Sometimes, while I sit at my desk and toil away the hours working on my computer, I get lonely. It only stand to reason that I would enjoy the company of a friend. My perfect friend would be one that doesnt comment on my work, doesnt eat my food and wont make any noise while I’m trying to concentrate! So please welcome Andru! You probably recognize him as a little Android, but he is also a nifty little green phone charger made especially for Android phones, although of course, he will graciously charge any USB-powered device you would like to entrust him with. He comes with a micro-USB plug,but you can also use your own. Andru is only about two and a half inches tall and has movable arms and malleable little green antennae, his eyes light up to alert you to charging status (White for standby, blue for charge) and he comes with his very own stand, and cable. He doesn’t disturb, and listens quite attentively. I can also tell by his expression, Andru is incredibly non-judgemental. It is amazing to me what technology is capable of, and everyday I learn something that makes me wonder just how close we will actually come to some of the fictitious “marvels” seen on the sci-fi movies I used to love. Space travel, whole body health scanners, robotic arms and limbs. I wish I could live an extra 100 years just to see how far progress will take us. I have to say though, I am already impressed. An 83 year old woman who was afflicted with a bone wasting disease that had claimed most of her lower jaw and left her unable to properly eat, or speak was the recipient of the very first 3-D printed jawbone. The jawbone, was made completely of a titanium powder sintered together layer by layer. (Sintering I have learned, is the process of taking a powdered substance and placing it in a mold, and heating it above its melting point.) After the lower mandible was constructed, it was coated in a biocompatible ceramic and then it was “installed” during a four-hour surgery. The woman was able to say a few words only hours later. Her new jaw is a bit heavier than her old one, but appears to be well tolerated. She was able to go home just four days later. Doctors feel as though this opens the door for the technology to allow for custom bone and joint replacements and someday It could pave the way for all kinds of 3-D printed body parts. See? Amazing. The D800 is a new FX-format model that delivers a mind-boggling 36.3-megapixels, and at its core is superior image quality that is equal to that achieved with medium-format digital cameras. Folks who want to get even more from the D800 will be pleased to hear that Nikon has plans as well to roll out the D800E, another model which delivers increased resolution for images with more dimension. Other aesthetic improvements include a viewfinder frame coverage of approximately 100% and a lightweight and durable water- and dust-resistant body. With the use of magnesium alloy for the body, it enables the camera to be as durable as the D700, while tipping the scales at 10% less. Definitely useful as it ensures your hot drinks remain hot – and for longer periods of time, of course. All you need to do is make sure that your computer as an available USB port, and place your cup on top of it. It will fit most cups and slim mugs, and will also have a DC to USB cable just in case you want to plug it into any available power outlet at that point in time.
