Lego Brick Earphones

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 03:00 PM PST

lego-earphones

If you’re worried more about the personality of your earphones as opposed to the quality, then these would be perfect.  At the price they’re set at, it’s highly unlikely that they’re top of the line.  However, you’ll still manage to get one more item that reminds you of your favorite toy as a kid.  You could match this up with the various other Lego themed items out there.

There were a set of earphones out there before that mimicked the Lego look, but they were styled a little different, plus they were only available in Japan.  These new headphones are available in the US and are far cheaper than the other set.  All around it’s a win win situation.  The earphones come in black, blue, green, pink and red.  You can purchase a set for $10 through Gadget4all.

HRS-I monitors your health, wirelessly

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 02:50 PM PST

winMNTR09870923-thumb-550x550-32235What you see here is the HRS-I, it is designed by a group of body monitoring products collectively called the WIN Human Recorder.

I suppose it is called the Human Recorder because it can monitor the human body which includes eletrocardiographic signals, body-surface temperature, and even overall body movements.

This device can communicate wirelessly to a remote base. I’m not certain what kind of wireless tech it uses, but it certainly is small enough to be worn underneath one’s clothes without anyone noticing. As for the battery life, it is good for three days on a single charge.

Now, this HRS-I can be yours for just $331, but the monitoring service is a $110 monthly fee. I suppose that the wearer of this device probably has to have some sort of debilitating medical condition to justify those fees.

I can see the WIN Human Recorder System as the future of medicine. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if I live to see a future where people wear these constantly. Then some sort of database keeps track of our health and updates us through e-mail or text message when it detects some sort of anomaly.

That may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but considering the mobile and digital age that we live in, is it that much of a stretch?

Perplexus puzzle game

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 02:25 PM PST

Take some time to watch this toy commercial for the Perplexus. Don’t worry, you won’t hear any screaming announcer, loud-mouthed kids, or the unnecessary flashy imagery that is a standard for any toy commercial. No, all you will see is the Perplexus toy in action.

As you can see, the Perplexus is a transparent ball with a labyrinth within. The object is to get a tiny metal ball from one side of the maze (which I believe starts with the number 1) to the other side (which ends with 100).

In short, it is like one of those wooden puzzles where the user rotates a small board and tries to avoid as many holes along the way. I don’t see many hole-type obstacles on the Perplexus, but I would imagine that the user has to maneuver this Perplexus in such a way so that the tiny metal ball goes down the right path.

I’m not certain who the audience is for this product, as it looks like a “toy” that could be used by both adults and children. The good news is that there are no complex machine parts inside of it, so batteries are not required. In short, the Perplexus is as addictive as a mobile 3-D video game, but low-tech.

Watch out for ATM Skimmers

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 02:04 PM PST

skim1-2I never heard of an ATM Skimmer before today, but now that I have, I am scared. It reminds me of the time when I heard about the identity thieves that supposedly dig in your garbage to get your personal information. I’ve been shredding my bills ever since.

The ATM Skimmer is most certainly a cool gadget, unless you are a victim of it. As you can see by the illustration, it is a slot that is designed to fit over an ordinary ATM card reader of your typical ATM.

This particualr one was found on a Citibank ATM in Woodland Hills, California. When a customer went to withdraw some cash, little did he or she know that his or her card was scanned by a thief. The Skimmer also had a tiny camera to record the user as he or she entered his or her PIN number. I would imagine that the thief probably planned to have retrieved the Skimmer, and started printing phony ATM cards. Then the scoundrel would have gone and made some seriously illegal withdrawals.

Of course, this thief would not be making “easy money”. This card reader is a pretty complex device, even though it could have been made from parts from an ordinary MP3 Player.

I suppose that the lesson to be learned is to watch out before you use the ATM. I wonder if I would have spotted the ATM Skimmer. You had better believe that I will be looking close next time.

Auto-Lift Iron saves clothing and people from burns

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 02:00 PM PST

auto_lift_iron

Ironing your clothing is one of those times when you absolutely do not want to get distracted.  If you do it likely means that you’re going to have to buy a new set of clothing after you manage to burn through your favorite shirt.  This Auto-Lift Clothing Iron is designed to help out the slightly flaky.  Sure it’ll cost a little more than a normal iron, but it’ll save you money since you won’t have as many clothes to replace.

It also makes the iron a lot more safe.  In order to make it lift you just let go and when you grab it it’ll lower onto the table.  Since it doesn’t stand on edge it’s a whole lot more stable, which is extremely beneficial if you have kids around.  I have the scars to prove that irons standing on end can cause some serious injuries.  These irons are currently available in Europe and there’s no word on when they’ll be reaching the US.  Currently they’re priced at $95.

POSTCN01 Notifies You Of The Arrival Of Your Snail Mail

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 12:50 PM PST

postcn01

It’s rare that anyone gets all that excited about snail mail finally arriving.  As adults you slowly come to accept that it’s either junk mail or bills.  However, when you’re dying to receive something special, then you might be impatiently waiting for your mail to arrive.  If your mailbox isn’t directly in front of your house, this will keep you from having to constantly check the mail.  Every single time the door of your mailbox opens you’ll receive an alert within your home.

The counter has an antenna that is placed on top of the mailbox.  Then it transmits to the small receiver with an LCD display that can stay within your home.  It doesn’t let you know how much mail you’ve received, but at least you’ll know exactly when the mail has arrived.  You can purchase the set for $55, which does seem like a bit much when eventually you won’t need it after you figure out what time the mail carrier usually swings by.  Usually it happens around the same time everyday.

Jabra Cruiser wireless speakerphone

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 05:30 AM PST

jabra-cruiser

Those who have used Bluetooth headsets right from the very beginning with their then technologically advanced cellphones would definitely have come across the brand name Jabra, as the company has rolled out a fair number of decent Bluetooth headsets in the past. Well, they don’t really have any standout device like Aliph’s Jawbone series, but then again they don’t need such a distinctive device considering the fact that most of the money comes from the average cellphone user who wants a decent performing Bluetooth headset that is priced correctly. Well, today we’ll look at the Jabra Cruiser Bluetooth wireless speakerphone, where it is the first of its kind that features Noise Blackout technology when used with cellphones.

Noise Blackout technology involves a dual microphone system which is capable of removing virtually all street and traffic sounds while optimizing voice quality simultaneously to make sure you get your message across in a crystal clear manner. Of course, this does not guarantee that the person on the receiving end will follow through with whatever instructions you provide since that is out of Jabra’s hand, but at least it does do away with the excuse of the line “being not clear” during a conversation. The Cruiser is able to bring superior audio quality in a sleek design alongside in-car convenience that makes it possible to keep both hands on the wheel while discussing about a multi-million dollar deal.

Another interesting aspect of its proprietary Noise Blackout technology would be the ability to identify the direction of various sounds, where among them include traffic and backseat chatter. This technology helps to reduce only surrounding noise without distorting a user’s voice. With Multiuse connectivity, you can hook up the Jabra Cruiser to a couple of Bluetooth-enabled devices, and they are not limited to just cellphones but can also encompass smartphones and MP3 players among others. The inclusion of a built-in FM transmitter makes it possible to store both calls as well as MP3 files on a mobile device, where you can play it back on the Jabra Cruiser via a vehicle’s stereo system later on. Interested? The Jabra Cruiser comes with a price tag of $99.99.

Vizio announces new accessory components

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 05:00 AM PST

vizio-remote

Vizio knows that most home theater enthusiasts would love to accessorize their setup, which is why they have a brand new line up of accessory components that aim to further enhance the performance and installation of their HDTV and HD audio components. First off the blocks would be a wireless HDMI adapter that comes with a 4-port switch that is capable of delivering HD quality video and audio from a variety of source devices including Blu-ray players and set-top boxes to virtually any HDTV sans the need for an HDMI cable. This would come in handy where keeping a neat living room is concerned, as the lack of visible wires also makes it easier to clean the back of your TV rack/mount whenever small colonies of dust bunnies start to congregate.

Apart from that, Vizio also has a new range of extremely slim wall mounts that cater for HDTVs which range from 19″ to 65″ in size, as long as they don’t tip the scales at more than 130 lbs. You get both swivel and tilt capability with these new wall mounts that provides for a more enjoyable viewing experience. To make sure that your senses receive the very best performance possible, Vizio is also offering a new range of premium HDMI cables alongside an environmentally friendly cleaning foam which is capable ofkeeping HDTV displays as well as other electronic components free of dust and scratches.

Last but not least would be Vizio’s two new universal remote controls, where one of them looks as though it is from the future, featuring a 3.5″ LCD touchscreen display with automatic backlight control. Known as the XRT100, it offers digital touchscreen control of VIA-enabled television sets, but also has the ability of functioning with any legacy A/V component which ought to make it all the more attractive for those who have yet to upgrade the rest of their home entertainment system. You won’t be able to enjoy multi-touch control on the 3.5″ LCD touchscreen though, but at least its one-touch controls are more than enough to handle the majority of your home theater system components without missing a beat, alongside the ability to display favorite apps grouped by user or genre.

Perfect Pasta Timer

Posted: 19 Jan 2010 04:30 AM PST

perfect-pasta-timerCooking pasta might seem easy, but it does take a fair bit of experience to get the texture just right, keeping everyone at the dinner table more than happy. If you haven’t yet earned your stripes at the kitchen, there is no shame in enlisting the help of additional gizmos to help you take that step closer to perfection. The Perfect Pasta Timer seems to be a decent candidate if you want to whip up a mean plate of carbonara.

This pasta timer accounts for the shape of the noodle and the amount being cooked, signaling when the pasta is cooked to your preferred taste. Its LCD control panel allows you to select from the ten most common pasta shapes, input the amount (1/5, 1/2, or 1 lb.), and choose al dente or regular. The device sets its timer based on these variables and beeps when the pasta is cooked to your preferred taste. The timer clips to the side of a pot and its 8 1/2″ probe monitors the temperature of the water and signals when the water reaches the optimal temperature for cooking pasta. The LCD is removable, allowing the probe to be washed in a dishwasher. Includes a replaceable battery.

$39.95 is all Hammacher is asking for, and the payback of compliments from your family members and guests who are well fed would be worth every single penny.
