Star Wars Millenium Falcon Bed

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 03:34 PM PST

millennium_falconWe’ve reported on many Star Wars products on this blog, and I guess we are obligated to report on this one. No, just kidding. I love reporting on Star Wars stuff, and this one is a Geek’s dream.

I mean, look at it, it is a bed shaped like the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. And there is a lady dressed as Princess Leia, for crying out loud. The only thing that would make this dream better is if she was wearing the metal bikini outfit from Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi.

As it is, the Princess is dressed in her modest Hoth outfit. My source says that this bed is created by Kayla Kromer, and I can only assume that this is her lying on it.

You have got to like the LEDs on the floor forming a circle. All that is required now is some sort of light show that would make the hyperspace effect complete. Speaking of lightshows, this bed has some headlights on it just in case you are going through asteroid caves, or something.

Anyway, it doesn’t look like it is for sale, and, if I may say so, it looks a little bit too homemade. But hey, I couldn’t do any better. I do like that pillow that looks like the radar dish.

Sugru turns you into a hack, and that’s a good thing

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 03:04 PM PST

I can’t help but think that this YouTube video is a very low-budget way of promoting Sugru, but I also can’t help but agree with the spokeswoman’s philosophy.

Granted, I question the way she defines the word “hacking”. For some reason, I normally use that word to define when someone does something cool on a computer. That, or destroying an object with a sharp tool, such as an axe. The way she uses the word “hacking” makes it synonymous with “inventing”.

Be that the case, then perhaps we do need to “hack” more. I agree with her assumption that we all want to “hack”, but we just lose interest after time. I suppose we just wait for Apple to give us an MP3 Player/camera instead of just seeing the need and filling it ourselves.

Anyway, Sugru is a product that has the consistency of Play-Dough when it arrives. The user can then use it as a sort of non-sticky glue in order to blend or “hack” things together. It takes 24 hours to harden up, and from there it will bond to aluminum, steel, ceramics, glass, and plastics.

All in all, it sounds like something that “should be seen on TV”. At this writing, it is sold out, but is only available at this site, apparently.

The Snoopy Mini Fridge

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 02:56 PM PST

S-EM8249961-300x300

Making the choice to buy a mini fridge is never as cheap as you had hoped.  However, you get a plain white version and you can usually cut the costs.  It’s not always about the cost though, sometimes you need a novelty mini fridge.  In which case the price doesn’t matter quite so much.  For those of you that are Snoopy fanatics, now you can own an itty bitty Snoopy themed fridge.

This fridge is very miniature due to the rounded shape.  Despite that it is so tiny, it is actually pretty cute.  It’d be enough to store a few drinks and a smaller sized lunch.  It only comes in light blue and it’s not actually out just yet.  There’s no word on when it will be released, but thankfully you can actually pre-order the fridge.  If you’d like to pick one up it’ll cost you $299.99 from Dream Kitty.

CoolerBot takes pictures of the outdoors, from indoors

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 02:34 PM PST

14dec9bouwbfThis next invention is designed for those who really like nature photography, but hate the outdoors. I suppose that you could just buy a bunch of coffee-table books, or you could use this DIY-er’s CoolerBot.

I’m not certain whether CoolerBot is its assigned name, but it uses a 48-quart Coleman cooler as a body with 14 inch wheels in front and then 10 inch wheels behind.

The CoolerBot uses two motors that are powered by 10 amp hour 12 volt SLA batteries. Just to let you know, the CoolerBot is very eco-friendly as it is recharged by two solar panels. Attach an infrared video camera along with a Nikon digital SLR, and you’ve got yourself a backyard National Geographic channel.

Granted, this CoolerBot is probably not going to see production, simply because no one would want to buy this thing that is made from a cooler. I mean, even Uncle Owen wouldn’t buy this from the Jawas. Unless it could carry cold drinks while it took secret photos of the Sandpeople. Maybe Luke Skywalker could have avoided being attacked.

However, I applaud the inventor Steve Norris for trying something new. It is probably better if he went outside to do his nature shots, but I think that there are some shots that the professional nature photographers could get that would be greatly aided by the CoolerBot.

Solar Insect Theatre attracts bugs to put them on display

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 01:28 PM PST

Solar-Powered-Garden-Insect-Theatre-289x400

Most people dislike having a light outside purely due to the insects that the light seems to attract.  Perhaps it’s time to embrace what the lighting attracts, instead of trying to find ways to get rid of those bugs.  This theatre puts the bugs on display that normally are attracted to the bright shining lights at night.  It not only puts nature on display, but it also is eco-friendly by making the light solar powered.

The light will automatically kick on once the sun goes down.  At that point it will begin to attract Moths, Lacewings, Butterflies and other insects.  You can also put in some branches and leaves within the theatre.  Don’t worry, once the buts fly in, they won’t be trapped in there.  There are plenty of ways for the insects to escape.  You can purchase the theatre for £29.45 or about $48 from Ecotopia.

Door Stopper High Pitched Alarm

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 12:25 PM PST

doorstop-alarm

Alarm systems have the tendency to become expensive if you go for the better systems out there.  However, if you aren’t worried about having a complicated system, this noise maker would do the trick just as well.  Plus with something such as this you could take it with you when you’re traveling and want to feel a little more comfortable while you sleep at night.

This door stopper could slip in front of the door, then when someone opens the door it activates the alarm.  It has adjustable sensitivity and can be turned off entirely.  Which means during the day it won’t be an issue when you don’t want the alarm on.  To keep it powered you’ll need one 9V battery.  In order to purchase the alarm it’ll cost you $14 from Gadget Brando.

NEC NP510WS and NP610S short throw projectors

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 07:44 AM PST

nec-np610s

NEC is back with a couple of new short throw projectors – the NP510WS and NP610S which will come under the stable of its NP Short Throw Series. Both projectors are portable units that aim to address the needs of educational facilities and corporate applications which require a short throw distance, be it in classrooms or conference rooms. As with many other gizmos these days, green is the keyword, and the wide-format NP510WS and standard-aspect NP610S will include a range of eco-friendly features which will prolong the projector’s lifespan, helping your organization save both money and energy simultaneously. Now how about that for killing two birds with one stone?

The NEC NP510WS and NP610S will come with ECO Mode technology that extends lamp life up to 5,000 hours, while achieving a lower power consumption and noise level (29dB) which is whisper quiet, making way for a pleasant presentation for speakers and audiences alike. The included power management controls will also contribute to energy savings as the unit will turn itself off automatically whenever an incoming signal is not detected from any of the inputs. On the other hand, the quick start function (3-4 seconds) and quick shutdown makes it a snap to use and power off the device without having to worry about a cooling period as well as the lamp’s lifespan.

Some of the new features introduced in the NP Short Throw Series include a longer filter usage time and a carbon savings meter, where the latter allows users to calculate positive effects of operating the projector in ECO Mode – something which is reinforced each time the system boots up via an optional message. Among the shared features found in both models are :-

  • Short throw lens, which eliminates shadows on the screen along with projected light in the presenter's eyes created by traditional front projection systems
  • Virtual Remote (DDC/CI), which controls the projector directly from a computer without the need for additional control cables
  • Remote diagnostics, which enables the user to monitor and make adjustments to the projector remotely
  • Closed captioning, which enables users to display text information for the hearing impaired
  • Automatic Vertical Keystone Correction, which allows the projector to be tilted up or down and still produce a square image without the need to make manual image adjustments
  • Auto Power ON, which eliminates the need for a remote control by automatically turning the projector on when a signal is detected
  • AutoSense, which enables quick setup for users that need fast functionality by intuitively syncing the projector with most computer signals
  • Dual computer inputs (VGA and DVI-I with HDCP), which ensure quick switching between presentations
  • Integrated RJ45 connection, which provides for quick connection to the LAN (10/100 base-T capability)
  • Top cover lamp change, which provides easy lamp changes without removal of projector from the mount
  • Powerful 7-watt speaker, which fills the volume requirements for most classrooms and conference rooms
  • Optional wall mount kit, which provides flexibility during integration and allows for wall mounting
  • Optional control and signal interface box, which manages power on/off, input switching and volume

Expect the NP510WS and NP610S projectors to ship sometime next month for $949 and $999, respectively.

Seagate Momentus Thin announced

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 07:32 AM PST

momentus-thin

Seagate, a name that is trusted when it comes to hard drives, has unveiled yet another model for the masses which breaks new ground in terms of its thickness – or rather, in this case, just how thin it is. The Momentus Thin hard drive from Seagate holds the distinction of being the thinnest 2.5″ hard drive in the world which targets ultra-portable and entry-level laptops, high-end netbooks, backup devices and a whole host of other consumer electronics. Measuring a mere wafer-thin 7mm in height, it is 25% slimmer compared to the traditional 9.5mm 2.5″ laptop hard drives which are currently in the market. It might not sound like much, but lopping off 2.5mm in the industry does lend to a rather pronounced effect when you are trying to come up with chassis for a device which is smaller and lighter.

With its size, the Momentus Thin drive is able to give original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and system integrators a significantly lower cost-per-gigabyte storage compared to solid state and 1.8″ drives, which in turn drives a new breed of entry-level thin laptops. Being thinner also means the Momentus Thin will be able to put on a decent performance and is more power-efficient when compared to its rivals. You will be able to find the Momentus Thin coming in a couple of capacities – 250GB and 160GB, where both will also be accompanied by an 8MB cache, a Serial ATA 3Gb/second interface and a 5400RPM spin speed. Expect the Seagate Momentus Thin to ship to Seagate's OEM and integrator partners sometime next month.

Among the other features found are self-encryption, FIPS 140-2 certification and free-fall sensors, making sure that your data within will remain safe and sound even if you happen to experience a moment of clumsiness, dropping your precious device to the floor by accident. No idea on pricing, but we should be able to see the first few Momentus Thin hard drive based devices roll out sometime after January next year.

Competition Time – Win a 42″ LG LCD TV

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 05:17 AM PST

lg-tv-lcd-42SL9000-3_4view-01_large

I’m delighted to announce we have a great prize to give away to somebody for Christmas. We’ve teamed up with the cool guys over at LG and are giving away a brand new and cool 42″ LED TV (42SL9000) to one of our UK readers (sorry to our none UK readers more international competitions will be coming soon).

Reviews of the 42SL9000:

The first is the new BORDERLESS SL9000 Edge LED TV. The Edge LED TV has it's backlight actually around the edges of the screen allowing it to measure just 2.9cm in thickness. The glass on the front of the screen also goes right to the edge sitting flush with the bezel making it a complete smooth panel to hang on the wall. The screen is full HD at 1080p and offers amazing picture quality. Gadget Venue

The 1080p LG SL9000's a slicker version of the SL80 unveiled back in July, rocking the same tiny frame margins. The difference? The LG SL9000 boasts edge LED tech to give it an even smoother finish. Not only is the new LG SL9000 borderless though, it's almost two dimensional, as it's less than 3cm thick – ideal for pasting on to the wall. Electric Pig

Glorious to look at, exceptionally well-specified and boasting plenty of features, the LG 42SL9000 makes an admirable attempt at stealing Samsung’s super-slim-TV crown. But a few shortcomings in the picture-quality department make it a likeable rather than irresistible TV, and, unusually for LG, it struggles to justify its cost. cnet

We are going to raffle the TV on Christmas Eve (12PM GMT) so one lucky gadget fan will have an extra special Christmas present, there are three different ways to enter the raffle (multiple entries allowed):

* Become a fan of Coolest Gadgets on Facebook (existing fans will be automatically entered :) )

* Follow us on Twitter and tweet: I’ve entered to win a 42″ LG LCD TV with @GadgetsCoolest http://bit.ly/4ASneD (Retweet to enter)

* Leave a comment on this post telling us what LG stands for.

By doing all three you will have 3 entries in the raffle. The closing date of the contest is Christmas Eve at 12pm GMT and just to reiterate it is only open to UK readers (grrr). Best of luck.

Color changing leather shoes

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 04:30 AM PST

color-changing-shoesShoes can be a very sensitive subject for women, but most men couldn’t care less what they slip on their feet to walk around unless it is a really major event in life like one’s own wedding. Well, if you’re the fickle minded and don’t mind purchasing the same pair of shoes in different colors, this latest invention by the Footwear & Recreation Technology Research Institute of Taiwan ought to be the perfect solution – it is capable of changing its color, all without having to go out and purchase your very own pair. This is made possible by spraying the leather with micro capsules containing luminous particles and resin, which will change to pink, orange or purple half a minute coming into contact with sunlight. You can opt for the entire shoe to be coated with this, or just part of it. The color changing option is good for up to 60 hours, which could very well mean the last color change at 60 hours could be the final one you have to settle for.
