All-Weather Soft Case Bike Mount from Bracketron

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 10:55 AM PDT

This device from Bracketron is for those who are in to biking, either motorbiking or pedaling. The All-Weather Soft Case Bike Mount is a way to mount a mobile device to bike’s handlebars, and it works pretty well.

I had a chance to try it out for myself, and it lives up to its promise of mounting without tools. The bolt to install the mount can be twisted by hand, and the case snaps in place easily.

The case is made to lock tight with the zipper, and I was able to interact with my iPhone’s touchscreen from there. This would have protected my iPhone from the rain with the “weather resistant housing”. Sadly, this case was too small for my Motorola Droid X, but is perfect for iPods and iPhones. It even comes with some padding to fill the gap between the device and the weather-resistant plastic screen.

All in all, the All-Weather Soft Case Bike Mount is a terrific product for bikers who want to keep their GPS easily accessible on their handlebars. I will tell you from my tests that it does increase the possibility of distracted biking.

You should be able to get it on the Bracketron website for about $39.95.

Smart String: A New Standard for Tape Measure

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 10:27 AM PDT

I once received a freebie from my bank that was a combination tape measure, calculator, and notepad with an included pen. I thought that was cool until I saw the Smart String.

The Smart String is like a tape measure but without the tape. In its place is 50 feet of 20 pound strength string. The string is not as wide as traditional measuring tape, which means you can get more in less bulky space. It also enables the user to measure less than straight shapes, like the circumference of a ball, for example.

The digital readout means that the user is no longer looking at tick marks, and the reading is accurate to three decimal places. Once the user has his or her measurement, he or she can use it on the calculator. The built-in calculator can store 3 measurements within its memory, in case you need to do a real-life story problem.

All this, plus a flashlight as well as a level bubble. Clearly, the Smart String is the way of the future for tape measure, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a new standard. One day, we might look at traditional tape measures like we look at rotary phones.

You should be able to get the Smart String for $11.99 on ThinkGeek now.

Montana Couple builds “Hobbit House”

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 09:50 AM PDT

If there is an award for biggest fan of Lord of the Rings, I believe that husband and wife Steve and Christine Michaels would take the prize.

The couple have built a house in the hills of Montana that would fit in to the Shire. I would imagine that if you entered in the address for Bilbo Baggins on Google Maps for Middle Earth, you would be led here.

Granted, it does not have the circular door that J.R.R. Tolkien emphasized in both The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and it is designed for the world of the “big folk”.

You can see a series of photos from my Source that reveal that the house is bigger than it looks. There is no way that Gandalf will be hitting his head on the crossbeams here. There is one door that is so small that it is downright impractical.

Still, this entire place looks very cozy, even though the dwellers have to mow the roof every once in while. Perhaps Peter Jackson should have filmed The Hobbit movie here, assuming that hasn’t already. The whole house cost a price of $410,000, which I’m sure would have been a fraction of a Middle Earth movie budget.

The iPhone is able to do a whole lot of stuff – not just over the screen itself, but you can also use it to control remote controlled helicopters as well. This extreme versatility that had never been seen before in any phone prior to it has made it a hugely desirable handset, so you can more or less expect the frenzy that will surround the iPhone 5′s release. Well, for the moment, you might as well as add another job description to the already long list on the iPhone 4′s resume – the iPhone Virtual Reality Viewer.

Yes sir, this unique device will work with the iPhone, rolling out immersive, three-dimensional viewing experiences. You will need not spend anything more than the $49.95 asking price since you will take advantage of free downloadable applications that will use the iPhone’s accelerometer, allowing the 3D environments within to move when the iPhone is moved.

Razer Tiamat 7.1 surround sound headset

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Razer leads the gaming peripherals pack yet again with their latest gaming headset – the Tiamat 7.1. Of course, in conjunction with the Tiamat 7.1, there is also the lesser Tiamat 2.2 which we won’t be bothered with since that makes only a small ripple in the larger scheme of things. What makes the Razer Tiamat 7.1 so special? It is touted to be the first 7.1 surround sound gaming headset in the world, delivering unprecedented tactical advantage to you whenever you are engaged with enemies in a FPS (First Person Shooter), as you know just where your enemies would descend on you, letting you make the necessary retaliatory moves to turn the tables on them.

Being the first 10-driver headset in the world, you get 5 of those in each circumaural ear cup that gives you true blue pinpoint positional surround sound. All 10 drivers will represent the 7 surround sound channels including the subwoofer; where 2 are for the center, with 1 each for the left and right, surround sound left and right, surround back left and right, and 2 for the subwoofer. The entire collection of drivers will work in unison to deliver a true surround sound experience.

Not only that, those of you who love to customize things will be pleased to know that you are able to precisely fine-tune the volume of individual audio channels, position, and bass depth, while turning on the headset's 7.1 surround sound mode when you need it – or switching over to 2.0 stereo mode or external speakers depending on the situation. This ensures your ears will always experience the best setup at all times.

There is a price to pay for everything though, and the same goes for the Razer Tiamat 7.1. This particular puppy is not going to come cheap at all, where you will need to stash away $179.99 at the moment as it is being prepared for a worldwide release sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. I would say get this from the US, as folks living in Europe are forced to pay €179.99, and when you take the weak dollar into comparison, it is a no brainer just where you should make your purchase from.

Griffin Technology announces HELO TC remote controlled helicopter

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Griffin Technology knows that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, which is why they have decided to go ahead with the release of their HELO TC remote controlled helicopter. What makes this remote controlled helicopter different from the rest that we have seen in the past? For starters, this particular model will be able to be controlled through any iOS-powered device via its touchscreen display. To put it in a nutshell, your iOS device is actually a remote control for the HELO TC – making it an even more indispensable part of your life, no?

Let us check out just what the HELO TC is able to bring to the table. For starters, this will be a twin-rotored, indoor helicopter that has been constructed using a lightweight metal frame complete with a black polycarbonate body. Equipped with a Flight Deck infrared module, you will plug that particular bit into an iOS device in order for it to transmit control signals to the helicopter.

You will be able to choose from two different flight modes – Touch Control, where we suspect most people would have a field day with it since it will rely on the multitouch display in order to control the HELO TC's throttle and joystick, while there is the Tilt to Steer mode that relies on the iOS device's accelerometers to get the navigating job done. For instance, if you tilt the iOS device, it will move the helicopter forward, back and side to side. Heck, the app is even able to record and store up to three Flight Plans so that you (or other “pilots”) can repeat a particular flight pattern in a jiffy.

The HELO TC comes with a built-in battery which can be juiced up from just about any USB power source, and that includes your computer's USB port. As for the Flight Deck module, that will require a quartet of AAA batteries, where it will remain plugged within the iOS device's headphone jack. Expect to fork out $49.99 for the HELO TC if you’re interested, where it ought to arrive in time for the holiday season.
