Bio Robot Fridge keeps food cold in gelatin

Posted: 05 May 2011 02:26 PM PDT

Every year, Electrolux Design Lab has a a design contest where they challenge students to come up with new home appliances for a future era.

In keeping with this year’s theme, the Second Space Age, Yuriy Dmitriev submitted the Bio Robot Fridge. This Fridge really challenges the idea of a fridge as it doesn’t even look like a refrigerator, or any other household appliance for that matter. There is no motor, no door, only a layer of gel where you put things in and keep them fresh.

Don’t ask me how this keeps things cold, or how it keeps it in there. I have never seen this substance before, but I am told that the user can take stuff out without getting any excess residue on their edibles. I am told that this leaves a smaller carbon footprint than your average refrigerator.

As you can see in the photo, the Bio Robot Fridge can be mounted on a wall, but it can also be mounted on a ceiling. Yeah, the astronauts should love that. I guess that’s one way of keeping your food away from the kids.

This is still a concept for now, but it feels like the episode of The Office where Jim pranked Dwight by putting his supplies in Jello.

Triton Submarine planned to head to the bottom of the Mariana Trench

Posted: 05 May 2011 01:53 PM PDT

I love posting about these personal submarines. I guess it is the idea of freely roaming the ocean that appeals to my sense of adventure.

What you are seeing here is the Triton, and like most of those other personal submarines that we have reported, it is that same bright color of yellow like the Hydrodome BOB.

Unlike other personal submarines, this one is designed to go deep into the ocean. How deep? Try the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of all. It is about 35,994 feet below sea level, located in the Western Pacific Ocean.

According to my Source, there has only been two people to have made it to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. They were Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard way back in 1960, and I’m not certain what type of vehicle they used. After all, I heard that the pressures of the ocean are staggering at that level, at about 15,750 psi. I swear they must have used a solid metal bathysphere.

The Triton must be very hard, but it has a thick glass sphere that can open like a clamshell. I would imagine that you could take it to see the Titanic if you wanted. I hope that there will be news footage about this voyage to the bottom of the sea, as it has been over 50 years since the last time.

Puppy Robotic concept vacuum makes Roombas into cute pets

Posted: 05 May 2011 01:15 PM PDT

Considering that most of us have Roombas or other robot vacuums patrolling our floors in search of stray dirt, it almost seems like they are pets in some households. This particular concept device really takes the pet vacuum cleaner to a whole new level with Puppy Robotic. You can probably see how it works.

Puppy Robotic has a quartet of robotic pups that are dependent on one mother dog. The robo puppies are dispatched in teams in order to take on very small dust and debris, and they can enter into a lot of nooks and crannies that other robot vacuum cleaners cannot enter. Once the puppies are full, or if their batteries get too low, they go to the mother pup to empty their load and/or recharge.

Apparently, these puppies can do more than just suck. Feel free to ignore that bad joke and understand that the pups can be “played with”.

This is one of those devices that feels like it is out of that scene in The Fifth Element, where Zorg smashes a glass just to see the robot cleaners. “What a lovely ballet ensues”, he says. This is what these puppies would be.

Yes, it’s nice to see puppies that can clean up a mess for once. I don’t know why the docking station thing doesn’t look more like a real dog, like the individual pups look like puppies.

Matrox M9188 Octal graphics card ensures Japan’s first multi-monitor digital arrt board keeps on running

Posted: 05 May 2011 11:24 AM PDT

When it comes to the world of video cards, many of us tend to split it down the middle – it is either go with AMD and their ATi Radeon range, or NVIDIA’s GeForce offerings. I remember back in the day where there were other choices, including 3DFX’s Voodoo line, the S3 Virge range (which was rather bollocks IMHO) and for a select few, graphics cards from Matrox.

Well, Matrox is thrust into the limelight yet again with the announcement that Dentsu, one of the world's largest advertising agencies, has relied on the Matrox M9188 PCIe x16 multi-display octal graphics card in order to drive a six-monitor, portrait-oriented digital signage installation right smack in the middle of the Tokyo metropolis.

What makes the Matrox M9188 board so special to “deserve” being thrusted into such a role? For starters, this was the only solution that met their strict performance and multi-display criteria, and as a consequence – nay, a result of that choice, shoppers, residents, and passers-by today are able to benefit from a truly unique art and advertising platform – in rather high resolution to boot at 1080 x 1920 pixels per display.

Dentsu had planned to construct the first Digital Art Board (DAB) in Japan, where it will comprise of a revolutionary digital signage display that was specially designed to be part art exhibit, part advertising tool. Content Interface Corporation (CIC) was hired to manage the installation, where the interactive digital multimedia system developer decided to settle on the Matrox M9188 graphics card so that it will function as the display engine for the DAB, thanks to its multi-display flexibility and stability.

Capable of supporting up to half a dozen 60″ high resolution folding screen monitors in portrait mode, the M9188 will be able to display both images and video content across an astonishing 6480 x 1920 resolution desktop flawlessly. To further help the Matrox M9188 stand out from the rest of the crowd, it also comes with the Matrox PowerDesk software suite that allows one to access advanced desktop management features such as Bezel Management for a seamless display of images across multiple monitors.

Oh, here’s a word of advice though – skip Matrox if hardcore gaming is your thing.

mophie juice pack air targets 4th generation iPod touch

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:51 AM PDT

The iPhone, regardless of which generation it comes in, is famous for being a battery guzzler especially when you have all the bells and whistles turned on. mophie knows of this situation very well, and in the past, the company has come up with some rather nifty solutions to keep your favorite smartphone juiced even when you push it to the limits. Most of these solutions came in the form of a storage case that has a built-in battery, and today, we shall look at the mophie juice pack air which caters for the 4th generation iPod touch.

Granted, your iPod touch will probably last slightly longer than your iPhone (assuming the latter is connected to 3G all the time instead of EDGE or not having any data connection at all), especially when you use it as your primary portable entertainment device, be it listening to your favorite tunes or playing the latest games on it. This is where the mophie juice pack air comes in handy – it delivers both power and protection simultaneously without making your svelte and sexy device bogged down in a huge case.

No sir, this is a light-weight, ultra-thin rechargeable battery case instead that more or less doubles whatever battery life that available on a single charge cycle so that you can maximize your user experience.

According to Susan Schedel, vice president of sales and marketing for mophie "We have created a mophie juice pack air for the iPod touch 4th generation that combines exceptional protection and additional power with an enhanced design. Our goal is to help people do more with their iPod touch on the go for as long as possible, and our juice pack line has been incredibly successful in achieving virtually double the battery life for Apple users since the first iPhone and iPod touch devices were introduced."

You can choose from only one color – black, and that’s certainly not much choice, right? It will retail for $49.95 at the moment, but red and blue options will roll out later this month.

Children’s Water Ski Trainer

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:45 AM PDT

Have you read the Water Babies? For those of you who grew up during the last decade of the previous century, there is a chance that you might have come across that tome in your reading list, but the chances of that happening is pretty slim, I do admit. Guess you can more or less make a guesstimate of my age by me bringing up the Water Babies, but there is a reason to this method of madness – after all, I’m trying to talk about the Children’s Water Ski Trainer here.

Start them young, start them right – that ought to be the mantra that parents follow when it comes to instilling a value or habit in little ones. The Children’s Water Ski Trainer is actually an inflatable trainer which will teach your child the fundamentals of water skiing – all within an enjoyable, non-threatening manner. Instead of leaving a nasty first impression of one struggling with skis in the water, all your child needs to do is step into the trainer from the boat, take off from a stable seated position, and they’re good to go.

The trainer boasts of a wide platform, a padded handle, and foot bindings that will help your precious one quickly learn how raise him/herself to a standing position, as well as mastering the nuances of shifting his/her weight to perform turns. Of course, this $169.95 purchase will require an observer (an adult normally) in the boat while holding a 40′ tow rope for it to be immediately released after a spill.

Zippo Emergency Fire Starter Kit

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:35 AM PDT

There are just moments in life when you just want to get away from it all – the hustle and bustle of the city, the craziness and hectic lifestyle at the office, and all the pressure in your life due to a “modern” lifestyle. Well, what better way to do it than align yourself with nature, hanging out in the wilderness with a tent and all your favorite comics in tow?

Oh yeah, that would mean starting your own fires now, right? If you’re a true blue adventurer, then you won’t rely on sissy firestarters but really work to get that first spark out to burn some cinder and get a campfire going. Of course, you might want to enlist a little bit of help via the £19.99 Zippo Emergency Fire Starter Kit.

There is a reason why it is called so – it is meant to be used in emergencies only, so don’t take the easy way out all the time by using this to get that fire started and blazing so that you can be warm and toasty inside. No cheating now, you hear?

GTrek II GPS Data Recorder

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:23 AM PDT

Most parents would ask their teen who has just received the freedom badge – wait a minute here, I meant the driving license, this question when he/she breaks the agreed curfew hour, “Where've you been?” Well, thank the heavens that modern technology will help solve and answer many of your questions, especially with the GTrek II GPS Data Recorder coming in handy to track your (once) little one.

It might seem like an invasion of privacy, but paranoid android parents will think that it is £99.99 well spent. After all, just what exactly does the GTrek II GPS Data Recorder do? It is perfect for logging any kind of long journey, regardless of whether it is a countryside outing or a round-the-world trip.

The GTrek II GPS Data Recorder will keep track of where you have been, keeping teens on their toes – but not only that, it can also work equally well for adventurers who want to share their interesting trips with family and friends, leading the way to undiscovered local points of interest as well.

Of course, turning it off will stop the GTrek II from tracking you, and since there isn’t any display to worry about, all you need to do is pay attention to the LED – if it flashes in orange, that means it is working. As the GTrek II does not broadcast any signal, it is safe to use on aeroplanes even, but we are quite sure the attendants will not understand.

Vroominator adds some oomph to your ride

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:16 AM PDT

Are you envious of those who own muscle cars, and do wish that one day when you grow up (or earn enough), you will be able to splash some good money on yourself so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor while engaging the green-eyed monster among your peers? That’s easy to do if you have a good imagination – all you need is to get the Vroominator to be placed in your car and you’re good to go. The Vroominator is basically a device that fills your vehicle’s interior with throaty sounds of a sports car’s V8 engine.

It will need to be plugged into the vehicle’s DC adapter for it to work, where instant audio “muscle” is transmitted to a car’s radio on an unused FM frequency. Bear in mind that this $39.95 purchase will not play nice with hybrid or electric vehicles – they’d look rather out of place in the first place anyways, so why bother?
