LG DX2500 glasses-free 3D monitor

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

LG Electronics has just added another feather to its cap with a glasses-free 3D monitor – and not only that, their latest effort will also not go to waste, considering how it is also the first in the market that will be on the receiving end of the TÜV Rheinland certification for a glasses-free 3D monitor.

The 25″ DX2500 will see the incorporation of glasses-free parallax barrier 3D and head-tracking technologies, and Si-hwan Park, Vice President of the Monitor Division at LG's Home Entertainment Company, says, “LG is taking glasses-free 3D monitors mainstream with the DX2500. With the DX2500, we are making the LG brand synonymous with glasses-free 3D monitors. In 2012, we'll continue to expand our range of glasses-free 3D monitors featuring different designs and advanced functions."

Of course, not having to wear any 3D glasses would also mean that you as a viewer, will need to make some provisions on your part. In order to enjoy optimal viewing of 3D images, you will still need to stay within a certain angle and distance, but the traditional restrictions have been relaxed thanks to the inclusion of the parallax barrier 3D and head-tracking technologies that see action with the LG DX2500. This results in you enjoying a greater freedom of movement, allowing you to have a more comfortable user experience.

The use of position tracking in the DX2500 will function in the way where a camera that is embedded in the monitor, where it is capable of detecting changes in the user's eye as well as head position in real-time. Using this information collected, the monitor will then do a little bit of soul searching on its side, where it will calculate the angle and position of the viewer as well as adjust the image to display the optimal 3D effect. Once that is done, it will proceed with its advanced 2D to 3D conversion function, letting DX2500 owners view unlimited 3D content including movies, photos and games with but a single mouse click.

No word on pricing, but the LG DX 2500 will be available in South Korea now, although the rest of the world will have to wait until early next year.

Printstagram has your holiday photo-gifts covered this year

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 07:30 AM PST

I’m sure that most of you have heard of the popular photo-sharing application Instagram for the iPhone, and you might want to consider making those Instagrams into gifts with Printstagram.

You can see here in the photo a set of Miniprints, and you can get about 48 of them on card stock with a matte finish. Think of them as something similar to Polaroids, and they cost $12 for a set.

If that doesn’t suit you, you might want to get some Instagram photos in the form of 252 little stickers per order for about $10. For the same price, you can get 3 Tinybooks of 24 photos each. A Tinybook is a very tiny book to show off your pics.

Different from the Tinybook is the Minibook, with photos in a special little book on cardstock with a glossy photo-finish. Minibook photos appear as the same size on the iPhone, and two minibooks with 50 photos in each.

The last you can get from Printstagram is a Poster that is 20 x 40 inches in size that can accommodate 50-400 photos, arranged in a grid for about $25.

All of these are available on the Printstagram website for the prices listed above. If you have relatives that just want to see photos for gifts this year, the aforementioned site is the place for one-stop holiday shopping.

Tetra-Shed could change cubicles as we know it

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 07:15 AM PST

Some of you might remember the parody of James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” called “My Cubicle”, which is about a man who feels very insignificant in one of those cloth boxes that adorn many offices these days.

The Tetra-Shed is designed to give an office worker a definite space of their own with a wooden tent-like structure. It is designed by David Ajasa-Adekunle, and it reminds me of those blanket-tents that we used to make as kids.

I honestly can say that I could get a lot of work done here, and it comes with some deskspace, overhead storage, and some lighting. By the way, the entire thing can be closed up for privacy, which includes the doors as well as the windows.

While I like the idea of the Tetra Sheds, I can’t say that I am a fan of the shape. It looks like it comes to a point a little too soon, with barely enough room to stand. I will have to say that I am starting to vote for the rectangular shape of the cubicle box, but I don’t like the lack of cubicle privacy.

You should be seeing the Tetra-Shed sometime around next year. Now try and imagine a whole office floor full of these. Weird, isn’t it?

Fahrenheit 451 finally goes to e-book format

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Some of you might think that Bradbury’s prophecy is coming true with this headline. Allow me to explain for those that do not.

In Ray Bradbuy’s famous novel, it takes place in a world where printed books have been completely outlawed. If any are found, men who are called “firemen” come in and incinerate them (at that temperature). I believe that Bradbury used this fictional world to symbolize the rise of technology eliminating the desire for intelligence.

Ray Bradbury has always hated the Internet, calling it a “distraction, at best”. He has refused to have his books appear as ebooks, and has even stated in a New York Times interview that ereaders “smell like burned fuel”.

Bradbury is one of the great masters of science fiction, and there is rumor that some of his other works will make it to e-book format, such as The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man. I just checked on my Kindle Fire, and I found that Fahrenheit 451 is about $9.99.

Fortunately, we are at the point where books are still pretty pertinent, and we haven’t gone to an all e-book format. Personally, I don’t think we will ever arrive at a point where we will be burning books because a digital format has replaced print media. Sadly, any paper books that we cherish now will eventually turn into dust.

The Doctor’s Nano-Recorder

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

You know how it is like when you want to remember something – instead of writing it down on a notepad with a pen or pencil, you can do so with a voice recorder. It surely is far more beneficial since it can be proof in the court of law that the person actually said so, not to mention you get to relive the moment aurally since every single intonation and word is recorded for all posterity. Well, the $29.99 The Doctor’s Nano-Recorder might be something that you would want to look into if you are a huge Dr. Who fan.

It definitely is not a professional device, it can record and play back messages of up to 10 seconds in length – so surely this is not something that you would want to bring into a lecture theatre, but at least you know it can be the perfect accessory for a River Song costume. Seems to be more of a costume accessory in terms of aesthetics than to be a constant companion for those suffering from memory lapses.
