Square Soda Can to reduce carbon footprint

I think we are all are trying to reduce our “carbon footprint”, even if we aren’t certain what that is.

Who cares? It has something to do with saving the planet, which is always a good thing, isn’t it?

I mean, that’s why you recycle your cans, right? Or at least you should be recycling your cans. Imagine if you were using square cans.

That’s right, someone has come up with a way of making a square can. This bottle has an opening at the bottom of the bottle that will allow multiple bottles to be stacked, which will reduce the amount of space needed to be stacked.

You may also notice that it collapses quite nicely, and it is 66 percent smaller. Of course, these guys look less like cans and more like bottles.

This actually reminds me of a little-seen film that Disney/Touchstone produced called Mission to Mars. It came out in 2000, and it didn’t exactly inspire us to get to the red planet by the end of the decade. However, that film took place in 2020, and it portrayed ordinary soda cans as rectangular solids.

Well, let’s hope we can have something to reduce our carbon footprint in the next few years like this. As for Mars, well, we are preparing with a special simulator.

Astronauts to spend 520 days in a Mars Mission Simulator

I think that we all want to go to Mars, but we’re not certain if our astronauts could take the journey there.

Leave it to NASA to come up with a way to test out whether or not the astronauts could take it. They intend to put astronauts in this big simulator for about 520 days.

Yes, I suppose that if you succumb to cabin fever, then you’re not getting the mission patch on your arm. There are three main segments for the surface of Mars, a place for the Mars lander, and then the interior of the spacecraft itself. This is to simulate the 250-day trip to Mars in the spacecraft, the 30-day period of exploring the planet, and then the 240-day trip back.

I’m guessing that whole gravity thing will still be involved in this simulation. The facilities have already hosted a 14-day mission and then a longer 105-day one.

Sticking a few astronauts in some thing for 520 days sounds like a pilot for a new reality TV show. Maybe in the next season of Survivor, which would probably the last season of it.

Something tells me that NASA will want to make a reality show out of whatever this ends up being. I’m not certain if I want to see astronauts in a confessional cam.

This is a Robotic Skateboard

Man, I saw this guy here and said: “does this guy look cool or what?”

Yeah, I had to cover this story. I mean, it is about a robotic skateboard for crying out loud! In all honesty, I don’t know whether I would call this a robot, and I think its got a little too few wheels to be a skateboard.

I’m guessing that those two wheels are designed to be perfectly balanced, just like a Segway. In fact, the user has to lean forward to make it go forward, just like a Segway (so I’m told).

I’m not certain what that thing sticking out on the front of it. I mean, it looks like some sort of thing that was sticking out of my carry-on baggage. In other words, it looks like this guy is standing on his luggage! Still, when I step on my luggage, it doesn’t go at 6 miles per hour. I think that a real skateboard could probably go faster, and I’m not certain how safe this is, really.

You should be able to get this robotic skateboard sometime in 2013, but for a price of about $1000. Yes, that is a very expensive price for a skateboard, but this is a robotic one, kind of.

Gravity iPod Speaker System

Those of you that are big into bright colors when it comes to your electronics now have another option for iPod speakers.  Since it is more affordable it’s not going to be one of those top of the line speakers with perfect sound.  However, at least it will have a slightly more expensive look, since it does offer an interesting design.

It can be moved around your home if you need something portable, thanks to the choice to use the DC 6V adapter or the 4 AA batteries.  Surprisingly enough both of the power sources are included with your purchase.  When this was originally released it became available in blue, pink, purple and red.  However, it appears that Amazon is only offering the red version.  You can pick up one of these for $26.85 through Amazon.

Despite that I’ve rarely played ping pong in my life, this very strongly reminds me of a bunch of crushed ping pong balls.  In truth they are definitely not made out of any materials that remotely resemble a ping pong ball.  These small lights would look great and offer a little mood lighting in the corner of any of your rooms.  You could even hang it as an odd looking chandelier if you so chose.

These lights were created for you to enjoy squishing the individual lights.  You can smash the soft silicone balls and enjoy the soft texture.  It offers sensations for your sight, touch and you can even listen to the sound of the air rushing out as you give one a good squeeze.  At least that’s what Diana Lin Design state in their description of their product.  It uses LED lights, so the lights won’t be hot to the touch.  You can purchase a set of twelve of them for $139.

Neverend Clock

This is one of those clocks that flat refuses to blend in with the woodwork.  Now whether you think it looks more like a cuckoo clock or a time bomb is of course a personal choice.  Frankly, I’m leaning more towards the time bomb theory.  However, the product description gives absolutely nothing away in that department.  You’d better move fast if you do like it though, because these are a limited edition series.

It was designed by Dan Funderburgh as a part of the Neverend Series.  The series is done by a very select group of artists and designers.  Kitsune Noir and Furni teamed up with the New York designer to create the clock.  It’s laser etched onto a 3/8" thick piece of russian birch plywood.  Unfortunately, since it is such a limited edition series, you’ll be paying a much larger price.  It’ll cost you $198 for one of these clocks.

BladeFish Seajet

The next time you go snorkelling, how about bringing the BladeFish Seajet with you? This comes in two models – the BF1000 and BF3000 which will retail for £299.99 and £399.99, respectively, and doesn’t require you to expand much energy since all you need to do is have enough strength to hold it in your two hands and let it propel you along underwater at 4.225 km/h for up to 40 minutes – it won’t help you outrun any Great White Sharks or predators, but at least you can relax your feet while you’re being dragged along. It does make me wonder what happens when you let go accidentally of the BladeFish Seajet, eh? Operational at depths of up to 30 metres, it tips the scales at a mere 4.7kg.

They say that good things come in twos, and the Dualbrella kills two birds with one stone. How so, you ask? Well, it merges a couple of umbrellas into a single device, spanning 6′ wide and 3′ deep. Despite its apparent large size, it isn’t unwieldy since it is made up of lightweight dual steel tubes, stretchers, and ribs that provide a rigid structure which is more than able to endure continued seasons of opening and closing. You need only one hand to hold it, letting your partner feel safe and dry under right beside you. Too bad the Dualbrella comes only in black, with an asking price of $39.95.

Cisco Valet makes home wireless networking dummy-proof

Setting up your home wireless network can be quite a challenge for some, as it does require some fair bit of technical knowledge to get one up and running. Cisco, a longtime name when it comes to networking technology, is back with something that is touted to be dummy-proof. We’re talking about the Cisco Velvet – a breakthrough new product line which makes home wireless simple and accessible for just about everybody. The whole idea of Valet would be to transform how families use the Internet in their homes, letting them enjoy the freedom of wireless access without having to be bogged down by traditional frustration and complexity that are often synonymous with setting up a home network for the less technically inclined.

Valet is touted to be the first wireless product line that is dummy-proof, making it a snap for virtually anyone to set up and manage their own home wireless network. All you need to do is insert the included Easy Setup Key straight into a USB port that is available on your computer (PC or Mac, it doesn’t matter), and let the Cisco Connect software load to finish up the rest of the job. Cisco claims that other wireless products require 20 to 30 complicated steps before you can set up a single computer, but their Cisco Connect software is capable of taking you to the promised land in but three steps – from start to finish. The Easy Setup Key will retain all setup information and can be inserted into other computers lying around your home to seamlessly add them to the home’s wireless network.

When set up is complete, the Valet will offer users a simple way to manage their family’s home wireless experience. You can add additional devices to the network, set parental controls, provide Internet access for guests on a separate guest network and customize personal security settings inclusive of passwords. Apart from that, all these controls can be set on-the-fly, letting you modify web usage for selected days and times of the week, and even for temporary periods if the need arises. You will be able to choose from two models – Valet and Valet Plus, as they are based on the size of the home and the mix of wired and wireless devices. Apart from that, the simple Valet Connector helps update older computers without built-in wireless capabilities to touch the Wireless-N promised land. Now here’s a little boy’s toy that ought to get dads all excited as well, since it has something to do with both demolition as well as reconstruction. We’re talking about the Radio Controlled excavator, which is basically an electric replica of an actual excavator rolled out in Italy by Despe. It isn’t light at all – no sir, not when it tips the scales at 28.5 kgs, making it the most formidable remote control reproduction on the market at point of publishing. Of course, for all the realism it offers, it costs a whopping $4,500 which is probably the most expensive remote control toy as well. Apart from that, you will need to purchase its 8-channel radio control separately – what a rip off! This will definitely rake in the chicks at your next beach outing, that’s for sure.

Something tells me that the 3D Crystal Puzzle Flash Apple might not be named correctly in terms of grammar, but you can be sure it is equally confusing to solve! Inside this puzzler, it comes with motion-activated LED that flashes which will light up the entire Crystal Apple. When completed, it would make for a rather gaudy piece of decoration at home or at the office, where curious onlookers as well as visitors won’t mind taking a pop at it when they drop by. I’m guessing this uses some sort of button cell battery since it isn’t listed down on the product page, but if you want to pick one up, it is going for $15.90.

Logitech Harmony 300 remote control

Logitech doesn’t just make speakers and mice, you know. The computer peripheral company also has interests in other devices such as webcams as well as remote controls, and they have come up with some pretty interesting devices from both camps in the past. Well, today is another of such moments when Logitech has rolled out their Harmony 300 remote control which is touted to be the most basic model from them just yet. After all, it is a snap to set up (at least according to Logitech), and can replace up to four other remotes in your house in order to provide you with a much better control over other devices connected to your TV with but a single button press.

Logitech’s Harmony 300 is proud to announce that it will never be out of date since it is powered by an online device library which will cater to more brands than you can compare to any other remote, which includes over 225,000 devices from more than 5,000 brands — now that is definitely more devices than you can shake a stick at. This list isn’t exhaustive though since it will be added to from time to time, making it an ever updated database. This means you can use the Harmony 300 for an aged VCR player or even a spanking new futuristic Blu-ray player, knowing that the Harmony 300 remote will be able to handle either with aplomb.

Setting up your remote control is a snap – you are able to reach your favorite entertainment in just a single button pess. The Watch TV button will turn on your TV and cable box in seconds without the need for any remotes, making it dummy proof even for grandpa. Apart from that, all buttons are specially placed to be within easy reach and sculpted to cater to your fingers naturally. For instance, all buttons to control your DVD player is grouped together, while another set of programmable buttons allows you to jump right to your favorite channels or use for custom control. Of course, this model doesn’t come with a LCD display compared to higher end ones, but that is easily justified by its $49.99 price point as it hits US and Europe from April onwards.
