Astro A30 Metal Gear Solid Headset

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 03:00 PM PDT

There are very few headsets out there that won’t make you look like a total dork.  Sure, you might be seriously creaming the competition in a game, but you’re still going to look like a bit of a dweeb with that headset firmly on your head.  Thankfully, there are the occasional headsets created that actually look pretty cool.  This Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is one that might just help you look a little tougher while you’re wearing it.

As far as the sound goes, it’s probably pretty decent.  However, headsets and headphones are just one of those things no matter what the statistics state, it’s just better to test them out for yourself.  Hopefully you can get a buddy to buy them first and then you can find out the verdict on them.  These were just recently released in the US and can be picked up for $149.  Of course they’ll also give you $20 voucher to purchase the game, which is nice.

PhoneBook uses your iPhone

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 02:30 PM PDT

If you have kids, then you’ve probably already discovered how much you can keep young children entertained with your phone.  Those of you with an iPhone or an iPod Touch can keep them entranced for even longer.  Well one company in Japan is taking that fascination one step further by creating a PhoneBook that works with your iPhone or iPod Touch to make your child’s book experience a little more thrilling.

Truthfully sometimes I think we get on a little bit of a gadget overkill when it comes to little ones, but I like that this doesn’t require you to purchase yet another expensive gadget.  Besides, it’s better than buying a gadget for them that they’ll only be interested in for a few months.  After you pay for this mildly overpriced book if they get bored, you won’t be out quite as much as you would with other hi-tech toys.  These Japanese books will be released on May 25th.  At that point the book by Mobile Art Lab will cost about $32 through Amazon.  If you want to check it out a little more thoroughly there is a video of it in action on the Amazon product page.

Trashlight isn’t trashy

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 01:50 PM PDT

This is the most classy trash themed light that you could ever possibly own.  Sure, trash is a dirty thing, but you can pretty it up with this little gadget.  With this you’ll never again have to dump out your trash in the dark since the lamp is directly attached to the can itself.  Sure, it could make putting trash bags into the can a little tricky, but at least you’ll be able to see what you’re doing.

Another added bonus is that you won’t have to go far to throw out your burned out light bulb when the lamp stops shining brightly.  The trash is actually a concept design made for a show based around "Uncomfortable Conversations".  The idea is that not even your trash can be a secret with this can.  It’ll be on display for every single person that enters your home.  After all, your garbage can tells a whole lot about you.  There’s no word on if this design by Craighton Berman will ever make it to a purchasable stage.

Leap Frog Leapster Explorer

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 08:30 AM PDT

I’ve reported on Leap Frog products before, such as the Didj and the Leapster II.

They are terrific at making portable and electric gaming/educational toys for kids in the grade school years, and they just announced the Leapster Explorer Learning Experience yesterday.

If you didn’t hear about it, I don’t blame you. After all, Apple had this new iPhone thing that they were all excited about. That effectively killed most technological coverage yesterday.

Anyway, the Leapster Explorer Learning Experience is designed for kids ages four to nine, and it has a high resolution touchscreen as well as “a click-in camera accessory”. I’m not certain if that means it can take pictures, but it can support downloadable Leaplet learning Apps such as e-Books and videos.

It is a definite quantum leap with their gameplay as they can deliver Flash and 3D graphics. It also features more personalized play like having its young users create on-board pets, then playing games with this virtual pet.

The Leap Frog Leapster Explorer Learning Experience is available for pre-order on the Leap Frog site. It will be officially released on July 15. By the end of the year, it is planned to have 40 different play experiences available, including 12 cartridge games and 18 Leaplet Learning Apps.

Nanodots magnetic sets released today

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 08:00 AM PDT

This next item is set to be launched today, and I’m not certain how to classify it. I suppose that one could simply look at it and call it a building toy, but I would compare it with Lego or K’nex.

The Nanodots are essentially tiny magnetized balls that will lock together when put in certain arrangements. You can watch a video here of the Nanodots channel if you want to see it in action for yourself.

I found them to be simply amazing, and I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on it for some nice building block fun. Yes, Nanodots are proof that even grown-ups need to have some building block fun too. So all of you adults who play with Lego, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

In fact, I wouldn’t give the Nanodots to a kid, unless they were a certain age. This is one thing that you would not want your kid to swallow. I think I saw an episode of Grey’s Anatomy where something like this happened. The last thing you want to see is some weird case on Grey’s Anatomy come to life, believe me.

You should be able to get the Nanodots in original metallic, black, silver, or 20K gold. You can order the sets here for a price that range from $29.99-$39.99.

Orange Power Wellies

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 02:32 AM PDT

The 2010 Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is scheduled to take place in June 23-28, and these boots are made for walking during it, apparently.

According to a Press Release, these are the Orange Power Wellies, and they were created in collaboration with renewable energy experts GotWind for “a unique power generating sole” that converts heat from the feet into electricity.

Say what now? You mean that all that sweaty feet can be used to power something like a mobile device? Apparently so. In fact, about 12 hours of stomping around can give enough of a charge a mobile phone for about an hour. You want more power, then you had better get your feet moving. Seriously, the hotter your feet get, the more power you can make.

This apparently uses the “Seebeck” effect with thermoelectric modules constructed of P-type and n-type semiconductor materials to make a thermocouple. “When the heat from the foot is applied on the top side of the ceramic wafer and cold is applied on the opposite side, from the cold of the ground, electricity is generated.”

It doesn’t look like these will be available to buy, but it looks like the Orange Chill n Charge area will be at the Glastonbury festival. I guess you can check it out there.
