Hands on with the Virtual Reality Copter Shadow from Interactive Toy Posted: 16 Apr 2010 03:48 PM PDT We’ve reported on Interactive Toy, like the Duck Hunter and Skeet Shooter toys. I recently had a chance to try out the Virtual Reality Control Shadow, a remote control helicopter. The copter is made mostly of styrofoam, with dual blades. It comes with a controller that looks like the “stick” of a real helicopter, and the user is able to control the copter by leaning it in certain directions. As for power, it gets it from a charger which is included with the toy, but requires 6 “C” batteries. (The controller takes a 9-volt battery.) The charger connects to the helicopter and it takes about 20 minutes for about ten or so minutes of flight. Okay, so here’s how it worked for me. It took me a while before I could get it to hover. I never was quite able to get it to go in whatever direction that I wanted it to. However, I only used it for less than ten minutes. Something tells me that this is one of those toys that will take a lot of practice before the user can master it. All in all, I found it pretty fun while the charge lasted. It’s going to be a while before I can figure out how to pick up things with the Shadow and lift them in the air. If you want to try it out, feel free to get it on the Interactive Toy site here. Posted: 16 Apr 2010 03:13 PM PDT The other day, I received a Bomb in the mail. Don’t worry, I’m quite all right. It was actually The Bomb from iFrogz. The Bomb is a set of speakers that can join together to form a ball shape. Granted, I’m not certain why they chose ball shape, but when they are separated, the speakers look like Yin and Yang symbols. The 50 mm speakers carry 2W each, with a nominal impedance of 4 Ohms. These two speakers are always connected by a curly cord that joins them. These speakers can connect to anything with a 3.5 mm input jack, but they still need power. Power can be accomplished with 3 AAA batteries, or just using a USB internet connection. Now, there is only one thing I don’t like about the Bomb: the name. Imagine if I tried to get this through airport security and they saw the word “bomb”. Maybe it’s called that because these speakers are “the bomb”. They are pretty good. Not only that, but they have that “Ear Pollution” label. I know that I said this about the CS40 headphones, but I just don’t understand the word “Ear Pollution”. I would hope that this would be good on my ears, not toxic waste. You should be able to get the Bomb at the iFrogz site for about $39.99. Fisher-Price Remot Controlled Ocean Wonders Mobile Posted: 16 Apr 2010 03:00 PM PDT Mobiles for a baby were one thing I didn’t realize needed updating, but this one would come in very handy. Instead of just having little dangly items that spin above their head, they’ve thrown in a few electronic extras. All of which are sure to keep your baby fascinated and hopefully sooth them into a deep sleep. All of that without you getting caught turning it on or off. You can stand just at the doorway and hit a button on the remote control. Then when your child needs a little extra soothing, you won’t get spotted and cause more of a problem. To keep infants calm it has soothing music and a light show. The base of it has a soft clear front that is filled with water, fish and glitter. When the child presses on it, it will send all of that swooshing around. As they get older it can be placed on a nightstand or dresser to keep the light show going. To purchase it, it will cost you $99.99 through Amazon. Source: GadgetGrid Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Danish hotel lets guests generate power for their meals Posted: 16 Apr 2010 02:36 PM PDT For those who want to earn some free meals at your hotel stay might want to look into this hotel in Denmark. Apparently, Crowne Plaza Hotel will reward a guest who goes on the exercise bike for about fifteen minutes. This is enough for the guest to pedal out 10 watt hours of electricity. I’m not certain how much that is good for, but if a guest is willing to sweat it out that long, he or she gets a $36 meal voucher. Again, I’m not certain how much that is good for. (For all I know, the meals at this hotel could cost $75.) You’ve got to admire this hotel’s unique way of giving their guests a break while power is generated. Now, if these bikes were put in the gym rather than outside the hotel, then you’ve got a marriage of physical fitness and green power! Speaking of green power, I’ve discovered that this same hotel also has solar panels up on the roof. All it needs now is someone pedaling all the time, and this place would be practically self-sustaining. Okay, if I ever do make it to Denmark to see the Lego factory, then I’m definitely staying at this place. I wonder if there are any other hotels that have this pedaling deal? Try finding that on expedia.com. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 16 Apr 2010 02:00 PM PDT I’ve never actually had to use an road flares and most people may use them anywhere from not at all to a couple of times throughout their entire life. However, anyone that needs them on a regular basis is forced to pay for new ones every single time their used. These LED flares would be a big investment to start off with, but would mean you didn’t have to worry about keeping a stash of disposable flares. These Duro Flash flares are much more durable than the other type. It can live through a serious downpour and any other type of weather you might come across. Should anyone manage to run them over, they’ll still keep on working. These will also work great when slipped under some cones to make them easier to be seen. The batteries will last for 4 hours before they need to be charged again. You can purchase a set of red and blue flares, with a carrying case and a charger for $179.95. Posted: 16 Apr 2010 01:09 PM PDT In some ways this faucet seems like it’s taking a step backwards when compared to faucets that flip on with a sensor. I’m a little odd when it comes to the sensor faucets though, I absolutely hate them. Usually because about half the time they like to ignore my presence. Instead of relying on a sensor, you could instead get an automatic faucet that gets turned on when your hands push a small lever out of the way. It’s not something that would work for public bathrooms, but it’d be alright for an in home bathroom. The down side is that you’d feel the need to sanitize it constantly since dirty hands are always pressed up against the piece of metal. At least it’ll make sure to cut down on water usage, plus it also has a continuous-flow function. You can purchase one for $39 through Gaiam. Samsung announces AMOLED Beam cellphone in South Korea Posted: 16 Apr 2010 05:30 AM PDT We all know that our friends over at South Korea do have a slew of smartphones which are by far and large, much more advanced that what the rest of the world gets (of course they are a close challenger to Japan which has some pretty far out handsets as well). For those who are in the know, the Samsung Haptic Beam (SPH-W7900) which has been out for some time already has just received its successor in the form of the AMOLED Beam (SPH-W9600), making it the first full touch beam projector phone in the world which is capable of delivering an enhanced viewing experience and richer image projection. Looks like cellphones these days are much more versatile than they used to be, and the Samsung AMOLED Beam (SPH-W9600) is no different as it allows you to project and share multi-media entertainment, games, video and pictures which are captured via its 5-megapixel camera. Those who are business oriented will be able to use the AMOLED Beam to swiftly and simply deliver professional presentations wherever and whenever required, although we are pretty sure that the room will need to be rather dark since portable projector technology, while workable, is still a far cry from what a dedicated projector is able to achieve. Better do your best to look out for its battery life as well! The AMOLED Beam is able to project any content to a maximum screen size of 50″, where it has a display which is 1.5 times brighter than its predecessor. Coming in both a lightweight and compact design, the AMOLED Beam will be able to deliver optimized features including Microsoft Office and DivX codec support for convenient use, a 3.3" WVGA display, a 5-megapixel camera and Terrestrial DMB for you to check out your favorite TV shows while you’re on the go if time permits. A-DATA announces brand new NH01 portable hard drive Posted: 16 Apr 2010 05:00 AM PDT
After all, in this day and age, transfer speed has become critical where external storage devices are concerned since content these days are a whole lot larger in size, thanks to the amount of multimedia data floating around. When working in tandem with a next-generation interface, users of the NH01 will be able to enjoy the benefits of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and increase their productivity by saving up to 70% on file transfer time when compared to USB 2.0 connectivity. Just how fast would the A-DATA NH01 be when it is running ahead at full steam? Well, all it takes to transfer a typical 24GB Blu-ray movie would be a mere 4.6 minutes, compared to 14.6 minutes required via a traditional USB 2.0 interface which is a pretty significant time saver by any standard. Apart from its superior transfer speed, USB 3.0 also offers improved connectivity between the device and its host computer to deliver enhanced energy efficiency compared to its predecessor. You will be able to choose from a variety of capacities that maxes out at 640GB, letting you carry or backup huge amounts of data on-the-go. Not only does it perform well, it will also come with a glossy front panel and coating located around the enclosure. Don’t worry if your computer does not have USB 3.0 support as it is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports as well.
