this hand slap, and designer Da Deng has channeled this positive energy into a device that can save energy.

This is the Bye-5 light switch, and it is an ever present reminder to the user to shut off the lights after he or she leaves a room. I’m pretty certain that if consumers would simply shut off the lights of any room that they leave, we would probably save some really big number on electricity each year. But I’m probably sure that you already know that statistic.

The Bye-5 is shaped like a hand, and it even has a skin-like texture. I’m not certain what that means, but it will hopefully sound and feel like a real hand. The user slaps it on the way out, and it even glows in the dark, so you won’t lose your way after the lights are off.

Sadly, the Bye-5 Light Switch is still a concept for now, but I could see it becoming a reality. Perhaps it will become one of those “As Seen on TV” products.

RecognizeMe relies on facial recognition to unlock an iPhone

Posted: 19 May 2011 04:00 PM PDT

A few days ago, we reported on the Hoyos Eyelock USB Iris Scanner that allows the user to enter their laptop or desktop device via eye-scan. All it takes is just connecting it via USB, but what if you could get similar security on your mobile phone?

The technology is already here. What you can see in the picture and in the video after the jump is RecognizeMe, an App that is only available on jailbroken iPhones. This App uses the Facetime camera in order to recognized the registered user, and only then will it unlock the phone.

So who needs fingerswipes and passwords? Just look at the iPhone, which is something that you are probably doing anyway if you have your iPhone on hand.

By the way, there are apparently a lot of setting thresholds and all sorts of ways to insure that your evil identical twin brother or sister can’t get into your valuable information. I wonder how it can do that, and if it would work if you were wearing glasses. I also don’t have any word on how long it takes to scan your face. If it takes any longer than immediately, then this App is rather counter-productive.

Anyway, for all you jailbroken iPhone users out there, RecognizeMe is developed by Apocolipse at a price of $7.

See a real bionic hand in action!

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:14 PM PDT

We have reported on bionic limbs before, such as the i-LIMB. I suppose that what fascinates me most about bionics is how we have jumped from science fiction to science fact in such a short time.

A recent video from BBC News shows an amputee named Patrick from Austria and his artificial hand. I can’t import the video on the site, but you can see that Patrick is able to do some pretty complex movements like pouring a bottle or tying his shoelaces by clicking this link here.

What makes it really amazing is that the hand is a neuroprosthetic, which means that it can tap into the unused nerves used to movement of the hand for even greater control.

I can’t help but watch this video and think of the scene in The Empire Strikes Back, where Luke Skywalker is trying out his new artificial hand. Especially at the end of the video, where the scientist is asking Patrick to do certain actions with his hand. All that is missing is the medical droid poking his fingers with a needle.

However, I don’t want to seem insensitive to Patrick, as it was a tragic electrocution accident that took his arm. In other words, if I was missing a limb, I might not find it so cool, even with a replacement limb like this one. The fact that bionics are helping amputees get more advanced implants infuses me with a great sense of wonder about medical technology.

Wet Smartphone Emergency Kit – CPR for your iPhone?

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:52 AM PDT

Here's a story thats hard to believe, a few years ago, I left my cell phone out by the pool and that afternoon there was a horrible rainstorm that fried it. That same evening, as I lamented the loss of my phone, a band of thugs kicked in the front door of our home and robbed the house while I hid behind a clothing rack, with my fried phone in hand. While most of us have dropped a phone in a sink, toilet or tub, I doubt too many folks have wished for this next product as much as I did…

Meet the Wet Smartphone Emergency kit from Dry-All, originally used to protect moisture sensitive military equipment.  It has been used to keep gun safes dry and for moisture removal for hearing aids. It is now being used for drying wet cell phones, wet smart phones, wet electronic tablets, wet iPods, ipads and other electronic items. This kit absorbs all of the moisture in the wet phone quickly, allowing the phone to continue working as normal without losing your contacts, applications, pictures, or music. Woo-Hoo!

The Wet Smartphone Emergency Kit has been independently tested and guaranteed to dry all types of cell phones that have been exposed to any type of moisture. DRY-ALL president Sean Gutierrez works hard to ensure that they only produce quality products. “We believe people need to stay connected and mobile phones are essential. Our customers can save time, money, their contacts, applications, pictures, music and the headache of dealing with insurance companies all at home with our DRY-ALL products.”

The Wet Smartphone Emergency Kit, much like an emergency medical kit, is always a good idea to have on hand in case of a wet cell phone emergency. The kit boasts a 100% success rate when all of the products’ directions are followed. At that rate of success, why not have one for emergencies, you know, like when you're shivering behind your clothes while strangers take all your stuff and load it into your car!

Emergency Dry Kits start at around $25 bucks and can be purchased at www.amazon.com

mophie announces juice pack plus that plays nice with the iPhone 4

Posted: 19 May 2011 07:30 AM PDT

The iPhone 4 camp is divided into two – one that bats for AT&T, while the other are clearly comfortable being part of the CDMA iPhone group from Verizon Wireless. That might mean there are even more iPhone 4 owners in the US than originally thought, but it poses a connundrum for accessories manufacturers, as they will now have to release two versions for the iPhone 4 for most of the time (due to the slight hardware difference).

Well, mophie has had plenty of experience with iPhone accessories over the years, and their latest foray would be the juice pack plus that will be compatible with both the CDMA and GSM versions of the iPhone 4. The juice pack plus is actually an enhanced capacity rechargeable external battery case that will offer more than double the running time, making it an essential accessory for any iPhone user who currently already needs to juice up their handset at least once in the day.

Not only that, mophie has also rolled out a special edition purple juice pack plus case to commemorate the situation. The mophie juice pack plus is capable of offering up to 2,000 mAh battery capacity, and that makes it the largest of any external battery case that is produced by mophie to date. Apart from that, the case itself sports an ultra-thin and light-weight design, with a dual injected rubber grip for extra grip – perfect for those who tend to have sweaty palms.

Despite all the extra,s the mophie juice pack plus is a mere millimeter thicker than mophie’s flagship case, the juice pack air. The special edition purple juice pack plus will actually see a limited production run of just 3,000, where you get a purple band right around the edge of the case. For those who want more colors in their case, additional ones will include black-on-black, and black with cyan, magenta or yellow banding.

TO put things in perspective, how much more punch does a 2,000 mAh battery capacity pack? How about the equivalent of 8 more hours of talk time on 3G, or 7 more hours of Internet surfing? Your ears will also appreciate 44 hours of additional audio playback, and 11 hours of video playback.

Vuzix announces STAR Video Eyewear

Posted: 19 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Vuzix has just announced a spanking new STAR (See-Through Augmented Reality) Video Eyewear, also known as the STAR 1200, where it is actually a see-through AR-enabled binocular Video Eyewear which is tipped to see action across a wide range of industrial, commercial, defense and some consumer applications. Vuzix is no stranger to the video eyewear industry, having had their fair share of releases for the mass market over the years, but augmented reality? That’s treading new ground for sure.

Just what does this new display do? It will enable users to view the real world scene – all the while viewing relevant computer generated information, graphics and alerts. Hopefully your brain will be able to drink in all the additional information, and surely it will take some time to get used to what you’re seeing via the new AR glasses.

Each pair of the STAR 1200 will offer connectivity to VGA, component and composite video sources. Boasting 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) motion tracking sensors and an integrated camera that is used for tracking and recognizing the real world, it will enable 3D computer generated content to be locked in place when wherever you turn is overlaid within the real worldview.

Bear in mind that the STAR is actually Vuzix’ maiden outing in the see-through AR-enabled Video Eyewear environment, boasting a native 16:9 format that delivers full color WVGA (852 x 480 resolution) support with its integrated camera and sensors for AR tracking. As for the see-through displays, those will offer a video viewing experience that is somewhat equivalent to a 60″ flat panel TV from 10 feet away. In addition, the STAR 1200 is also touted to be the first high-resolution 16:9 widescreen video eyewear in the world that has arrived on the mass market scene.

It is widely expected for the STAR to ship sometime in August this year, and Vuzix will appreciate the faith of all advance order customers of the current Wrap 920AR Video Eyewear immediately by letting them be eligible for application development and testing purposes without any additional charge, letting them immediately use Vuzix’ current Software Developer Kit (SDK) and 3D AR creation tool known as MaxReality.

Wearable Tent looks far out, some might even say crazy

Posted: 19 May 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Here’s a quick question – just how the heck do you think you would draw out a Wearable Tent if someone asked you to do so? For those with less than active imaginations, you can stash the pencil and paper away, checking out the Wearable Tent from Hammacher instead. This tent is meant for one – just one, no two ways about it. Functioning as a jacket, you can also choose to convert it to a lightweight sleeping bag and shelter within minutes.

Hmmm, that seems to take longer than what some convertibles are able to when it comes to having the hood up, where it will offer an impromptu overnight accommodation sans the bulk and weight of traditional separate items. Fully waterproof, it is made out of breathable urethane-coated material, where this rip-stop nylon rain jacket can stash away the integrated three-season sleeping bag and the shelter in separate zippered pouches. With integrated elastic suspenders, they do their bit in distributing the sleeping bag’s weight across the shoulders, while an attached mosquito net deters insects.

The shelter will pull over the head, neck, and shoulders in order to form a wedge thanks to a couple of semi-circular panels which divert rain when lying supine, whereas straps are attached with hook-and-loop fasteners located beneath the body, delivering the shelter’s rigidity. The Wearable Tent can be purchased for $249.95.
