Steampunk USB Drive..this one is waterproof

Posted: 03 May 2010 04:00 PM PDT

I know what you’re thinking, it’s just another silly steampunk USB drive.  That is unless you’re like me, then you’re just excited to see a different steampunk USB drive.  Well if you do think it’s just another of a long series you’d be slightly incorrect, you see this one is different.  It’s waterproof!  Any drive that looks this good and allows for you to drop it in a pool of water on occasion is worth checking out.

In addition to the waterproof feature, it has a cute little window that lets you view a shiny light on the inside.  Of course the light only gets up and going when the drive is actually plugged in.  When it’s not plugged in, it just gives a view of a nice coil wire and a quartz crystal on the inside.  You can pick yourself up one of the 8GB drives for $125 through Etsy.

LED Dog Collar

Posted: 03 May 2010 04:00 PM PDT

This LED Dog Collar is slightly different from the rest – while others come with just a blinking light to help capture your attention at night (especially for folks who own totally black dogs like Labradors), this model sports a full LED collar. Yes, the whole collar will light up whenever it is worn, making your four legged friend a snap to spot from afar. You can also choose from slow flashing, fast flashing and having it being turned on constantly, depending on how far you want the collar’s battery life to go. It is flexible enough for virtually all dog sizes, where the steel D-ring makes it compatible with just about any leash. Nice to know it ships with batteries included as well as a couple of spares to get you started right out of the box at $4.95 each.

Vodafone rolls out Palm Pixi Plus in Spain this month

Posted: 03 May 2010 03:50 PM PDT

Folks living in Spain might have wondered why is it they have yet to receive the Palm Pixi Plus after all this while, and we bring good news that this easy-to-use smartphone will be making its way to the Basque country this coming May 10th before the name of the handset is officially changed to the HP Pixi Plus. Yes, Palm might not be in the best position financially at press time, but at least there is a certain sense of security attached when you make your choice to pick up the Pixi Plus after knowing that HP has rode up on its horse, ready to rescue Palm from the evil clutches of bankruptcy. Folks in Spain who are subscribers of Vodafone might want to consider this simple smartphone in a week’s time if they are ready to renew their contract for a new phone.

Just a recap – the Palm Pixi Plus is touted to be the thinnest phone from Palm to date, making it a snap to fit into just about any hand or pocket without compromising on performance. It will run on the idiot proof webOS platform that has proved pretty capable, but sadly it hasn’t caught on with the masses simply because Palm did not license out webOS for other hardware manufacturers to include in their devices. At home for both work and social communicators, the Pixi Plus will not break the bank despite bringing a touchscreen display as well as a full QWERTY keyboard to the masses, with the latter making it instantly accessible for messaging and web content. Apart from that, you can take full advantage of the Palm Pixi Touchstone Back Covers and the Palm Pixi Artist Series Back Covers to make it play nice with the cool Touchstone Charging Dock for wireless charging, albeit having to purchase said Back Covers separately.

The Palm webOS also comes with a special over-the-air model for software updates, helping make sure that all the latest features and performance updates are sent directly to your phone without you having to hook it up to a computer and download firmware updates yourself. Other features of webOS include linked contacts, layered calendars, notifications and GPS, providing a rich catalog of innovative and unique offerings for Palm webOS users. It is also encouraging to note that the Palm App Catalog isn’t dying but still growing, although that remains to be seen with recent news of Palm being acquired by HP. Any takers in Spain?

All new Wii systems come bundled with more than the usual

Posted: 03 May 2010 03:38 PM PDT

Nintendo knows that they have sold many more consoles than their rivals during this generation’s war, but that doesn’t mean they can rest on their laurels. In fact, Wii sales have been slowly tapering off, with the PS3 and Xbox 360 doing better than usual compared to the early, heady days of the Wii. Nintendo knows this, and while they are not going to engage themselves in a price war, the Japanese company has come up with a new package for folks living Stateside. Starting from May 9th onwards, Nintendo will throw in additional elements to the baseline Wii system package, where you will get Wii Sports Resort as well as the control-enhancing Wii MotionPlus in addition to the standard Wiimote, Nunchuk and Wii Sports staple. Not only that, you can also opt for the new black option (which has been out in Japan for far too long already), and the best part is this – there isn’t going to be any price hike as Nintendo maintains a $199.99 price point to entice new customers.

If you have given Wii Sports a go before but that has not persuaded you to pick up the DVD-sized console, then Wii Sports Resort might be just the thing to change your mind as it expands on the active-play fun of the original Wii Sports, boasting resort-themed activities including wakeboarding, archery and swordplay. Apart from that, Wii Sports Resort also boasts the rich control enhancements of Wii MotionPlus that lets you experience precision motion-control excitement right out of the box. I do wonder how will ordinary folks feel, especially those who have recently picked up a Wii and had to fork out extra for the Wii MotionPlus add-on as well as purchasing Wii Sports Resort separately. Guess such deals happen pretty commonly these days that consumers won’t think that they are being duped. One thing’s for sure though – folks who have read this piece will surely hold off any Wii purchases for the next 5 days.

To make sure that color co-ordination remains intact in your living room if you decide to stick to the black version, you can pick up extra black controllers and accessories separately if you ever plan to invite friends over for some swinging Wii sessions.

Phone for the elderly has SOS function

Posted: 03 May 2010 03:00 PM PDT

Alright so this does look highly similar to the joke remote controls that you give anyone turning 40 or 50, but this does have a lot of useful qualities.  When you’re half blind, you might want a cellphone that allows for you to read the numbers easily.  If an elderly person normally has to whip out the reading glasses to read the numbers, then this would save them the hassle. Plus there is also an added function for those emergency situations.

Should the elderly person fall and need help, instead of dialing 911 they can press the SOS button.  Ahead of time they can set the emergency number to call in case the SOS button is ever pushed. It can call or text up to 4 numbers.  Then after it’s pushed it will begin making a loud warning sound. Plus it also has a flashlight and an FM radio.  You can purchase one of these for $70 through Shopkami.

The Tornado Pressure Water Jet Gun

Posted: 03 May 2010 02:24 PM PDT

Alright so you’re cleaning the side of the house after you’ve managed to cover it in little grass clippings.  You shouldn’t have to take the hose out there and rinse off the side with some incredibly lame water nozzle.  Instead you need a nozzle that looks like a ray gun.  It’ll make sure all of that dirt is blasted off, even from 30 feet away from the dirt.  That also means you can blow birds nests off of those nooks and crannies that every house seems to have.

You can even add your detergent of choice to the mix and give yourself some extra cleaning power.  The gun has patented turbo charged water pressure that gives a powerful stream.  It has a lock-on trigger and quick-connect couplers.  It has 6 spray patterns and an easy storage design.  Once you’re done with it, it just telescopes to make it even smaller than its current size.  You can purchase one for $24.95 through Amazon.

Facadeprinter can make a large image on a wall, quickly

Posted: 03 May 2010 11:53 AM PDT

So what are we looking at here? Is this some sort of weapon of mass destruction for your next paintball game?

No, this is the “large scale communication tool” called the Facadeprinter. It is a “software controlled paintball turret that is capable of blasting a wall with dots of paint traveling at 200 km/h, from a distance of 12 meters away”. The machine is capable of firing 5 paintballs a second, and the colored pixels that it splats on the wall are about 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter.

The artist is able to make such images using SVG images uploaded from a USB flash drive. He also has a touchscreen interface so he can properly line up the gigantic prints. There is a video of this in action after the jump. I highly recommend that you check it out, because it really is something to see.

As you can see from the aforementioned video, it takes graffiti to another level. I’m not certain what else to use this for, but if you are a company with a recognizable logo, then this would be a very pointillist way to get your image across.

I would like to see if this artist can do more than just one color. Perhaps he can figure out a way to sync several of these machines together to create the Seurat masterpiece “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”.

Giant Baby at Shanghai Expo

Posted: 03 May 2010 11:26 AM PDT

I really wish I was Shanghaied right now, because there is a huge Expo going on. This is one of the exhibits there, a giant 21-foot baby.

Insert giant diaper-changing or breast feeding joke here. Seriously, this mammoth robot baby has been named Miguelin, and it is designed by a Spanish film director named Isabel Coixet, who is the human in the picture. She worked with an effects company known as Amalgamated Dynamics, which did the effects for such films like Alien vs. Predator.

Now, you are probably wondering why someone would build a giant baby. This is what my source says:

The gargantuan babe is part of a Spanish exhibition on Iberian cities based on the theme “From the City of Our Parents to the City of Our Children.” The theme of the $58 billion expo itself, which at 70 million expected visitors is to be the largest ever, is “Better city, better life.” It opens to the public Saturday for a six-month run.

The first two halls in the pavilion use numerous projectors to describe Spain’s ancient history and modern life. The third hall, home to Miguelin, represents the future: giant animatronic babies.

I will have to say that I admire the realism on this giant baby. Did I mention that it can move its head, eyes, and it can blink and breathe. Well, it can, and its face and feet look real enough to be used as an effect for the sequel to Honey, I Blew Up the Kid. Not that you should make a sequel to that. Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves was bad enough.

Brainwave Desktop microwave

Posted: 03 May 2010 10:57 AM PDT

This concept microwave oven is something that I could use in my kitchen, or better yet, my office desk.

I’m going to steal an old ad campaign slogan from Oldsmobile and say “this is not your father’s microwave”. Just to let you know, my father’s microwave oven had a dial you had to hand-crank to set the time. Just thought I would let you know how advanced we are in comparison to the early 80’s.

Yeah, this BrainWave microwave oven is far more advanced. It has a USB port, for one. Some of you might wonder what this is good for. Imagine a microwave that is hooked up to your computer that lets you know when your food is ready.

It also has an RFID scanner. The RFID scanner is made to work with pre-packaged food, so you can scan the built-in RFID chip out of the package, and the oven will automatically know how long and how hot to heat your food for you.

Of course, this BrainWave desktop microwave oven is just a concept. (All the good tech is, for some reason.) Something tells me that we might be looking at an age where we just take a microwave-ready meal out of the fridge, scan the chip, and dinner is almost ready.

Asus unveils new EeeKeyboard PC

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:30 AM PDT

Asus has rolled out (at long last, after numerous delays) its EeeKeyboard PC — this is a fully-functional PC that looks like your standard keyboard at first glanced, but you will be pleasantly surprised to know that there is a svelte and stylish keyboard concealed within. It has been a long time in coming, having been first unveiled at CES back in 2009, taking its own sweet time to hit the streets. Tipping the scales at a mere 1kg, the EeeKeyboard PC is capable of functioning with virtually any HDTV, monitor, or projector in order for it to function as a full-fledged PC. Users will be able to enjoy a wireless computing platform via the EeeKeyboard PC thanks to its Ultra-wideband (UWB) Wireless Display connectivity that lets you stream HD 720p videos up to a 5-meter range, while hitting a maximum 10-meter range where non-video transfers are concerned. Apart from that, you also get a built-in 5″ multi-touch panel that offers users with an interactive and intuitive means of directing the on-screen cursor to launch programs, send instant messages, and control its media player.

Folks who want to save space on their desktop will definitely find the EeeKeyboard PC a suitable purchase, where it can also double up as a family multimedia entertainment center – all you need to do is hook it up with a monitor in the study or office and let it run the course as a standard PC, while others can always hook it up to a projector in a conference room for presentations. Features include a durable and shock-proof solid state drive that makes sure that all your data stored within will remain safe during transit, coupled with integrated conveniences including the microphone and high quality stereo speakers, letting you enjoy EeeKeyboard PC’s full range of features without the need to fork out more dough for additional accessories.

Among the specifications of the EeeKeyboard PC include :-

  • Windows XP Home
  • 5″ 800×480 Multi-touch Panel
  • Intel Atom N270
  • 945GSE/ICH7-M chipset
  • 1GB on-board memory
  • 16GB/32GB SSD
  • Ultra-wideband Technology
  • 802.11b/g/n @2.4GHz connectivity
  • 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connection
  • Bluetooth V2.1
  • Internal battery (up to 4 hours)
  • Broadcom 70010/70012 multimedia decoder

Of course, the battery life stated here is pretty weak when you think about it, hence you might want to keep it connected to a power outlet at all times just in case you run out of juice during the most inopportune moments.

PURE announces trio of Internet radios

Posted: 03 May 2010 07:46 AM PDT

The standard FM radio is no longer worth checking out with the advent of digital Internet radio, but for those of us who live in areas that do not have a decent broadband connection, then FM radio might be all you have to rely on. Still, that is not exactly a bad thing since a good DJ is able to tip the balance in your favor, but don’t you think that Internet radio is a whole lot more convenient? After all, you will have the choice of searching through virtually thousands of stations to suit nearly every musical taste, not to mention taking full advantage of your Internet connection instead of using it for just emails. PURE, the name behind many notable digital and Internet-connected radios, is back with a trio of highly anticipated products which will be available across North America from July 1, 2010 onwards. Those who attended CES 2010 would have realized that these were on preview earlier this year then.

First off we have the EVOKE Flow which has picked up more than 30 awards, including ‘Radio Product of the Year,’ making this PURE’s first truly connected portable radio. It comes complete with light and portable with inputs for an iPod dock, or if you prefer, additional speakers. The EVOKE Flow would be able to find its place in just about any room in the house, ranging from the bedroom, to the kitchen and living room.

As for the Oasis Flow, this model comes with a stylish weatherproof case, rubber seals and a cast aluminium framework that can be merged together, resulting in the most rugged, internet-connected radio on the market. This could very well be the perfect radio for folks who want to stay connected while working or playing outdoors. The Oasis Flow comes with a built-in rechargeable ChargePAK battery for hours of non-stop listening pleasure.

Last but not least would be the Siesta Flow, where this connected-consumer’s alarm clock offers Internet radio capability at the bedside. Being small and sleek enough to fit in just about any bedroom space, don’t let its diminutive size fool you since it is powerful enough to function as a room’s primary stereo. With the Siesta Flow, you are able have a different alarm tone every single day, since it comes with 365 different alarm tones. Too bad during a leap year you will have to endure a repeat. Apart from that, there is also a quartet of independent alarms, while a selection of ambient sounds help you enter dreamland in a jiffy.

The EVOKE Flow, Oasis Flow and Siesta Flow will hit the market this July 1st for $229, $249, and $139, respectively. Are you going to pick any of the mentioned models up?
