The first is the Yogi, and it is a case for the iPad with those famous Gorillapod legs (seen on the left). Not only can the user take these two legs and twist them around to mount the iPad in many places, but it makes the iPad so it literally stands on two feet for viewing in portrait and landscape mode, perfect for those who like to watch iPad vids. The second iPad product is the Ori, and it doesn’t have the Gorillapod feet. It does allow the iPad to stand up by itself. Not only can it stand it up in portrait or landscape mode like an easel, but the case itself can fold up and around the iPad, giving the user an extra layer of metal protection for their favorite Apple tablet. I wasn’t able to get the release dates, but I do have the prices. The Joby Ori will sell for about $79.95 while the Yogi will go for about $49.95. The Kindle 3 was one of the hottest selling ebook readers of the holiday season. And for reading books, there’s really nothing better to curl up on a cold winter day next to the fire. But not many know that the Kindle has other useful features which may turn this eBook reader into a serious internet device. Under the "experimental" option in the main men, the Kindle offers three pet projects they have added to the ebook reader for real world testing – Web Browser, MP3 player, and Text to Speech. The web browser works just like your basic browser, only imagine that you’re trying to use it and your mouse is broken. Now you have to navigate with keys instead of pointing and clicking. This is the web browser experience. Not very great for every day use, but if you find yourself reading a passage of a book and you want to share it on Facebook or fire off an email to a friend, it’s certainly useable. Next is play mp3. This is a nice feature in that users can load the Kindle with some of their favorite MP3s, and then listen to them while reading. Excellent if you find yourself on a bus or train for a few hours and just want to pass the time. A useful feature for disabled readers or kids who just want a bed time story and mom or dad aren’t around to read. Users can start Text-to-Speech in the "text menu." Press the Text key to enable (Aa button, right of the space bar) and the SYM key together to turn on/off. The Kindle will then begin reading to you. In addition to these, users can also download PDF files free to their kindle by emailing them and tagging them with @ free.kindle.com in the email address. Finally, users can manage their social networks. Going into the settings feature under the menu button, users can log into both Twitter and Facebook and share thoughts. On deck was Rohan Marley, son of the Reggae music legend, and I got to see him and this Roots Rock bag that you see here. The Roots Rock is a speaker bag, for lack of a better word. I have never seen anything like it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I see a lot of imitators of it, assuming it is original. The Roots Rock Speakerbag is designed to put an iPhone/iPod inside for docking and charging. It will blast your music with 4-inch speakers with 1-inch tweeters for 36 watts of sound. The Roots Rock is also designed for portable and permanent playing. It is battery powered or AC powered, and comes with a 3.5 mm cable and Aux-in cables. I don’t have a release date, but the Roots Rock Speakerbag will sell for about $249.99, and the bag is interchangeable. The Slice is a portable pico-projector that is designed for Apple products such as the iPod, iPod Touch, new iPod Nano, iPhone and iPad. It comes with the docking trays for them all. It also has a Mini-HDMI and AV ports for other Personal Media Players (PMPs), as well as a VGA port for a PC, laptop, or netbook. For those that want their content on the big screen, it can do this. It is able to make a 60-inch image from about 10 feet away, with a viewable range of 125 inches. The resolution is WVGA at (854 x 480), a 16:9 aspect ratio, and it is very bright at 16 ANSI lumens. I have used projectors before, and have found that most of them are weak when it comes to sound. This doesn’t seem to be the case for the Cinemin Slice which has 6 watt stereo speakers. Other features include a headphone jack as well as an infrared remote control. The Cinemin Slice is available for pre-order and should ship sometime in the first quarter. Hey, CES doesn’t officially start until Wednesday, and these earplugs are worthy of being on display at CES unveiled. These ETY Plugs have won a design award at CES this year, and they are designed to block out the harmful decibels, but keeps music and speech intact. I had a chance to talk with Mark D. Karnes, the Managing Director of Etymotic Research Inc., and he said that the U.S. military has earplugs, but most do not use them. As a result, there are a lot of soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan with permanent hearing loss. Not only is it designed for men in uniform, but created for musicians so that they can hear their own instrument as well as their blend with others. I don’t seem to have a price for these from their site, but I’m guessing they are cheaper than the cost of losing your hearing. Asus teamed up with Amimon to create this service that allows the user to wirelessly connect a desktop PC to a television with 3D content. The end result is playing 3D PC video games and/or movies on any 3D capable HDTV.
As for controlling the unit itself, it is maintained via virtual USB link for controlling the PC from a distance rather than the television. By the way, did I mention that Asus is also working on a Wavi Xtion system with two Wavi boxes and a camera that looks like a Kinect for operating a PC with gestures. The first Honeycomb tablet is the Eee Pad Transformer that can be transformed into a notebook via an optional docking station with full QWERTY. It also has a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 touchscreen display, 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera, 5 megapixel rear camera, and mini-HDMI port for full 1080p playback. The Slider Android tablet has about the same specs as the Transformer, but it has a slide-out camera with QWERTY keyboard. Check after the jump for the last two mobile devices. As for the Windows-powered Eee Slate, it has a 12.1 inch screen with an Intel Core i5 processor. It also has two USB ports, mini-HDMI port, wireless-n connectivity, SD card reader, support for Flash, and a 2 Megapixel dual webcam. As for the Eee Pad MeMO, it is a 7-inch Honeycomb device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. Even though my Source calls it a phone, I have heard that the user interfaces with a stylus. The prices are just ranges right now, and I am guessing the higher price is the one with the most memory. The Transformer is between $399 to $699, the Slider is $499 to $799, the Eee Slate costs between $999 and $1,099, and the MeMO is $499 and $699. Sometimes when I am walking down the stairs I wonder, what would happen if I fainted right now? Of course I spend a goodly percentage of my life wondering about weird stuff like that. I won't tell you anymore about it. It's probably not a good thing. However, at least now I know what could happen if I had a medical emergency while I was driving my BMW. BMW's Emergency Stop Assistant will have the ability to sense your emergency, safely take control of your vehicle, bring it to a standstill on the shoulder and even call the ambulance for you. Utilizing cameras, radar, GPS and other modern marvels, your BMW will ascertain the conditions surrounding you, switch on the hazard lights, "look" for available exit options and maintain a lane of travel until it's clear to slowly make a beeline for the shoulder, even over several lanes if necessary. Normally, this total lack of control would unnerve me, but if I'm out cold, I guess its better than the alternative, for me and everyone else on the road. Then again, now every time I see a Bimmer I am going to wonder if anyone is actually driving the car. Will it never end?
