Cri-Cri, small solar-powered plane Posted: 14 Sep 2010 04:24 PM PDT We have reported on a lot of solar-powered planes before. Like the Solar Impulse, which is capable of a 26 hour flight, then there is the Zephyr, which broke the record for solar-powered unmanned flight. This is the Cri-Cri, and it is a solar-powered plane that is really only designed for a quick flight. How quick? Try about 15 minutes. Yeah, that isn’t long, and I would almost be afraid to take it in the air with that small amount of flight time. However, what do you expect for a plane that is completely solar-powered? It is only good enough to seat one, and I can’t see where the solar panels are kept. Of course, just because you have something that isn’t power-efficient now doesn’t mean that it won’t be power-efficient later. In other words, technology always works in baby steps. You might be Cri-Cri-ing at the fuel efficiency of this short flight plane now, but you’ll be glad to fly on a completely solar-powered jumbo jet one day. I wonder what they will call that, the Cheer-Cheer? Yes, I wouldn’t have named this plane the Cri-Cri, no matter how energy efficient that it isn’t. I have got to know why it has this name. Anyway, let’s hope the Cri-Cri will make the way for eco-safe flying throughout the whole world. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Boil Buoy makes noise when boiling Posted: 14 Sep 2010 04:00 PM PDT They claim a watched pot never boils and when I’m starving I swear that’s true. Thankfully there is this handy little kitchen gadget that’ll let you get busy doing other things. With this buoy you can prepare the rest of dinner and only mess with that water once it’s finally boiling and ready. Don’t worry, despite the picture making it look like this is some futuristic concept, this is up for pre- sale and affordable. I’ll fully admit I’m a kitchen gadget addict, but this chime would be very handy. It is made of stainless steel and has a foam core to help it float. The weighted bottom makes sure that it stays upright. Being made for boiling it is food as well as heat safe. Right now this is in the pre-order stage, if enough people order this will start into production. If you head on over to Quirky you can watch a video of it in action and commit to purchase one of these. Rubber band gun costs more than real gun, inflicts less harm Posted: 14 Sep 2010 03:55 PM PDT I don’t think I have had a rubber band fight for quite a while. I think that is because they usually end with someone getting hit in the eye, either accidentally or on purpose. If I was ever in another rubber band fight, I would definitely want to have the Rubber Band Gatling Gun on my side. This bad boy is made for about one hundred rubber bands, which will be shot as quickly as the user can crank it out. You can see it on a video after the jump, with “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” playing in the background. I would imagine that it probably takes a long time to load up, but it has barrels of different lengths, so you can adjust for more powerful rubber bands. I think I once saw one of these made of Lego, and it was pretty kickin’. This one is made of aluminum, and has a tripod so you can swivel mount and shoot this thing. It also has a CNC machined Black Delrin handle for comfortable grip. The weirdest thing is that this gun will cost you more than a real gun. It comes in blue as well as black and red for a price of $500. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Posted: 14 Sep 2010 03:30 PM PDT For those of you that actually owned a real Walkman, you’ll love this new MP3 player. Back when Walkmans were still cool, these mobile tape players were the best around. Hey, at least they didn’t skip every time you moved too much like the CD Walkman that came later. These MP3 players will even give you that fix of insanely bright colors if you’re a pink fan. If not, don’t worry there’s an alternative. Usually Urban Outfitters can do no wrong when it comes to me. However, I’m really not happy with the lack of information that they’re offering on these little MP3 players. They literally only give the price and some color selections. Well in the color area you can get these in pink, yellow or silver. The other unfortunate part with this MP3 player is that it’s featuring a serious price tag. Personally, I think £45.00 or about $70 is a bit much for a novelty MP3 player that they’re offering zero information on. Lanesafe reminds you what side of the road to drive on Posted: 14 Sep 2010 03:28 PM PDT I have to admit that I have never driven in a car in a foreign country where the rules of the road are reversed. If I did, I want want to get the Lanesafe. It is a device made to suction-cup to the windshield, and then project a green arrow or red X to remind the driver of what side of the road he or she should be driving on. I’m not sure how to calibrate this thing so that the transition to British driving or American driving is clean, but it works both day or night. It is LED solar powered plus 12 volt in car charger, so it will always be up and running. It is designed to “safely redirect your beam from oncoming traffic but do not block it. They not only stop dazzling oncoming traffic but safely redirect the beam to the correct side of the road whichever country you’re driving in. They will keep you safe and legal while traveling abroad”. Now, if there was some sort of audio cue to drivers that would buzz if you are driving on the wrong side of the road. Perhaps if this thing was hooked up to a GPS, it could do that. I guess if the price were a bit more than $33, it might have other features. USB Desktop Aquarium and Organizer Posted: 14 Sep 2010 02:40 PM PDT There have been USB powered aquariums before, but the ones I have seen used fake fish. Instead this handy little aquarium can hold real fish to keep you entertained throughout the day. Plus, to sweeten the deal a little it organizes your desktop accessories and offers a little bit of light. All around it’s a pretty serious multi-gadget. Alongside the aquarium is an LCD screen that features a calendar, time/date, week info, temperatures, alarm with snooze, countdown timer and some built-in nature sounds. In addition to all of that is a handy little overhead light. The inside of the tank has multicolor interior lights and gravel filtration. These are set to be released halfway through October. At that point Fascinations intends to sell these in bulk for $20 or individually for about $40. Source: ChipChick Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 13 Sep 2010 07:08 PM PDT In the late 1960’s, the UK’s Ministry of Technology was commissioned to make seven vans that could be a movie theater. Apparently, there was very little movie watching done on these things, as these vans sat around in disrepair for years. However, this one has been “painstakingly restored and outfitted with an all new theater system”. There is a full inventory of what equipment it actually has at my Source link. One of them is an Epson EH-TW3500 LCD projector. Now, if only all buses have a movie theater on them. Man, I would gladly have taken the bus to school if I knew there was a movie on it. Of course, my bus didn’t take two hours to get to school, so we couldn’t watch a full movie or anything. Knowing my luck, they would have probably shown those short educational films that looked old back when I was young. The sound wasn’t dependable on those reel-to-reel jobs. Still, perhaps there should be movies on every Greyhound bus for those real long trips. Of course, I can see a lot of people that would mind having a movie theater on their bus. Also, what if the movie theater bus had an accident? It would be weird to watch the end of Avatar only to find that the bus has rolled over. That’s a little too much realism. Posted: 13 Sep 2010 06:34 PM PDT Some of you might remember the Pet Rock. It was a fad in the seventies decade by advertising executive Gary Dahl. Apparently, he made a perfect pet that required no feeding or grooming, and included a custom cardboard box with a little bit of straw. He sold it for a $3.95 each, and it made Mr. Dahl a millionaire in December of 1975. This new version of it has solar panels, and can do more than the seventies predecessor. It starts to dance as long as there is light, and there is a video if you don’t believe me. I know that I barely believe me on this one. I was born in 1971, and I only have vague memories of the Pet Rock. Ah yes, the seventies, the decade that was required to transition from the sixties to the eighties. Yes, somewhere during that time, the freedom-loving hippies became the money-loving yuppies. Should we be surprised that this turbulent ten years gave us disco, Watergate, and a hard-shell pet that does nothing? It is available in many different colors, but I don’t have a price or availability date as yet. If you want, you can get a USB Pet Rock on ThinkGeek now for just $9.99. It doesn’t dance, though.
