Mag Surf makes Hoverboards real thanks to superconductive liquid nitrogen

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 08:15 AM PDT

What you are seeing in the photo and the video after the jump is a demonstration by the Universite Paris Diderot at a science fair. This is the Mag Surf, and it makes our Back to the Future II hoverboard dream a reality.

The trick is that the super-cold liquid nitrogen in this board makes it superconductive, which means that it repels the magnetic field on the track. With one little push, this hoverboarder, for lack of a better word is floating across the room.

It reminds me of high school physics experiments where the teacher made a magnet hover over liquid nitrogen. I have heard that maglev trains are in the works, and similar superconductive technology could be the key to making it work. Perhaps one day we could have the maglev vehicles that can literally drive up the wall like in Minority Report.

As you can probably tell, liquid nitrogen is probably not the best way to go if you want to practically use this type of technology. It is pretty unstable, and an accident could be worse than the final scene of Terminator 2.

I think the purpose of this video is to become viral, in order to create a buzz for this type of technology. To that I say: Please make this real. I want to hoverboarding in my lifetime.

Apen A3 Bluetooth for Smartphone

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 08:07 AM PDT

I have reviewed pens that can interact with computers before, and I had a chance to try out the A3 Smart Pen from Apen. I’m going to share with you the pros and cons.

I’ll start with the cons. Fist of all, the unit that clips onto the paper that you see here has a fragile clip. It broke off on the first try, and I only tried to clip it to a thin magazine.

The Apen A3 advertises that it can interact with one’s smart phone screen in realtime. I will have to say that I have used two of these pens, and I wasn’t able to get it to connect with the Bluetooth on my Droid X, even though the A3 says it is compatible with Android OS 2.1 or above. In Apen’s defense, I have had problems connecting with devices before.

However, I will have to admit as a device that can clip to a piece of paper, and then download the images onto a computer, this is probably the most accurate that I have tried so far. It can also store up to 100 pages wirelessly before you have to download them to a computer. Another handy feature is the Apen A3 can be used on a mouse with the computer. You can actually draw and see your results in realtime.

Also included in the Apen package is Photo Sketcher software which allows the user to draw on images, and then share them on Facebook or Flickr.

I will have to admit that I had some problems with the Apen A3, but if you can afford it, I will recommend it. It costs about $129.95 and is available here.

Condition One could change movies as we know it, provided you’re watching them on a tablet

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Now that the tablet market has taken off with the advent of the iPad, more and more people are watching movies on a touchscreen. A group known as Condition One has decided to take advantage of this trend with a new form of cinematography.

Simply put, this new technology allows the user to interact with the movie by shifting the camera angle with a flick of a finger. As you can see in the video after the jump, the user finally gets a chance of seeing what is happening past the edge of the screen.

Not only that, the user can physically move their screen and see from a movie camera’s point-of-view. You will have to see that to believe it. It is especially poignant to see a film about Libya.

It looks like the technology uses some hemispherical camera to get multiple angles. Considering the market for 3D movies is pretty big now, I suppose this is the next logical step, at least for tablet viewing.

I welcome this technology as it creates a more active movie-watching experience. Now you can see a story from different points of view. The company even wants to make it so a documentary about a movie can play while you are watching a movie. Think of it as a video director’s commentary.

I am liking where this is going, and I would love to see the first full-length interactive tablet movie.

Desktop Table Hockey

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Life at the office can get rather dreary after a while, so why not learn to spruce and spice things up with a little bit of sport? After all, being seated behind your desk all day long might just prove detrimental to your health in the long run, which is why playing a little bit of hockey could help break some sweat during your lunch break. Of course, since most office buildings are nowhere near the vicinity of an actual hockey stadium, hence the creation of the £19.95 Desktop Table Hockey that requires just two players to get a game going.

This is a stylish and compact mini air hockey game manufactured by Peers Hardy, where it will translate the arcade playing experience to a stuffy boardroom setting. At least you will be spared from all the corny music that is coming out from the rest of the arcade machines in the background, not to mention stale air and cigarette smoke that lingers around. Strong jets of air will blow upwards of this device, letting your puck float on a cushion of air as you attempt to smash it into your opponent’s goal mouth.

Just make sure you have 8 AA batteries handy at all times to keep it powered, and if this is going to see regular use, I would highly recommend rechargeables for the sake of your pockets and environment.

Rechargeable Cordless Heated Insoles

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Since those of us living in the northern hemisphere are about to feel winter’s cold fingers wrap around us pretty soon, it makes perfect sense to once again bring out all the winter wear in order to keep ourselves nice and warm despite the dipping mercury. For those who feel that the standard pair of wool socks are not enough, here is something which might go some way in helping warm you up from the inside – the $99.95 Rechargeable Cordless Heated Insoles.

The name itself gives the game away – but bear in mind that this will be very different from your typical heated insoles that sport cumbersome external battery packs. No sir, these heated insoles will instead be powered by undetectable, embedded rechargeable batteries. The insoles will come lined with wafer-thin lithium-ion cells and carbon fiber heating elements that are able to maintain a heat level from 88º F to 106º F so that your feet remain toasty warm for up to six hours.

Each purchase includes a key chain-sized wireless remote control that allows you to adjust the temperature of the insoles to three different levels, in addition to turning them on or off, of course. Capable of molding to your feet in just a matter of hours, the six-layer design delivers a shock-absorbing, ergonomic polyurethane base and a layer of heat-retaining synthetic fabric. Any takers?
