Construct Your Own Vehicle

Did you have a basket of LEGO™ as a kid? A kid could play with LEGO or other construction toys for hours on end. Build houses, vehicles or whatever. But did you ever wish that someday you could have life sized houses or vehicles just like you designed? I did. Now days you have Minecraft and other video-based construction games which introduce different skills. But really, does building a virtual world stimulate the brain as much as building with your hands? I tend to believe not.

Over on Quirky.com, the site where users vote on which inventions should come to market, a creative kids construction product just got the go ahead for Quirky involvement. SPARK hopes to spark your kids imagination with modular parts that can be interchanged to create wheeled vehicles and more. SPARK really encourages kids to get as creative as possible while also letting them learn about mechanics of bikes, cars and the like. The concept is that SPARK comes with certain parts and pieces. Pedals, batteries and other devices could be added to make them functional. Or if parents want to go beyond vehicles perhaps other kits could be sold to encourage building of other objects. And what a great way to get parents involved in the building process. Stay tuned to Quirky for next steps in the SPARK development process. And look forward to finally constructing life sized gizmos.

Smart Shoes, Yes Shoes

South by Southwest – the music, film and interactive festival/conference always guarantees to highlight some of the up-and-coming everything. Venues across Austin are packed to take in new bands and musicians. New directors are discovered through the film festival. And new, sometimes conceptual, technology takes center stage and gain following in the interactive portion of SXSW including technology like Twitter and Foursquare. All the big companies now have a presence. Including Google, who teased attendees with another interactive and wearable technology.

Google Glass will enable you to run your life via your eyes. But what about those days when you need some extra motivation? Maybe you don't feel so ambitious. You need Google Shoes, speaking basketball-looking shoes.  In conjunction with Adidas and YesYesNo, an interactive project company, and the famous agency 72andSunny, Google developed a device that attaches to the laces of the shoe. The accelerometer and gyroscope contained within help the device understand what you may or may not be doing. Based on your activity it speaks one of 250 pre-recorded and somewhat smart-alec phrases that do everything from praise you to rip on you. So yes, if you are sitting around your shoe could tell you that it is bored. Or if you are intensely working out maybe it will congratulate you. Bluetooth is included if you want to hook it up to a speaker or earpiece. And like other techy shoes this could track your activity too. Don't hold your breath though. Google made it apparent that there were no long term plans to launch Google Shoes. It was a SXSW concept. But if we all end up toiling in laziness due to the other products that Google brings to our lives maybe this nagging voice concept could become a necessity!

Monster Watts rolls out wireless chargers for Galaxy S3

Ever heard of Monster Watts before? They sure as heck sound as though they were a company that rolled out audio products, no? Well, Monster Watts is an innovator of power accessories that will cater for both sides of the divide, and I am referring to both Apple and Samsung cmaps here. This time around, the favor lies on folks who prefer to put their weight behind the Samsung brand name, as Monster Watts has a trio of wireless chargers which were specially thought up of for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

I know, most of you out there would be looking forward to nothing but the Samsung Galaxy S4 this coming March 14th, but in the meantime, do remember that the Galaxy S3 still remains the flagship smartphone for Samsung. At least for a couple more days, that is! Having said that. the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been considered by certain quarters to be the most advanced wireless phone to date, but for what it is worth, it still needs to be plugged in to a power outlet whenever its battery levels plummet south.

With Monster Watts' trio of wireless chargers for the Galaxy S3, you no longer need to fumble with messy cables at night, and neither will you pull the charger out of the wall to answer a call, by accident, break the connector or drop the phone. No sir, kiss those incidences goodbye, as your Galaxy S3 will now gain wireless charging capability within seconds.

Of course, you still have the choice of falling back to the standard issue wall charger if the need arises, but that is entirely your choice. The first Stealth wireless receiver and charger set is a snap to install, as the former is ultra-thin and fits under the S3's existing back cover without much fuss, retailing for $68 a pop. As for the second Simple wireless receiver back cover and charger set, it is also easy to install, adding around 1 mm to the thickness and will retail for $98. The third Super Pack model will come in the form of an external case that has a built-in wireless receiver and rechargeable back up battery, requiring you to slide the Galaxy S3 into it, and it will be the most expensive of the lot at $118.

AT&T to offer BlackBerry Z10 this March 22nd

What used to be one of the major smartphone manufacturers in the world is now nothing but a pale shadow of itself, and I am referring to the company formerly known as Research In Motion, or RIM for short, that hails from the Great White North. Well, RIM changed their name recently at the end of January this year to just BlackBerry, in an effort to be able to better connect with their customer base (future or current one), in addition to introducing a couple of new BlackBerry smartphones with the all-new BlackBerry 10 operating system. Of course, the BlackBerry Z10 is one of them, and we have word from AT&T that from March 22nd onwards, the BlackBerry Z10 will be made available to interested parties.

Pre-sales of the BlackBerry Z10 will kick off from March 12th onwards, where you will have to drop $199.99 for the BlackBerry Z10 which will come with a two-year agreement. Of course, the asking price is pretty much in line with the rest of the high end models from other smartphone manufacturers regardless of the mobile operating system. Corporate customers or those receiving a corporate discount can get their BlackBerry Z10 via all available AT&T channels when March 22nd rolls around.

What makes the BlackBerry Z10 more special than all the other BlackBerry devices out there? For starters, this is said to be the first smartphone that has launched with the re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented BlackBerry 10 platform, where it will enable customers to enjoy a powerful and unique new mobile experience. Also, this is the fastest and most advanced BlackBerry smartphone to date, and will boast of an all-touch keyboard, a high-resolution 4.2-inch display and an 8-megapixel camera that is more than capable of handling 1080p HD video. Other than that, this is also the first BlackBerry device that plays nice with AT&T’s 4G LTE network. Any takers?

Finger Swipe Headphones

Owning a pair of headphones is no big deal these days, but a pair of wireless headphones? Those tend to still be a novelty among some social circles, but they surely are getting more and more popular considering how there are no pesky wires or cables to worry about. After all, who likes having to unravel cables whenever they are just about to embark on a session of non-stop listening pleasure? Hammacher might have just the thing for those who hate cables – the $149.95 Finger Swipe Headphones.

The Finger Swipe Headphones are not only headphones that feature wireless Bluetooth connectivity, the name itself also implies another trick up its sleeves – they can control the volume with but a single finger slide. Yes sir, it seems that sensitive touchpads that you normally find in smartphones and tablets are now available on the earpieces of the Finger Swipe Headphones itself. Swiping up and down controls the volume, whereas swiping a finger horizontally will advance or rewind a track. Whenever there is an incoming call, the music will stop automatically. Your ears will definitely appreciate the frequency response of 20Hz to 2KHz, where its 40mm drivers deliver rich sound from any audio source. With its built-in rechargeable battery, it can offer up to 10 hours of listening on a single hour charge.

One Stop Chop Cutting Board

Since we are all about convergence devices these days, why not let the humble chopping board at home also feature a similar idea? Thinkgeek has just the thing for your kitchen with the $39.99 One Stop Chop Cutting Board, where it comes across as a raised cutting board that has storage drawers right under it. Yes sir, this means you can always keep your essential chopping, slicing and dicing utensils within the cutting board itself without having to worry about where the knife went.

Made out of bamboo, its surface has been treated with mineral oil to make it highly durable and beautiful. A trio of prep drawers can be pulled out so you are able to slide chopped food in them if you so desire, minimizing the amount of cups or bowls around the cutting board area of the kitchen. Heck, you can even opt to bring the entire One Stop Chop Cutting Board over to the stove for easy and spill-free cooking, especially when you have finely chopped onions ready and waiting to be thrown into the nearest pot for that lovely onion soup recipe.
