iDermal – The Latest in High Tech Body Modification

Posted: 16 May 2012 07:37 AM PDT

Okay, so in case you missed it, I just did a post on wearable technology, but what if you didn’t want to wait till the end of this year, or simply didn’t want to shell out the big bucks to have a computer contained within your eyeglass lens, or neatly strapped to your wrist? Well, there is another option.

Check out hardcore technology lover Dave Hurban, mild mannered  tattoo artist and piercer by day who has gone one step beyond in order to have the ultimate in wearable tech. Mr Hurban recently pierced his wrist and then surgically implanted four super strength magnets in the resulting pocket in order to magnetically attach his iPod, to his flesh.

Of course I find that a funky colorful strap seems to work equally well, but it certainly has much less of the wow factor associated with surgically implanted dermal anchors. The procedure, now called iDermal, is being used primarily to anchor an iPod Nano to your skin which seems to withstand a solid workout or a jog in the park… and functions equally well as a simple strapless watch, for when you are feeling less, shall we say… sporty?

I have to say I’ve seen other body modifications that are far less practical, and I am a strong believer in “to each his own”, however, as much as I love my gadgets I’m not sure I’m ready to give them a permanent home attached to my body. Although, as much as I lose my keys, I might need to consider a dermal anchor implanted somewhere….. now be nice.

Google’s Project Glass – Welcome to the Future

Posted: 16 May 2012 06:32 AM PDT

Imagine this if you will, you’re walking down the street engaged in a video chat with your friend, who is 6000 miles away, taking pictures and planning your day when you realize you don’t know where you are, as you look up and to the right a computer screen appears in your line of vision, and you ask it to find the nearest subway station, and it does. The coolest part of this story is that this technology is out on our streets, right now.

Welcome Google’s foray into augmented reality glasses, housed in a pair of sleek and uber-cool glasses is a clear display that sits above just one of your eyes, these glasses can stream news and information, access maps and send or receive messages via voice command. The glasses can also take video or pictures, Android based, with a 3 or 4 G connection the Google glasses will also have motion sensors and GPS.

Initial reports tell me that the glasses will contain many voice activated features but they will also require some head tilting and nodding in order to scroll or click, and while reports say that the Google Glasses navigation will be easy to learn, I think it will make for some interesting people watching… Some reports are also pointing to an augmented reality contact lens already being under development.

Okay, so I love where this is heading, Apple is also working on a “wearable computer” project, but theirs is one that would be worn strapped to your wrist – I’m thinking I like the idea of the glasses better… Somehow it just seems more high tech, what do you guys think?

No word on price yet, but a best guess says it will probably be in line with a quality Smartphone, and you might be able to have a pair in your hot little hands by the end of the year!

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the lightest Ultrabook in the market

Posted: 16 May 2012 06:30 AM PDT

We all know that Ultrabooks came about as a response to the Apple MacBook Air, where the latter was amazingly thin, so much so that there were reports online that some people tossed out their MacBook Air alongside a stack of newspapers simply because it was too thin to be noticed. Well, Ultrabooks have come some way since it was introduced not too long ago, and the thin form factor remains a prevalent design theme that is set to stay. What needs to change, however, is the type of hardware that is stashed inside, and Lenovo has just offered the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, touting it to be the lightest Ultrabook in the market at press time.

Tipping the scales at a wee bit under 3 pounds (that is approximately 1.2kg for those who prefer to stick to the metric system), it is really light, and for the fact that there are not that many Ultrabooks that share the same size segment as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon. After all, majority of the Ultrabooks out there are approximately 13″ in size, while the smaller ones measure 11″, which are similar to what the MacBook Air comes in.

The 14″ ThinkPad X1 Carbon from Lenovo also measures 0.71″ thin, so you have a better idea on just what kind of thickness it has. There is no word as to when the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon will hit the markets for sale, and neither do we have a whiff on how much the latest Ultrabook is going to cost, apart from the fact that the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon will arrive in June later this year. That would mean around a month and a half’s wait at most, and there is also a reason as to why it has the name “Carbon” inside – simply because it is made out of a Carbon Fiber chassis, resulting in the relative lightweight nature of the Ultrabook.

How about its performance? Not too shabby either, as it runs off an Intel Core series processor from the latest Ivy Bridge family, and ought to have an adequate supply of RAM, the aforementioned 14″ display with 1600 × 900 native resolution, at least one USB 3.0 port, Wireless-N (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth (possibly 4.0) connectivity. Something tells me this is not going to come cheap though.

LG Optimus 4X HD to arrive in Europe soon

Posted: 16 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

LG has announced that its Optimus 4X HD, first revealed to the world at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, in February this year, is finally about to make its debut in the world markets – starting with Western Europe first. Just what kind of hardware does the LG Optimus 4X HD carry? Let us go through a little bit of a refresher here – you will, of course, get the uber speedy NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, not to mention the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system right out of the box so that you need not wait for any software update after that.

The LG Optimus 4X HD is also said to carry one of the biggest capacities among quad-core smartphones at 2,150mAh, and the 4.7″ True HD IPS display is definitely a treat for your eyes. Since the MWC announcement, the LG Optimus 4X HD has also been slapped with a new SiO+ battery technology, Quick Memo for enhanced productivity and Media Plex that delivers an advanced multimedia experience.

To get a better idea on how the NVIDIA 4-PLUS-1 Quad-Core mobile processor works, the Tegra 3 will make use of a fifth core for the best power efficiency and outstanding performance. In order to eke out the maximum performance, the Tegra 3 is will run on all four cores, although when it is in standby mode, the processor will default to the fifth, a battery-saver core. LG claims that a future upgrade will see the introduction of the Eco-Mode which was tailor made for the Optimus 4X HD, where it will enable users to manually shut down any of the Tegra 3's cores for additional control over power consumption and performance.

Nice to know that the battery itself is removable, so you can always swap it out with another battery when the going gets tough and there is no power outlet in sight. Definitely a plus point here. As for the Quick Memo feature that we talked about earlier, this integration into the operating system of the Optimus 4X HD allows it to be activated within any application, ranging from games to video players. You can also jot memos or notes over a screen image, saving it up for later, or to share it with others.

No idea on pricing just yet, but we do know that Europe will receive the Optimus 4X HD first before Asia, CIS, South and Central America get their hands on it.

Air Guitar lets you shred maniacally

Posted: 16 May 2012 05:30 AM PDT

There are some awesome moments in life when you share it with your best friend(s) over a cup of your favorite drinks as well as some pizza, and you are able to let your hair down, acting whatever way you like without receiving a shred of despise. Well, the $19.99 Air Guitar would definitely be the tool for the moment if you are musically inclined, as you can go jumping around your room, smashing an imaginary guitar and yet using it to crank out some really wicked tunes in the process. Yes sir, the Air Guitar will merge design and style into a single handheld device, letting you create music on the spot with but a single press of a button and a flick of the wrist.

There are even 10 presets so that you can fool your way through (albeit for a while) a group of friends, where among the 10 songs include Are You Gonna Be My Girl (Jet), Walk This Way (Aerosmith), Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple), and Let It Be (The Beatles). The built-in speaker should be loud enough to work and fill up an entire room with its sound, and you can juice things up a bit by connecting it to an external amplifier. A couple of AAA batteries are required to power the Air Guitar.

Fujitsu collar monitor for your pooch

Posted: 16 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT

The cloud can also be described as an abstract place, where your digital consciousness has a residence there since facets of your life are stored in that virtual area which is backed by physical disks, located somewhere in the world. Fujitsu intends to bring the use of cloud technology to a new level thanks to a spanking new collar-mounted device that was specially designed to monitor your dog’s activity level. Of course, this will not rely on something as monotonous as ensuring your pooch’s Twitter stream is updated from time to time, but offers far more important information including delivering helpful health monitoring, activity level, and the external temperature, and all such information is sent to a cloud-based health service that is tipped to roll out sometime later in the year. Fujitsu claims that the device being small and lightweight, consumes very little power, allowing your pooch to wear it just about round the clock. No idea on whether it is waterproof or not though, as some dogs just love swimming more than most. I guess our four legged friend can now go to the great big cloud up there even when they are still alive, no?
