Boring but Sensible Gifts

Face it. Not every gift is a revolutionary product. Yet I think we have all been in that situation where we get something totally practical and proceed to use it (and think of the gift-er) for years. So why not take a sensible approach to gift giving?

Protection On the Ready

I may date myself, but did any other ladies have pepper spray in their backpack in college? Walking across campus at night was easier knowing that you could carry it. But I also did not take the backpack to parties. So needless to say the pepper spray stayed home on the weekends – though I sure would have felt more secure with it.

Feeling a similar concern but knowing college students rarely travel without their smart phone, a father of a co-ed came up with a useful concept which launched in August. SprayTect provides a pepper spray canister right in the convenience of an iPhone (4, 4S) case. In the back of the case is a detachable cartridge that does not disturb web, camera or talk features. To fire SprayTect simply pull the 'safety', rotate the canister and spray. Yes, the safety prevents errant pepper spray in the backpack.  And the cartridge is removable for times when you feel safe. To get comfortable with firing SprayTect a test cartridge – in addition to a full one – come with the case. And as a sort of design bonus, you can actually use the case/canister container as a kickstand for your phone. Other smartphone models of SprayTect are coming too. Pick up a SprayTect for you or your loved one in black, white, turquoise or pink for just $39.95 on Amazon.com. The peace of mind provided are invaluable.

Satechi X-Pointer mobile presenter and Stylus Touch Pen for iPhone

You can say that a device like the iPhone has more than its fair share of accessories over the years, and this trend does not seem as though it is going to slow down anytime soon, let alone stop. Here we are with the Satechi X-Pointer mobile presenter and Stylus Touch Pen that was announced specially for the iPhone, with the former being controlled using the X-Presenter app that enables users to have the kind of unprecedented freedom, scrolling through through PowerPoint or Keynote presentation slides while ensuring the audience's attention is directed thanks to the included red laser – like moth to a flame, you could say that.

For starters, the X-Presenter App will activate the X-Pointer’s red laser that in turn is attached to the iPhone via the smartphone's 3.5mm jack. Not only that, the X-Presenter app is also capable of taking full control over the computer’s mouse using the app’s Mouse Mode function, turning this into an ideal all-in-one solution for business folks who are always on the go. It measures a mere 1.6 inches in length and tips the scales at just an ounce, making the X-Pointer extremely portable and mobile to be stashed away just about anywhere on your travels. Satechi is kind enough to include the Stylus Touch Pen that doubles up as a storage compartment for the X-Pointer laser whenever it is not in use, apart from being the precise touch-screen navigation tool, of course.

Apart from that, there is a rubber 3.5mm jack that you can affix the laser and pointer to the iPhone whenever the Stylus Touch Pen is not in use. Satechi has decided to make available the Satechi X-Pointer for $29.99, where you can download the X-Presenter app for free over at the Apple App Store. This is an introductory price, mind you, so we are not too sure just for how long the price point is going to remain.

AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy Camera availability

When it comes to digital cameras, this particular market is split right down the middle, although there are others who say that we are looking at three different niches here. First, there is the mass consumer level digital cameras, and then we have the Micro Four Thirds category, followed by of course, the DSLR camp. Today, we will look at the first category with AT&T having announced that they will make available the Samsung Galaxy Camera from November 16th onwards at a relatively affordable price point of $499.99. Of course, it is a wee bit more expensive compared to other normal digital cameras in the market, but then again do bear in mind that this is a 4G connected camera, which adds to some semblance of advanced machinery to a regular shooter.

Not only that, folks who are already on a tight budget will find that for a limited time only, AT&T customers are able to receive up to $100 off the purchase of a second Samsung Galaxy handset or other Samsung connected device – talk about a marketing ploy to push more Samsung-branded devices into your home's consumer electronics ecosystem. Back to the Samsung Galaxy Camera, it merges high performance photography with the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, working in tandem with AT&T's 4G mobile internet. As a result, you end up with a powerful point-and-shoot camera that boasts of a familiar, intuitive user interface, with of course, the much vaunted access to Android applications via the Google Play market.

Just to recap, some of the hardware specifications packed into the Samsung Galaxy Camera include a 4.8-inch HD Super Clear LCD display, sporting a 21x optical zoom lens and a super-bright 16-megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor that allows you to capture high-quality images close up as well as in low light conditions. It runs off a quad-core 1.4GHz processor that delivers quick and responsive performance, while you get to enjoy powerful manual controls with its Expert Mode that enables you to fiddle with manual settings of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

Anyone interested in the Samsung Galaxy Camera from AT&T?

All Terrain Electric Bicycle

We have heard of and seen electric bicycles before, but what you read about here today does seem as though it hails from the Batcave – especially when you consider how a bicycle is not meant to handle rough terrain unless it is a mountain bike, but the $9,700 All Terrain Electric Bicycle gets the job done – and in style, to boot. Yes sir, the price tag does seem to be extremely prohibitive, but you ought to remember that kind of good money that you fork out comes with quality, considering how it was designed by an aerospace engineer.

The All Terrain Electric Bicycle is the only electric bicycle of its kind that is capable of traversing deserts and tundras without batting an eyelid, and yet being fully at home gliding across pavements. It boasts of a 600-watt brushless electric motor that will drive a 14-speed gearing configuration, capable of hitting speeds of up to 40 mph on straightaways and unparalleled torque so that you can climb steep areas quickly. With a 51″-wide wheel base and 20″ diameter x 8″ wide tubeless monocoque tires, unparalleled stability is ensured during tight turns while delivering traction on dirt, sand, or snow.
