Eye Asteroids requires no hands

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 07:30 AM PST

Some of you might remember Asteroids, a game where you control a triangle that shoots at some oblong shapes that become smaller oblong shapes until they are utterly destroyed.

Yes, we have come a long way from the Vector graphics of eighties games of the past, and this new version of the classic game, also known as Eye Asteroids. Eye Asteroids requires no joystick, but all the controls are the player’s eyes.

You can watch the video after the jump of the eye-controlled game in action. You will note the graphics are more advanced, and the user plays a giant planet instead of that triangle that was supposed to be a spaceship.

All that is required is looking at what you will shoot, and in case you are wondering, it does work for gamers with glasses. The game is created by Tobii, which is only planning on making 50 of these machines at $15,000 each. In case you are wondering, that is pretty expensive for a stand-up arcade game.

I suppose that this could be a whole new beginning of eye-controlled devices. What I hope that I never see are real eye-controlled guns. In a video game like Asteroids, you have to hit everything just to survive to the next level. In real war, shooting accidents happen.

MyWirelessTV Wireless HDMI Kit from Actiontec

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 07:05 AM PST

I had to admit that I like the very concept of the Actiontec MyWirelessTV. It is a way of wirelessly linking something like a cable or satellite Box or DVR to any HDTV.

I got a chance to see it work for myself, and I was pretty amazed at the ease of it. All I did was connect the transmitter to my computer, the receiver to my TV, and suddenly, what was on my laptop screen was on my TV. And it worked instantly, from the moment that it was plugged in.

The MyWirelessTV has two modes. The first is the IR extender which allows the user to use one’s remote control virtually anywhere. The other is the USB extender, to connect a computer in one room to an HDTV in another.

It comes with a remote control, and the user has the option to add additional transmitters and receivers anytime. This allows the user to access Blu-ray players, game consoles, computers, and other HDMI devices with this device.

Devices like these make me wonder if we are truly looking at a wireless future where all video devices will simply be tucked away and wirelessly transmitting to all the monitors in the house. Surely this is happening already somewhere.

You should be able to get the Actiontec MyWirelessTV for about $229.99 from places like Best Buy.

Gear4′s PocketLoops Portable Music Creation Studio for the iPhone/iPod

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 07:00 AM PST

The first time I saw the PocketLoops from Gear4, I was at CTIA last Spring. I was pretty amazed that no one had ever thought about integrating an iPhone/iPod to a keyboard before.

PocketLoops might look pretty simple as only two octaves of piano keys are included, but it is actually pretty complex to use. The user can play the keys with 13 included synths to produce loops, and then combine them for a hit track. The beats created can be done with a drum kit that includes House, Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Reggae, Rock, and more.

The PocketLoops comes with an App that is ready to download the moment you plug in your iDevice. You need iOS 4.2, but the App allows the user to share tracks with friends via email.

In addition to remixing some tunes with drums, bass, and melodies, the user can access some cool effects like Echo, Chorus, and the XY filter Pad.

Okay, so if you have this thing that can make cool tunes, could the next big music artist already be making the latest hit song on them at this moment? Stuff like that is something that I find fun to think about. If you want to try your skills on this, head over to the Gear 4 site here and pay $79.99.

AOC Aire Pro Monitor sheds the fat

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 05:30 AM PST

It seems that Apple’s work with an aluminum unibody device has proved to be a masterstroke and an inspiration to many other companies, as you see HTC also employing a unibody design in their range of Android-powered smartphones. Well, aluminum is also liberally used in the AOC Aire Pro Monitor, coming in a sleek and brushed form factor, making it the perfect complement to modern homes and offices.

This is a 23″ metallic monitor that boasts one of the slimmest display panels in the world, measuring just 9.2mm thin while boasting an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel. IPS panels are said to be superior compared to other kinds of technology, where it will deliver consistent image appearance and colors across the entire display, never mind if you are viewing from an extreme viewing angle.

Apart from that, the Aire Pro will also deliver Dual HDMI connectivity, allowing you to connect the Aire Pro straight from the monitor to the Blu-Ray Player or gaming console so that you can watch your favorite movies as well as enjoy video games on the single device without having to switch cables. Not only that, the monitor itself will include bonus features such as an embedded Screen+ software which enables you to divide the 23″ viewing area into a quartet of self-contained work areas so that you can be more productive, although I am not quite sure how your eyes will cope with that relatively small viewing area after it has been divided.

Other hardware specifications that might just interest you would be the 16:9 aspect ratio, a WLED backlight, a brightness level of 250cd/m2, a response time of 5ms, a couple of built-in speakers, eight OSD (On Screen Display) languages to cater to as many people as possible, and an e-Saver Feature that results in low power consumption. If you are interested in picking up the AOC Aire Pro Monitor, it will retail for $199 a pop.

Star Wars Death Star Electronic Attack Shirt

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 05:00 AM PST

The Death Star is one of the most feared “weapons” in the hand of the Galactic Republic – I mean, something as large as a moon which could destroy an entire planet with a single blast of energy? I wonder what kind of fuel that puppy runs on, certainly nuclear is not the way to go considering the amount of juice it pumps out to obliterate a planet. Wear this symbol of fear on your chest with the $29.99 Star Wars Death Star Electronic Attack Shirt – where it will work out a blast sequence that includes the superlaser power-up and fire.

Glowing EL technology and an embedded white LED will be there for added final blast effects, and no pixie dust is used to get the sound out, as a wired speaker box does the job just as well, albeit it is hidden inside the shirt or it can be stored in your pocket. Powered by a quartet of AAA batteries, I am not sure how many blasts that would take before the batteries run out of power.

Beast Or Buddy Shooting Gallery

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 04:30 AM PST

Friend or foe? That is a question that some of us ask whenever you step into a new office or environment, and people start shaking hands with us during the introductory round. Here is a little “game” that you can play if you want to – the $49.95 Beast Or Buddy Shooting Gallery will challenge your reflexes (and perhaps show off your true colors at the same time) as you must quickly hit a trio of rotating targets using a harmless infrared gun.

All three two-sided targets will rotate randomly thanks to an infrared-sensing base, where it will reveal itself to be either an image of a wolf, bear, or mountain lion, while there is a fellow hunter on the reverse of each. The whole idea of this “game” is to collect as many points as possible in a minute, where you are supposed to shoot prey using the infrared gun, where it will make a “reloading” sound when you pump it.

A trio of modes are available to decrease a target’s exposure, so you need lightning quick reflexes and a fast mind. All accurate shots will be rewarded with a howl, growl, or hiss, and the LED counter will keep the score.
