Have you watched Inception, and ever wondered at the end where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character’s totem, a spinning top wobbles but you were left wondering whether it fell down in the end to indicate that he is in the real world? Perhaps it didn’t – but that does not mean that he is back in reality and not in a dream, since he could have been using a different form of the Magnet Powered Spinning Top.

Yup, this top is capable of spinning – for up to a week, since that would be just about when the 9V battery dies out, but it would make for a fascinating piece on your work desk. I imagine interviewers placing this on their desk, asking questions to the prospective employees only to see those folks mesmerized by it – a surefire way of discerning whether said person has strong focus (or at least, focuses on the right thing) or not.

The Magnet Powered Spinning Top works as it does thanks to an electromagnet in the base for constant spinning action, and for $9.99 a pop, just leave it on for a week to see if the claim of its battery life is true. If the top doesn’t fall, you might actually be trapped in a dream, no?

The Inspiration Archipod

What happens when you live in a house with plenty of screaming children, running up and down the stairs repeatedly while disturbing you whenever you try to work, or just want to chill out in your abode after a particularly long, hard day at work? Surely your blood pressure will boil to a certain level, and you might just snap at them, never mind that children are being just that – children.

Perhaps it is time for you to look into the Inspiration Archipod, where this spherical pod will create an environment conducive for creative working, meditation, and innovation. A retreat right in your own backyard (if it is big enough, that is), now how about that? Designed by British inventor and Engineer Chris Sneesby, the Archipod’s interior will deliver a sense of space that you won’t believe when you step inside.

The frame is constructed from timber and clad with Western Red Cedar shingles, while the walls are double insulated, plastered, and painted, resulting in a seamless 12 1/2′ diameter x 8 1/4′ high interior space without any visible joints. Just to give it a semblance of a home, there is a stainless steel-framed porthole window that lets you see outside, although you can add in more if you want to.

The locking gull-wing door will be raised and lowered using an air piston, while a built-in electric panel heater provides warmth whenever the mercury drops outside, letting you contemplate on life’s challenges in comfort regardless of the season. Ceiling-mounted, dimmable lights provide mood lighting and two double-socket electrical outlets will let you use devices like computers or to charge up your iPad. The asking price? A whopping $40,000.

Sony’s VAIO laptops is a well established range over the years, and for good reason, too. They’ve proved to be stylish and technologically advanced, although some people might feel that when it comes to value for money, it isn’t quite there just yet. Well, this has not stopped the Japanese company from rolling out newer models, and one of their latest efforts would be the Sony VAIO S Series.

The VAIO S Series laptop will merge for the first time portability, performance and power in a thinner, lighter design that is perfect for everyone, never mind if you are a student or a business traveler. It intends to break down the previous perceived wall of being aloof by offering users more personalized options and flexibility in order to suit their lifestyle.

Some S Series models will boast elegant design in burnished brown, jet black or platinum silver with magnesium and aluminum materials, while toting a built-in lithium polymer battery which will work in tandem with the advanced large-capacity optional sheet battery, letting you remain mobile without the need for a power outlet for up to 16 hours – this applies to models without a hard drive inside, but rather, relying on a solid state drive configuration instead. Intelligent charging also lets you juice up the optional sheet battery separately, attaching it to the system without shutting down for maximum flexibility. Sounds neat, no?

This 13.3-inch S Series will measure a mere 0.95″ in thickness, tipping the scales with 3.8 pounds on a standard battery. It will be powered by the second generation Intel Core i7 processor, carry an AMD Radeon HD 6630 1GB Hybrid Graphics card on select models with 1GB VRAM, a dual channel solid state drive with RAID 0 technology option, one-touch VAIO, ASSIST and WEB buttons, an integrated webcam that works great even in low light conditions thanks to its Exmor sensor, an LED backlit keyboard so that you can work late into the night, and face tracking technology.

Prices start from $1,350 upwards depending on what you want to throw inside, while the optional sheet battery will cost you another $150.

Check out this UFO Tree House!

If you were jogging in the forest one day, and you looked up and saw this huge football shaped object hovering there, what would you think?

If you were thinking that you just saw a UFO, then you would be partially correct. This is a tree house in the shape of a UFO. I’m not certain whether or not this was designed for small children or adults, but it has a dinning area, bedroom, living room, and bathroom.

Seriously, it has a bathroom. I have no idea if the plumbing goes up the tree trunk or what, but unless it is some sort of outhouse, I want to live here. Then again, I don’t know how tall the ceilings are, but they look pretty low.

This reminds me of that home design that you see in movies all the time that is essentially a big flying saucer on a large stick. Sort of like a miniature version of Cloud City, without the clouds or floating. I think I saw some version of it in the first Charlie’s Angels movie.

It looks like the interior of this guy is just as good as the exterior, but I will have to say that during the day, the UFO Tree House is not as impressive.

This robot does windows, and runs on water

There’s nothing I like more than reporting on robots on this blog, and this one has is certainly has something unusual on two fronts.

First, it is can climb up walls, provided they are made of glass. It has suction cups, and they could take away all window washing jobs permanently. No more of those guys hanging off the sides of tall buildings.

Unfortunately, the suction cups won’t keep the robot affixed to the side of a glass building, not by themselves anyway. Here’s where it gets interesting. This robot has a vacuum suction that is generated by water. Yes, this robot can run on water. Not only that, the excess water is squirted out, which will help wash the windows.

Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Another thing that makes this robot nifty is that it is modeled after a gecko. Too bad it does require a flexible pipe in order to work, but the water tank is only so large, really.

Well, this water-powered robo gecko is under development from researchers at Zhejiang University in China, and there is no word if this will ever go past the experimental stage. So if you work on the top of a tall building, and you see a robotic gecko washing your window, do not be alarmed.

Drawing Machine takes prize at Maker Faire

Right now, I am in the San Francisco area, but I wish I could have been there for the Maker Faire, which was last week.

The Drawing Machine that you see here in the photo was one of the winners of an Editor’s Choice award, and he didn’t even expect to show it off at this year’s fair. The device is able to recreate a JPG mechanically in the form of a drawing.

It has a set-up with Arduino software, and it takes weeks or even months to complete the image. You have to admit that is a pretty long time to wait for a drawing, and yes, a human would be able to do it faster. I’m not certain if a human can achieve the level of detail that this device can, as it makes a drawing of Frankenstein’s monster from the classic motion picture look like a still from the movie.

Yeah, this is one of those times where you have to compare the work of a human with that of a machine. In this case, it is a fair comparison, because part of the programming code of this machine is to create a random element to each drawing. This means that every drawing will be different.
