LCD Pinball display at Nike store in Spain

Posted: 05 Jul 2010 01:59 PM PDT

Some of you might remember a few years ago when we reported on a pinball machine with a plasma screen. The device in question looked like the image to the right.

However, if you hit the jump, you can watch a video of a digital pinball machine that takes this technology to the next level. As you can see, this Nike pinball machine, located in Spain, is not limited to a backboard to achieve its theme.

Right now, it is set to a “soccer” theme as part of Nike’s “Write the Future” campaign for the World Cup. You will even note that the pinball is a soccer ball and the flippers are Nike Shoes. Okay, that last part is just shameless promotion, but if there is one thing that Nike is good for, it is promotion.

However, I don’t see why this pinball machine couldn’t be some other theme. Say you like Indiana Jones, for example. Then the pinball could be the giant rolling rock at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark and have the flippers be guns or mini-Indys, or something.

My point is that having two displays can make for pinball machines with very interesting and unlimited effects. Of course, the ball is virtual, so you might not have the element of tilting that you might have been able to do before. I guess with every technological advancement, there is a loss.

Countertop display tells you what to do with your food

Posted: 05 Jul 2010 01:36 PM PDT

Some of you might remember when we reported on the Smart Fridge that can tally the food in your fridge, and even figure out what recipes to make from them.

This is the Oasis system, which takes essentially the same technology and puts it on the kitchen countertop. For example, slapping a side of beef on the countertop will cause the nutritional stats to be displayed next to it, thanks to the pico-projector that is mounted above the counter.

When you put the green pepper beside it, you can get a whole bunch of great recipes. I would assume that it would suggest steak fajitas. I wonder if you assemble all the ingredients, it will even show you the recipes with videos and such.

I wonder if future advancements could make it detect whether the food is good or not, and then project a red X on it or something.

My source even imagines this tech being taken out of the kitchen and into every room. For example, a bathroom counter that can identify pills, and a living room table that can detect…chip and dip combinations.

Well, I suppose some uses are better than others, but you have to admire where this technology could go.

SPFX Masks look way too much like the real thing

Posted: 05 Jul 2010 01:06 PM PDT

Take a look at this person here. If you notice a certain fake quality about him, then you are not alone.

There is a person here, but it is underneath a mask. That’s right, what you are seeing here with this Stone Cold Steve Austin lookalike here is nothing more than a mask.

I have a video of this after the jump so you can see the masked person for yourself. You will notice the realistic movements of the face that include twitching, moving the forehead, and other things that you wouldn’t think a person in a mask could do. Man, that guy’s real face (assuming it is a guy) must be dipped in glue.

It makes we wonder if we can actually have that Mission Impossible technology that allows for someone covering their face with a mask in order to impersonate someone else. I think we all know that effect was just switching with another actor, with some trick photography to make it look like the MIF team was putting on masks.

I’m not certain that this mask would fool me, but that is because I know it is a mask, and I’m looking to see what makes it fake. The real trick is whether or not this would fool me if someone came up to me on the street with these. Especially if they were trying to impersonate someone that I know very well, like they did in Mission Impossible.

Andev Sensor Plug

Not all houses have an abundance of well located light switches.  There are some that make turning on a light a royal pain.  Especially in cases where there isn’t any over head lighting.  Thankfully you can have this sensor that will make it easier to have some light, but it won’t stay on too long and suck up too much power.  Although I wouldn’t exactly suggest using this in a room where you sleep if you’re a big time toss and turn kind of person.

The light is able to detect when it’s dark and movement.  That means that it also won’t just kick on constantly throughout the day.  Once it does sense movement it’ll stay on for 2-6 minutes, unless it senses you moving within that time period and then the timer goes back to zero.  You can also use it for a fan, radio or even your TV.  With that being the case it could be a handy little burglar deterrent.  You can purchase it for $15.19 through CyberGuys.

Earphones feature retro volume knobs

Posted: 05 Jul 2010 10:20 AM PDT

Despite that in this day and age the world is all about the latest and greatest in technology, sometimes it’s fun to have some gadgets that pay tribute to the dead and gone ones of the past.  These ear buds do exactly that by featuring very retro volume knobs over top of the buds themselves.  The chunky knobs with the numbers right on them aren’t seen much these days, but at least you can have some in your ears.

Hilariously enough the Volume Knob Earphones don’t actually have any volume control directly on them.  Which is just fine considering the price, but it’s still funny.  Beyond the funky design, they’re just your average set of earbuds.  They have a couple different tips to choose from and will of course work with anything that has a 3.5mm headphone socket, which covers just about everything.  You can purchase a set for £9.95 or about $15 through Getting Personal.

Sniper Stand keeps it simple

Posted: 05 Jul 2010 09:28 AM PDT

There are a whole lot of smart phone stands out there that promise to be minimalistic, but this one seems to top them all.  Instead of having a stand that pops out when you need it, it just utilizes what you always have just sitting in your pocket or purse.  It’s a small bubble that stays on your iPhone or any other smart phone.  Then when you need a stand you just drag out your credit card or even your hotel key card.

You just pop it into one of the slits and it holds it upright.  It has a couple different ways to slide it into the Sniper Stand, so you can turn your phone more than one way.  These come with Peel & Stick Scotch 3M VHB Adhesive that’s removable, but still strong.  These appear to all come in glossy black right now, but perhaps they’ll get in other colors later.  You can purchase one for $9.95 through the Sniper Stand website.
