OLED sphere shows a live view of the Earth

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT

What you are seeing here is an OLED “geo-cosmos” display at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo.

It is designed to show images of the Earth taken from a meteorological satellite, along with all the clouds and storm fronts. It is about six-meters around, and it has a resolution of about 10 million pixels across 103,620 PMOLED panels, each measuring 96 square millimeters.

The OLED globe will be unveiled on June 11th, and will hang on the ceiling. I honestly wish that I was going to be in Japan at this time, just so I could see this thing. It looks like something that an evil overlord would have hanging on his headquarters ceiling like a disco ball.

Most movie villains have a giant flatscreen with the view of the globe in front of them, which is highly inefficient. After all, we all know that those flat maps of the Earth blow up Greenland so it is about five times the size of Mexico rather than the size of Mexico.

I wonder if Google has something like this for when they want to do some cool close-ups of Google Earth. Either way, it would be pretty cool to have a live view of the Earth, in 3D.

NZXT Source 210 gaming chassis

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 09:29 AM PDT

Gamers who are more serious than usual about their gaming experience would definitely get the best that their money can buy, ranging from the processor to the video graphics card, all the way to the chassis, keyboard, mouse, and headphones. While there are many players in the peripherals market, when it comes to computer chassis, it is quite safe to say that choices can be limited to a certain extent.

NZXT is no stranger to building quality chassis for their devices, and their latest model to hit the market would be the NZXT Source 210 gaming chassis. The Source 210 is meant for folks who are just starting out in the serious world of gaming, and yet are budget conscious without having you to take a second mortgage on your home. In order to keep up with the times and to make sure you are not the laughing stock of the neighborhood, the NZXT Source 210 will feature a modern look and feel with a textured aluminum panel in both black and white colors – not to mention a range of features which will help maximize airflow with up to seven 120mm fans.

As for the bottom mounted PSU (power supply unit), it will enhance ventilation while the dual 120 mm front intake makes sure the front facing hard drive bays remain cool and efficient at all times. Apart from that, the Source 210 will also deliver 20mm of space for wiring purposes, letting builders achieve a clean look on both the inside and out. NZXT will also be rolling out a more advanced Source 210 Elite which will feature USB 3.0, tool-less design, and a 140mm top fan.

Johnny Hou, Founder and Chief Designer, has this to say, "At NZXT, we truly feel that gaming is the best form of entertainment money can buy. But it can get expensive when you add up the cost of the games, components, trips to LAN parties, and more. We feel your pain, and that's why we're now offering Source 210, a modest case that includes all of the essentials for performance for the cost of less than one game."

The Source 210 will retail for $39.99 (€39.99) while the Source 210 Elite is going for $49.99 (€49.99).

Forza 4 set to turn heads at E3

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 09:26 AM PDT

I’m headed to E3 next week, and I am pretty excited about what I am going to see. I am clearly not the only one, as you can see this video after the jump.

Apparently, a secret was given away as this one girl’s response was literally “buzzed out”. However, the video went on to show Forza 4′s new head tracking feature that works with Kinect.

The designers of Forza 4 studied how people drive so they could make the game more exciting. They noticed that people tended to look out the side of their windows during turns and other moves, and they wanted to bring that experience to the console. Thanks to the Kinect, the player can virtually turn their head during a race.

That is a lot better than older video games. I still remember having to push a button to see out of the side of my cockpit in the early nineties Star Wars X-wing game. You can see in the video how smoothly it works, and how it does bring an element of realism to the game as most racing games force the player to constantly stay ahead.

I’m wondering if this might work better with triple displays. After all, when the player turns his or her head, he or she is no longer looking at the screen in front of them. It is quite possible that this effect could be lost on someone playing it on a single screen.

Well, it will be on display at E3, so I look forward to trying it out for myself.

inPerson HD webcam from CreativeLive!

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:56 AM PDT

The last time that I saw inPerson from Creative, it looked more like a laptop than a webcam, but it was a bold step toward telepresence technology.

Creative has recently announced that their Creative Live! Cam in Person HD meets “the exacting requirements for HD video calling in Skype”. The inPerson HD has H.264 video encoding processor so the user doesn’t need to have a high-performance CPU to receive a high-quality Skype HD video quality experience.

The iPerson HD also has a new “quad mic array” with the microphones precisely spaced along the nine-inch flat-panel surface of the camera. The inPerson HD also has some noise-canceling technology that removes ambient noise more effectively than other webcams.

This adds up to no choppy video, which is usually caused by when the PC can’t handle the encoding fast enough. Considering how webcams used to give us images that looked like the frame-rate of Max Headroom, I fully welcome this change.

Also included in the inPerson HD package is a bundled Live! Central 3 software suite with “advanced video and audio effects, avatar creation, movie creation, desktop sharing features and surveillance capabilities”. Of course, all this high quality features do cost a lot, and the inPerson HD costs about $149.99.

Calibur11 Base Vault targets PS3 owners now

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 07:54 AM PDT

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3 for short) can be said to be a success in its own right, and for the longest time, it was touted to be the cheapest Blu-ray disc player in town, and with the option to upgrade its firmware (unlike early models of other Blu-ray players), the PS3 made perfect sense from a home entertainment point of view. Gaming-wise, all the signature titles were there from the beginning, alongside some great third party titles as well.

As for the console itself, it has undergone a hardware revision along the way, looking much slimmer than what it originally was. Still, there is always room for improvement, otherwise we would all still be living in caves, won’t we? Calibur11 knows this, which is why they have rolled out the Base Vault for the Ps3 this time around instead of just for the Xbox 360 previously.

Its hugely popular Vault system of 3D Gaming Armor and accessories line will cater for PS3 owners this summer, where you are able to customize them according to color, accessory and nameplate. Needless to say, these do not only look good on the outside, but the whole idea of them being there would be to deliver additional protection to the PS3. While the PS3 isn’t something portable that needs higher grade protection, at least you won’t have unwanted knocks or scratches appear on its chassis with the 3D Gaming Armor.

Among the accessories that you can choose from would be controller and headphone holders. For a more personalized experience, there is always the presence of personalized nameplates, where you can opt from 10 background templates that can each be imprinted with a tagline in the font and color of their choice. The Calibur11 Base Vaults for PS3 will retail from $59.99 onwards and customized nameplates will cost $17.99.

Hand Pedal Float

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 05:30 AM PDT

You know the old proverb, you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. The same applies to this leisurely looking float that might just lull you into thinking that floating around on a pool with a good book in hand, a pair of shades, some Pina Colada and a generous amount of sunscreen splashed all over is the perfect idea of chilling out. Why not throw in an element of exercise with the Hand Pedal Float?

This raft lounger can be propelled in the direction of your choice using hand-powered propellers, where a couple of four-blade propellers (with one located on each side of the seat) will rotate with a simple turn, helping move the float forward, backward, or turning it in the direction that you want to. With an angled backrest, it will let you relax in a reclined manner, while 25′ sq. of float real estate ought to let you have more than enough space for outstretched limbs.

There are also two integrated cup holders that will keep your favorite drink upright. Made from heavy-gauge vinyl, it is puncture resistant (to a reasonable degree, of course), and isn’t that easy to fade. Are you willing to fork out $79.95 for the Hand Pedal Float?

Magneticat Cat Toy

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Pets might not be on the same level as humans, but that does not mean they do not learn through some human methods, and playing is among one of those traits. After all, it is through playing that kittens learn how to catch prey, honing their reflexes and hunting instinct amongst their siblings. Cat owners out there – how many times have your feline friend left you a “present” in front of the door in the form of a roach, rat or other small animals?

How about letting Garfield (or whatever else you call your cat) hone its playing skills with the Magneticat Cat Toy? This $12.99 purchase works as its name suggests, featuring a magnetically powered cat toy inside that boasts of a weighted base and a ladybug toy on a string. The magnet in the base will repel the ladybug, letting it dance, and that ought to keep your cat amused for hours on end.

It would be interesting to see how Magneto harnesses this toy as a killing machine compared to a coin…
