Angry Birds get their own (unofficial) tablet

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 06:30 AM PDT

You know that a particular idea has reached mainstream consciousness when it gets printed and sold in all sorts of places and manner – and Rovio’s Angry Birds certainly embodies such an idea. You have an unofficial Angry Bird park in China, and where else but China can you find an Angry Birds tablet which is obviously powered by Google’s Android operating system.

This is actually based on the latest Wopad V7 tablet that will run on a Cortex A8 processor with a 7″ touchscreen display, boasting the ability to handle 1080p video played from internal memory or from the Web thanks to the use of Adobe Flash. In fact, this tablet will ship with the Angry Birds “Match the Bird” game as well as Angry Birds Seasons pre-installed already, saving you time from downloading it on to the tablet. Other parts of the 4GB of internal memory will also be used to hold different Angry Birds applications and wallpapers.

Other hardware specifications include a front-facing camera, HDMI out, USB connectivity, and 512MB RAM. No idea on pricing though.

The iPhone 4S isn’t even out yet in your hands, but that doesn’t mean accessories are lining up and vying for your attention. Concord Keystone knows this, and intends to jostle with the rest of the competition for your attention with their Keystone Eco Slider keyboard that will hook up easily with your iPhone 4S (as well as its predecessor) via Bluetooth connectivity in order for those who have yet to get used to a virtual keyboard to churn out those text messages as well as long winded emails in a flurry.

There is no need to install more software to bloat things up, and just like the iPhone, it sports a minimalist look. This 50 key configuration will come in a 2-level sliding case.It won’t suck up juice from your iPhone since it has its own built-in rechargeable battery that can be juiced up via a mini-USB cable. Thrustmaster Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Love all things racing, and can’t get enough of burning digital rubber on your console and computer at home? Surely you would have a decent steering wheel setup in your living room, and if you are currently on the lookout for an upgrade, might we interest you in what Thrustmaster has to offer with their latest Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500? This new racing solution will come with a wheel replica of the Ferrari 150° Italia alongside a pedal set.

Not only does it work with the Sony PS3, it will also play nice with the PC as well, boasting the life-size replica steering wheel of the F1 Ferrari 150° Italia that is accompanied by a powerful base that holds the racing wheel’s motor and a pedal set so that you are able to use great hardware to close the gap on the computer’s lap records (or even set new ones if you’re skillful enough).

As F1 cars were designed with raw power in mind, so the same kind of thinking is applied to the Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500, where it has a built-in industrial-class engine (150 mNm torque, 3000 rpm, 65 W, Ø 52) which is said to deliver impressive force feedback effects. Of course, it cannot simulate the G Forces that bear down on F1 drivers as they tear up a track, but with a wide internal dual belt that offers smoothness and flexibility, you can be sure that the device’s built-in H.E.A.R.T HallEffect AccuRate Technology is able to deliver extreme precision along with a constant, long-lasting 16-bit resolution (65,536 values throughout the wheel’ s steering range).

You can set it up in two positions – a suspended position and a floor-mounted position that is ideally suited to F1 racing. Considering the pedal set is made out of pure metal, optimal stability and resistance are ensured. Since all 3 pedals are fully adjustable, it should be able to cater to even the roughest of drivers. Expect to see the Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500 arrive sometime this month for $699.99 a pop. Expensive, yes, but at least it is far cheaper than buying your own F1 team!

The eleMMent RV is luxury in a sexy odd shape

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 02:46 AM PDT

Just to let you know, the wheels of this eleMMent RV do not fold up, and it does not fly.

Yes, it looks like this craft is from the future, but this 40-foot vehicle is so now. It has 500 square feet of usable area, a master bedroom with a 40-inch flatscreen, and a couch and a table that can transform to a bar and lounge.

Still not sold on it? How’s 500 horsepower, plus a fireplace, along with a pop-up sky lounge and fog machine strike you? Did I mention that the paint glows in the dark? Yeah, this is probably the big band’s ride on tour, and roadies are not allowed on board.

Talk about luxury! I wouldn’t mind spending a few weeks on the road in my eleMMent. By the way, the reason why it has such a crazy shape is because it gives a fuel efficiency boost of about 20 percent.

Man, I swear that the flying RV that Lone Star and Barf drove around in SpaceBalls wasn’t as sweet a ride as this. I still feel like it should be flying, or maybe even on train tracks. I wonder what it would feel like to be behind the wheel of this and adjust to its oddly-shaped windshield.

Could someone please get me a working Portico, please?

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 02:23 AM PDT

When it comes to applications on tablets, developers really have to think outside the box in order to create the next addictive thing. Right now, Microsoft Research, Intel, and the University of Washington are working on the Portico, which allows the user to interact with the world outside of the tablet.

You can watch a video after the jump if you want to see a demonstration, and I highly suggest that you will. You will notice how two simple webcams can allow a stencil of a spaceship to blast asteroids on the screen. In addition to this game, Portico can also allow the player to roll a real soccer ball the size of a golf bar in order to try and get it past a virtual goalie.

What really got my attention is the virtual pet/Beanie Baby that can drink virtual water, eat virtual carrots, and even defecate in a virtual sandbox (seriously). It can even dream of its home with real life zebras. Just watch the video already!

Yes, I am seriously loving this Portico. I would imagine that the user would have to buy some apparatus in order to make it work on the iPad and other Android tablets. Unless they could be optimized for them, and if the Portico is what I think it is, these apps would be bigger than anything!

New software helps the visually impaired with their touchscreen

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 01:28 AM PDT

The past half-decade has seen a real touchscreen revolution, as far as mobile phones and tablet PCs are concerned. However, what good is this revolution to the visually impaired?

Fortunately, Adam Duran (a senior at New Mexico State University), Adrian Lew (a Standford mechanical engineering assistant professor), and Sohan Dharmaraja (a doctoral candidate) have created an astounding interface designed specifically for the visually impaired.

You can watch how it works after the jump, and you will see how the user’s fingers set up the keyboard, instead of a user having to find the right keys. You will note in the video how each letter is stated aloud, and how programs can be found audibly.

Until now, about the only way the visually impaired could interact with touchscreen devices like Android tablets were with expensive devices that cost about four and six thousand dollars. The type of software that I mentioned above cost much less. In fact, it could change the way the visually impaired perceive their touchscreen devices.

I like the idea of letting my fingers set up a keyboard. Too bad this type of software isn’t available on the Android market, at least not just yet. Perhaps we can get this out of the concept closet and into the Market for all mobile platforms.
