Don’t text while you drive!

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:36 PM PST

The cell phone is often a curse as much as it is a boon to modern society – after all, how many of you have gotten out of a tight spot simply because you had your phone on you, and managed to ring for some help in the nick of time? Of course, there is a flipside to all of this – one of the main ones being letting technology control your lives. I am pretty sure that many of you have seen people walking down the street without once looking up from a tiny little display in the palm of their hands, but somehow they can magically avoid their fellow phone users even on the busiest of streets. Well, texting while driving is another minus point that will not only endanger your life, but that of others sharing the road with you. Location Labs intends to put a stop to texting while driving with its DriveSmart Plus application on T-Mobile devices, making it the industry’s first carrier-grade service to help prevent texting while driving, specifically designed for T-Mobile customers with Android smartphones.

Just what does DriveSmart Plus do? Well, this is a subscription-based, opt-in service that will automatically detect when a handset user is driving and sets the phone into a ‘Driving Mode’. Whenever the service is activated, it will disable most texting and calling features to the handset while the car is moving, and this is hoped that it will ultimately decrease the possibility of unsafe, distracted driving. After all, T-Mobile knows that with phones getting more and more data centric, it also opens up a whole new world of interactivity, and that might just distract you from what’s ahead on the road only to lead to unspeakable heartache. Nice to see companies and corporations take up responsibility to make sure everything around us is safer and better.

This move will make it the industry’s first carrier-branded service that helps prevent texting while driving, and it will also send incoming calls directly to voicemail and prevent access to text messages, except via applications specified by the customer. In addition, an auto-response text message is sent to the person who phoned or texted alerting them the recipient is driving and unavailable to receive calls or messages. Of course, you can override the ‘Driving Mode’ in the event of an emergency, so at the end of the day, it really boils down to your personal choice and discipline. DriveSmart Plus can be downloaded onto the LG Optimus T although support for more devices are on their way.

LEGO Angry Birds

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:22 PM PST

Well well, what else can we say about the Angry Birds phenomenon that seemed to have swept across the whole world, starting off with the iOS platform before it hit the other markets? Here we have the Angry Birds franchise appear in all its blocky glory, making you wonder whether that is what the game would look like if it were to be translated into an 8-bit program. We’re talking about using good old LEGO bricks to construct these Angry Birds, where the entire collection looks deadly enough if you happen to hurl them at anyone. Of course, the three little blue birds that are split from a solitary one looks far too small to be of any worth, but you know what they say – a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. The giant red bird and Mighty Eagle are missing though, but Tsang Yiu Keung, the brains (and hands) behind this, is working on both.

Epson PowerLite 1835 projector unveiled

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:13 PM PST

Epson has pulled up the curtains that have been hiding the PowerLite 1835 projector all this while, where this model will target both the corporate and higher education markets by delivering setup flexibility, future proof connectivity, advanced networking, 3,500 lumens of color and white light output and XGA resolution, all rolled into a single package. It isn’t too expensive either at $1,199 a pop accompanied by a two year limited warranty, so if your company or home is in need of a new projector without having to think about wireless HDMI and all the newer technologies, then the PowerLite 1835 is shaping up to be a pretty attractive candidate.

What the Epson PowerLite 1835 delivers is setup, connectivity and networking features that is perfect for just about any boardroom or classroom, where among them include image adjustment capability that lets the horizontal keystone square the image even if the projector is placed off-center from the screen. The Quick Corner function will enable any four corners of an image to be adjusted independently for a perfectly rectangular picture. As for positioning flexibility, you will get 1.6x optical zoom that enables larger images to be viewed from shorter throw distances while doing away with the need for dead spaces. As for its 16-degree tilt, this enables images to be projected higher on the wall for better viewing anywhere in the room.

Connectivity options are aplenty – while you won’t get wireless HDMI, stock HDMI is more than capable of delivering a similar high-quality digital video and audio experience although you will still need to watch out for those snaking cables around the home, with USB Plug ‘n Play transferring image, sound and mouse control via a single cable. There is also a PC-free Presentation option, letting you access your plugged in USB memory devices sans a computer as a middleman, while an optional wireless connection allows for peer-to-peer presentations as well as advanced wireless networking.

Dog Dung Vacuum

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:07 PM PST

Caring for Fido is no mean task – not only do you need to make sure that your pooch is potty trained around the house (be it indoors or outdoors), you will also need to make sure that your four-legged friend is well behaved in private and in public, where going through an obedience class is more often than not something most dog owners should take up if they want to have an outstanding canine citizen. When it comes to the issue of poop, I am still amazed that there are people out there who do not bother to pick up after their own dog, so if you know someone like that, perhaps getting the Dog Dung Vacuum might do them a world of good (while dropping a subtle hint, of course). This device will vacuum your pet’s waste into a disposable bag, doing away with the need to bend over and scoop the excrement by hand. This is made possible thanks to a 30,000-rpm motor that makes quick work of sucking up dog waste from grass, concrete, or even snow-covered ground into a plastic bag that removes for ease of disposal. A 12-hour charge offers up to 50 suction moments, making every penny of the $99.95 spent on this well worth it.

Meco Press creates giant Lego blocks made of mud

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:05 PM PST

What you are seeing here is not a Lego block, but a building brick made of mud.

A CEO named Thierry Perrocheau has come up with a method that will allow people in third world countries to build homes and other buildings out of a material that they have a lot of: Mud.

These bricks are made with a Meco Press. With a little bit of binding material and a whole lot of mud, you have a stacking brick. It looks like the brick only come in one size: 1 x 4 x 4.

The Press could be used to construct blocks in eighty percent of the known world. I wonder if this guy is going to make his Meco Press in all shapes of Lego pieces. That would be an interesting way to build a house: just follow the Lego house from the catalog.

Unfortunately, it takes about 30 minutes to create one of these blocks. From there, it is possible for the user to create structures that are two stories tall.

All in all, I hope to see more of this. As my source says, who wouldn’t want a construction site where materials are found on the site itself? Perhaps a machine could be made to make building materials out of anything.

Mix Bowling and Pool with the game of Knokkers (yeah, that’s what it’s called)

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 03:38 PM PST

This is a game called Knokkers, and yes, I realize that sounds like a vulgar name for certain female body parts, but I want you to put that out of your mind.

Completely out of your mind. Now, put into your mind some very manly sports of bowling and pool. Knokkers is the combination of those sports, and you’re looking at it here.

Knockers doesn’t use a cue, but it has all the balls of regular 8-ball pool, but they are the size and weight of six-pound bowling balls. The “table” that you see here is made for the ground, and is about four times larger in area.

As said before, the only cue here is the player, and you can pick up and move the cue ball. Of course, the player cannot move his or her feet once the ball has been touched.

It is designed by Steve Wienecke, a former semi-pro football player and cage fighter, and this was built in the athlete’s backyard in Fredericktown, Missouri with railroad ties, gravel, and concrete.

I don’t really see any new Knokkers leagues being formed. I wonder if someone wants to make a Knokkers kit so people can do this in their own backyard. Okay, I really hate this game’s name! It sounds like I mean something else. Can we change it please?

Control the volume of your portable device through your jacket zipper with the Zip Jacket

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 03:17 PM PST

I think that the clothing industry is responding to the needs of the mobile industry. After all, my wife owns at least two or three sweaters that have a pocket for a phone or an MP3 player.

This particular jacket by Jennifer Darmour is the Zip. It is a stylish jacket that a unique ability for the user to control the volume via the zipper.

That’s right, you can zip up the jacket to turn your volume up or down to turn it down. There is a video after the jump if you don’t believe me.

Of course, I can’t really say that having a volume control in the zipper is practical. I mean, what if it is a cold day out and you need to zip down your jacket? It will certainly turn down your music.

Still, I like all Isn’t there some way to put this zipper on the jacket so it is as non-functional as some of the zippers on Michael Jackson’s jacket circa the eighties?

I’m sure that they will work out the details, and isn’t that lady nice-looking? By the way, there are some retractable earbuds to prevent them from bouncing around the neck.

EVD-01 Emergency Disaster Vehicle from Daiwa House

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 06:06 PM PST

I’ve discovered a way to survive the coming apocalypse with Japanese home builder Daiwa House. They have created the EDV-01 or Emergency Diaster Vehicle that can be ready in four minutes with just a touch a button.

The house has two floors, a restroom, small kitchen, beds, shower, refrigerator, LED lights, as well as a satellite-powered data transfer for use of a cell phone and PC in an emergency. The unit is sized at 6058 x 2591 x 2438 mm and weighs in at 10 tons.

In case you’re wondering what it takes for power, it has solar panels and allows a battery and a fuel cell. It is designed to be easily shippable on the back of a semi, on the back of a freighter, or latched in the bottom of a helicopter.

For some odd reason, I don’t have a price for this guy. However, let me put it into perspective. Surviving through the next zombie attack: priceless. Yeah, I’m pretty certain this will run you a few thousand thousand dollars.

I wonder how the market would be on these EDV-01 were to sell during the Cuban Missile Crisis or sometime when bomb shelters were in fashion. Perhaps someone should accessorize these survival shelters.
