Reduce Broken Product Deliveries

On average I am sure most of us get some Internet product delivered on a regular basis. Some may come from around the corner. Many end up coming from many miles away. Who knows what happens from the moment you place the order until it ends up in your hot hands. There's the warehouse picking and packing process. Then tagging and delivery to a distro point. Then the shipping via truck or plane or both. And the driver on the receiving end of course. Your 'new' product undergoes quite an experience before even getting opened.  Returns of broken products due to the delivery products cost retailers billions of dollars a year and cost buyers plenty of time and hassle.

Cambridge Consultants in the UK just announced creation of a device that might help us understand the extent of our parcel abuse and perhaps help online retailers realize the source of broken product problems. DropTag is designed to record the severe bumps that happen along the way and enable trackers to evaluate the progress along the way. The device communicates to an app via Bluetooth within a 50m reach and can be integrated anywhere along the delivery process. So at a receiving warehouse personnel could check the mid-delivery status of a parcel and ensure that severe – break-worthy bumps – have not occurred. DropTag can track activity for a couple weeks on one small battery. And units could be reused after battery replacement. Cost is anticipated to be less than $2. If you talk to online retailers, I am sure that the ability to find the source of drops and breaks and potentially prevent damaged goods from being delivered quickly lowers costs. And theoretically it could be used to track luggage abuse on airlines too. Stay tuned for progress on DropTag and who knows, maybe a future delivery of yours will show up with this tracking innovation.

What Leia Had Under Her Robe?

Ever wonder what Leia, Obi Wan, Yoda or any of the others had on under their robe? You figure it had to be comfortable to be so mobile and agile (well except Yoda). A creative contributor to instructables.com decided that a shoe-inspired tribute to one of our favorite droids is within anyone's reach. 'Mikeasaurus' took his knowledge of R2D2 and constructed a tribute using white heeled shoes, LEDs, batteries, foam and other items. He posted the instructions for all to see and do. Now this is no ordinary construction project. An ample amount of tools (soldering iron and propane torch for example) are needed. But for the true Star Wars fanatic…or their lady friend…these R2D2 heels are a subtle and unique tribute that will turn heads. Visit Mikeasaurus' post on instructables.com for the full 'recipie' on R2D2 shoes. And  maybe you can have that look that Leia maybe had under her robe!

Huawei heads to Africa with new Windows Phone 8 device

Huawei seems to be an up and coming smartphone manufacturer, where they have had made quite an impression at the recently concluded CES 2013 last month. Well, they do Android and Windows Phone devices, and it is the latter that we will talk about today. Microsoft and Huawei have been working together for some time now, and the culmination of their concerted efforts has resulted in a new Windows Phone device that was specially designed for Africa, which incidentally, is one of the most rapidly-growing technology markets in the world. The phone has been dubbed The Lion King, nay, I jest, but rather, it is called the Huawei 4Afrika, and will be the first in a series of smart devices that are being custom developed for the continent, and will be part of Microsoft's sweeping new 4Afrika Initiative.

As you know, Africa is not exactly the most prosperous continent on earth, and many people there still live in poverty without gaining access to the basic needs of life such as food, water and shelter. Well, it is nice to know then that the Huawei 4Afrika handset has taken this into consideration, and will be marketed as an affordable option for students, small businesses, developers, and first-time smartphone owners. Expect the Huawei 4Afrika that runs on Windows Phone 8 to debut later this February in seven countries, and they are Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa, where you can pick up this stylish device in blue, red, black, and white colors.

What kind of hardware can we find underneath the hood? For starters, this is a variant of the Ascend W1 just in case you were wondering why it looks similar from certain aspects, carrying a 4-inch display at 480 x 800 resolution, powered by a dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor, carry 4GB of internal memory, as well as the customary front and back cameras for you to capture beautiful moments, all crammed into a 10mm thin chassis. Huawei claims that its integrated power saving technology will allow the Huawei 4Afrika to have a whopping 420 hours of standby time, now how about that?

Sceptre 32-inch LED HDTV sports MHL technology

So, you are thinking that it is time you ditched that first generation LED TV in your living room, and move on with the times to one of those svelte and nearly bezel-less TVs from the likes of Samsung and LG? Perhaps, but then again, budget is always a constraint, especially in such economically challenging times for some. Sceptre has managed to strike a careful balance between price and performance all this while, and their latest Sceptre 32-inch LED HDTV is no exception, where you will be pleased to hear that it will be accompanied by MHL technology. Just what is MHL technology, you ask? Well, MHL technology has nothing to do with hockey, but it will enable smartphones and other compatible portable devices to connect directly to high-definition televisions and displays

This will be Sceptre's first LED HDTV with MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) technology in the market, where the extremely svelte 32-inch looker is said to be specially designed to deliver the ultimate interactive home entertainment experience. In fact, if this model takes off wonderfully, do expect to see more HDTVs from Sceptre that will feature MHL technology. Imagine using your large screen TV in the living room as a display or speaker for your smartphone or compatible portable devices, not to mention the HDTV's remote itself is capable of controlling the connected device.

Specially developed by the MHL consortium, MHL technology will rely on a single cable to support up to 1080p high-definition video and surround sound audio, and to sweeten the deal further, it can simultaneously charge the connected device.

What other specifications does this Sceptre 32-inch LED HDTV with MHL technology carry? For starters, it is a true 16:9 widescreen, has a 1920×1080 resolution and a rated LED backlight life of over 50,000 hours. Other integrated technologies include auto dynamic contrast enhancement, auto-volume level control, sound equalizer settings and surround sound capability. You can pick it up for $599.99 a pop if you are interested.

Takara Tomy delivers Auto Mee S mini screen cleaner

Check out this cool little gizmo from Japanese toy company Takara Tomy, who has recently introduced a cute little cleaning robot that they call the "Auto Mee S". Well, what the heck do you need a mini Roomba clone for, you ask? How about this – when was the last time you took a nice, close look at your smartphone or tablet's screen? See all of that nasty dust and smudges that have accumulated over weeks of use without any cleaning done? Yes sir, this is the purpose the Auto Mee S was designed for, to clean up the grime and dirt on smartphone and tablet LCD displays.

The Takara Tomy Auto Mee S will come with a pair of rotating cleaning papers and three tires located on its bottom, where it will help it wipe off fingerprints and dust when it travels over your smartphone or tablet display. Heck, it is even capable of knowing where the end of the screen is thanks to its built-in sensors, allowing it to prevent from cleaning beyond the designated boundaries. So far, it is said that the Auto Mee S is able to clean a smartphone's display thoroughly in just 4 minutes, taking double the amount of time to clean tablets. Out later this March 28th, you can pick up the Auto Mee S in orange, blue, pink and white colors.

R/C Quadcopter for some remote controlled fun

Remote controlled toys are dime a dozen, but once in a while, something new comes out that plays on such a premise, and the $59.99 R/C Quadcopter from Thinkgeek would definitely be one of them. All right, it might resemble that of a UFO from afar, but rest assured, it will not be the vehicle of choice for aliens to perform an invasion. Do take into consideration that this puppy is not suitable for those who are under 3 years of age since it contains small parts, but apart from that, let yourself loose with the R/C Quadcopter which comes in 4-Channel, 6 Axis Gyro, 2.4Ghz glory.

There will be a quartet of additional propellers that enables it to perform in a 360 degree mode, enabling it to perform aerial somersaults. It is nice to know that the R/C Quadcopter has kept up with the times, with the ability to be recharged via USB for its 3.7 V Li-polymer battery. A full charge is said to offer up to 7 minutes of flying time, which should be ideal to irritate the heck out of your pet cat or dog.
