Verizon Wireless formally announces the Droid 2

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 04:25 PM PDT

I’ve been seeing a lot of leaks during the past few months about the Droid 2, and it was about time Verizon Wireless made a formal announcement about it.

I believe that this is one of the first Android phones that will come with version 2.2 (Froyo) pre-installed. It will also feature Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Swype, 8GB of memory, plus a microSD card with an additional 8GB more in it.

It also features a 5 Megapixel camera as well as raised keyboard, something that the original Droid did not have. Droid 2 also has a faster 1GHz TI OMAP processor and twice as much RAM than its predecessor.

The Droid 2 will be available for pre-sale on the Verizon website on August 11, and then will be in stores on August 12 for $199.99 with a two-year contract as well as a $100 mail-in rebate. If you want, you can pay an extra $20 monthly fee that will make your Droid 2 a mobile hot spot for five devices with Hotspot Service.

If you are willing to wait, you can get a special limited edition of the Droid 2 that is an homage to everyone’s favorite Droid with a 2 in its name, R2-D2. It will be out in September, and have exclusive Star Wars content and an R2-D2 look.

Trompe L’Oeil door covers

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 04:02 PM PDT

If you attended any art or architecture class, then you’re probably familiar with the term trompe l’oeil. This is French for “fool (or deceive) the eye”, and it is essentially an optical illusion by design in a structure.

You see it when go walk in a city and see a mural that looks like it is a part of the street itself, or any other time you see furniture, paintings, or structures that look like one thing at first glance, but are something else when studied up close.

This is the case for this door cover here, aptly christened with the name of Trompe l’oeil. As you can see, you can put one on any door frame to make it look like portal to something else.

These door covers come in many designs like Montmartre’s Stairs, French Catacombs Stairs, Castel Corridor, Messy Book Stack, Old Metropolitan Stairs, Empty Dressing Room, Escalators, as well as the Store Front that you see to the right.

Of course, you will have to pay $199 to get one of these on your door, and I don’t know how well they would really fool anybody. The trompe l’oeil effect works better on a two dimensional photo than in real life.

Since they made door covers, I wonder why they don’t make window covers.

And now, the most disturbing way to exercise, mobile phone required

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 03:34 PM PDT

Yes, this is a suggestive picture, and it is supposed to be that way, apparently.

This man is doing an Android App known as Issho ni Training. It translates to “Training Together”, but it looks like something that one would prefer to do alone. You can watch the video after the jump, which I’m sure many would rule as NSFW, to see why.

As you can see, the user is on a body pillow that looks like Hinako, the 16-year-old anime character from the app. To do push-ups, he puts the phone on the lips of the picture of Hinako and kisses the screen with every push-up. It sounds like Hinako is really enjoying it.

You can also watch the man do squats, and his reward for good exercise is to see some nice views of Hinako. That goes for doing sit-ups.

Okay. I think there is something to be said about this. I’m not saying that purchasing and using this app would make you a pervert, but it might give people an excuse to call you one. At least you’ll be physically fit. I’ll let you decide whether or not this is creepy, as I’ve already made my decision.

I believe that the App is a packaged deal with a DVD. It all sells for about $25. I don’t know if that includes the Hinako body pillow.

Dr Martens 50th Anniversary USB Boot Drive

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 12:15 PM PDT

Dr. Martens recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary and in honor of that made a limited edition flash drive for your personal enjoyment.  It’s the perfect thing if you’re a longtime Dr. Martens fan.  Especially if you’re one that has to put away your favorite shoes when it comes time to clean up and head to work.  You can carry this around and at least enjoy a little rebellion from the everyday office wear.

The entire boot is 2" tall with a cap that pops off of the top of the boot.  It only holds 2GB of your data, so you would have to keep it designated for those smaller jobs that tend to come up more often.  It is limited edition, so you’ll have to hurry up if you’d like to get your hands on one.  Luckily they aren’t priced too bad.  For one it’ll cost you $25, sorry, they don’t come in pairs.

DIY Fluorescent Floor Lamp

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 11:15 AM PDT

Finding attractive lighting can get expensive, especially if you go with anything remotely trendy.  It’s surprising how much money you can sink into lighting alone, but it’s an important factor for both everyday life and the look of your room.  Instead of sinking a whole lot of dough into a lamp, you could make some of these Fluorescent Floor Lamps thanks to a handy little tutorial.

If you like tackling new things, it doesn’t appear that this will take a whole lot of experience for any of the steps.  The electrical work seems to be basic enough for a beginner.  You just start out by buying 3 cheap fluorescent lights and those will be placed on a single base.  They don’t state how much they spent total on the project, but there isn’t a whole lot of cost outside of the 3 lights you’ll have to pick up.  You can read through the full tutorial here.

Ferrari Racepresso Machine

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 10:22 AM PDT

If you’re a big time race fan or just drool in envy over every Ferrari ever made, then you might want to check out this espresso machine.  It’ll make sure that you get juiced up with plenty of caffeine, so that you can tackle the day without getting all that drowsy.  Of course you just can’t call a Ferrari themed espresso machine an espresso machine, no, you must call it the Racepresso.

The machine was actually made to resemble the Formula 1 racer, Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari helmet.  When the front is closed it does just look like a racing helmet, but as soon as you pop open that front it starts looking a whole lot more like an espresso machine.  This was a design made by Ilgar Rustamov.  As of right now it is just a concept design and there’s no word if it’ll be making its way to retailers anytime soon.
