Pods at Masdar City are made to get around

For those who are not familiar with Masdar City, it is a planned city currently being built by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company that relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources with sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste technology. The plan is that the city host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Some of you might remember when we reported on the Personal Rapid Transit system at Masdar City. We showed a picture of these cars on railings like cable cars, but it doesn’t look like the current construction at Masdar City is at the high point yet. They are trying the pods out on the ground, and we have a video after the jump showing it.

These pods move around at about 15 miles per hour, and are made by 2GetThere. They work with magnets as well as a fiber optic system for two-stop transfer systems at the University that are 800 meters apart.

I think that Masdar City’s system of mass transit should be a model of what will hopefully become a model for the entire world transport. I see the ideal mass transit system united under driverless pods such as these, and the days of planes, trains, and automobiles are only used in special situations.

Right now, the people who tried out these pods in the video call them “scary”. It does look like a thrill-ride in Disneyland.

The Bubble Tree: The best way to enjoy the outdoors, indoors

I’ve always wanted to enjoy nature, but sometimes it can be too…natural.

I’m referring to times when I want to have a picnic under the stars, but it is way too cold at night. Or if I want to have a dinner on the beach, but I don’t want to have sand everywhere.

This is the vision of the Bubble Tree, an invention of Pierre Stephane Dumas that allows the user to be “one with nature, but in luxury”. There is a video of it after the jump, but it is in French.

I can’t really understand all of what it is the video, but I believe that word “futuristic” sounds a lot like the French version of it. I think that at some point in the past, we thought the future (our present) would be full of transparent bubble structures, but that never really happened.

This Bubble Tree would be something I would definitely take on my next camping trip if I didn’t want to rough it. Then I could sleep under the stars without catching a cold and on a bed instead of the cold, wet ground.

Right now, it appears that the Bubble Tree is in the concept stage right now, but I see no reason why it couldn’t be mass-produced. I’m sure that it would be quite expensive.

Nanopad is a gameboard for Nanodots

Some of you might remember when we covered the Nanodots magnetic sets last summer, and the company has shown off the Nanopad at the Toy Fair in New York City last week.

For those of you who are not familiar with Nanodots, they are small balls that are individually magnetic. It isn’t exactly a toy, as a child could swallow it, but it is a construction tool like no other as tiny metal balls stick together for new shapes.

The Nanopad is a mat woven in iron that my Source says is “heavy and dense like one of those aprons you wear for dental X-rays”. The Nanodots stick to it like it was made for it, which it was. Think of it as one of those flat one-sided Lego pads that you need to start your building projects.

On one side of the Nanopad is this chess/checkerboard pattern that you can see here, so I suppose that you could shape the Nanodots into the pieces that you want. As for the other side, it has a blank area with a gauge to measure how long your line of Nanodots can go. You’ll have to see the picture of it on my Source for more information. Also included on my Source is a shot of a small plastic card designed to split complicated magnet constructions.

When the Nanopad goes on sale, it will be about $20, and Nanodots will sell for about $30 to $40 for a set of 216.

Phone Frenzy – Call Your Friends to Play

Wasn't it just a matter of time before technology crept into the inner workings of everything we hold sacred? Well, here we sit, as the ever present mobile phone invades the last bastion of non-tech family game night, the lowly board game. Does anyone remember those?

As if my husband and daughter really needed yet another way to rip through their cell phone minutes, it seems like the folks over at Buffalo Games have created just the thing to help them out, Phone Frenzy, the board game that use's everyone's mobile phone as the center of the game. Players draw cards that require a call or a text to be sent to one of the players contacts, in the hope that without being told it's a game, he or she will still play along.

Phone Frenzy is the first socially interactive party game that claims to be more about WHO you now than WHAT you know. So call your friends and ask them to sing a song, answer a question or send you a picture, and remember, you cant tell them it's a game. I already know who my go to guy is. Do you?

Phone Frenzy is for 2-10 players (not including your phone friends), and contains challenge cards, a timer, a gameboard and instructions. You knew it was just a matter of time, right?

Phone Frenzy will be available this summer for around $22.00 bucks, extra phone charges absolutely not included.
