Sprint/HTC announce the EVO 3D and View Tablet at CTIA Spring 2011

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 02:46 PM PDT

Today at CTIA Spring 2011, Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse (pictured) took the stage with HTC North American president Jason Mackenzie in order to announce two big EVO products.

The first was the HTC EVO 3D, which required the audience put on special glasses for the presentation. The phone has a 4.3-inch 3D screen that is no glasses required, as it shoots 3D pictures and video with two 5 Megapixel camera. It is very reminiscent of the LG Thrill and its 3D features, which makes me wonder if this will be the thing to have on your phone in the next few years.

The second was the HTC EVO View 7-inch tablet. This isn’t HTC’s first foray into the tablet world, but Mackenzie stated that they took their time getting this one. Part of what makes the View different is that a digital pen known as the Scribe can do a lot more with notetaking than most tablets. I saw a demonstration of it after the session was done, and it looks like a student may not have to bring pen and paper to the classroom again with this tablet.

That’s two new impressive products, and both of them can be used as a hotspot. Unfortunately, HTC could not give me a specific price, and were very general about their release date as “some time in the summer”.

Samsung announces the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 at CTIA Spring 2011

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 02:17 PM PDT

The last time that Samsung announced a new Galaxy Tab tablet, they had a special press conference, and everyone received a free tablet. If only that had been the case at CTIA Spring 2011, for I was there for the special announcement this morning.

The company announced the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 8.9. Even though it was supposed to be a surprised, most already knew about it. A few weeks ago, some specs leaked out on the 10.1 inch Galaxy Tab, and Samsung had this ad campaign with the numbers 7 8 9 10, an obvious clue that an 8.9 inch tablet would be sandwhiched between the 7-inch and 10-inch tablets.

Samsung’s theme was about getting a “Tab Life”, and their presentation showed a lot ordinary people trying out their Tab tablets. The company stated that these new tablets are the thinnest out there at 8.6 mm. The 10.1 weighs in at a mere 595 grams, and has a battery life of about 10 hours worth of use. Samsung seemed to talk more about the 10.1 than the smaller 8.9.

The 10.1 will be out on June 8th, and the price of the Wi-Fi version will be $499 for the 16GB and $599 for the 32GB. As for the 8.9, there isn’t a more specific release date, but we know the price for the Wi-Fi model: $469 for the 16 GB model and $569 for the 32 GB.

SuperTooth HD – Hey Mom! I’m Texting and Driving

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 10:10 AM PDT

My daughter is only 8, but I'm already worried about when she starts driving. I keep saying that all the high tech distractions we face, will be gone by the time I have to worry about her. I thought I was just making myself feel better, but no, things really are changing. It looks like we already have the option to text, dial our phones and use Facebook, without ever taking our eyes off the road. Phew!

SuperTooth is launching the SuperTooth HD– the most advanced Bluetooth speakerphone on the market today, it has three times the power than other models and it allows drivers to answer incoming calls, select pre-dialed phone numbers, check battery level or retrieve voicemail via voice. The SuperTooth Handsfree Assistant feature, powered by Dial2Do, allows drivers to compose and send Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and SMS messages via voice alone.

State-of-the-art voice commands are designed to provide a hands-free solution for phone use in the car. The SuperTooth HD features two speakers with a 5 watt audio output, 5.4 watt amplifier and built-in dual microphones to pick up voices more clearly. Just clip the SuperTooth HD onto the car’s sun visor, no installation required.

Watch for the SuperTooth HD in April for around $129 with a USB cable and a car charger included. It’s compatible with all Bluetooth-enabled phones, including iPhones, BlackBerrys and other smartphones with an Android OS or Windows Mobile operating system. The dial2do service is about $6.00 bucks a month and is required for speech to text services.

Cobra PhoneLynx for Android announced

Posted:

Cobra Electronics has just announced that May 1st is a date you should mark on your calendar if you want to maximize your budget – after all, the Cobra PhoneLynx that they will offer then will be an innovative Bluetooth-enabled device which allows one to eliminate the expense of a landline service plan – all the while ensuring the convenience and comfort of using an existing home phone or small office handsets is experienced.

The Cobra PhoneLynx for Android is currently on parade at the CTIA Wireless event in Florida so that you can always take a gander at it if you’re on your way to the venue. Just what does the Cobra PhoneLynx offer for the masses? We’ll find out in the extended post.

I’m sure that most of you would have already gotten rid of your landline because a cell phone service just makes more sense, and this trend does not seem to stop but rather, accelerate in the coming years. There is also the case of many people not doing anything about the leftover home phone handsets after disconnecting their landlines, leaving them to gather dust.

Well, the Cobra PhoneLynx offers a second chance at life for that disenchanted bunch of devices – you need not hook them up to a traditional telephone wall jack, but when plugged into the Cobra PhoneLynx, it will then originate and receive calls through the your cell phone service plan. Isn’t that a smart move?

Cobra PhoneLynx for Android will ship with a complementary new Android App which will enhance the PhoneLynx user experience for Android smartphone users by a margin, boasting powerful feature integration between home phone systems and Android devices. Among the features include Voice Dial support, Message Waiting, Speed Dial, Auto Hands-free, Voicemail and an Alarm Clock.

Cobra PhoneLynx for Android will be out on the first day of May this year, retailing for $59.99 if you’re interested. Could we see a rise in the price of second hand home phone handsets?

Snapkeys has the potential to change everything

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

It is not every day that I get to say that a device can “change everything”. That really is a big boast, and SnapKeys will probably just change the way we type. Hey, for a writer, that is everything.

I first saw SnapKeys at CES last January. At the time, it was just typing on an invisible keyboard, and I didn’t think much of it. They showed me how it works now at CTIA Spring 2011 Showstoppers last night, and it is quite impressive.

SnapKeys works with six boxes that can be accessed with the users thumbs. There are four boxes devoted to the letters, and this is where it gets kind of complex. Find out how it all works after the jump.

In the green box are the letters where two points hit the ground, and the yellow one is for letters where one point hits the ground. The pink box are the letters with a closed circle, and the blue box are letters with a wide base. That is a little complicated, and somehow those letters are enough to usually form the right word. If it isn’t, then hit the “Sp” key on the right and find the right one with a swipe. I believe the “Bk” key on the left is the Backspace key.

According to the guy from the company, it is easy to adapt to, and ten-year-old kids can do it. This is definitely a new way to type on a touchscreen that could really catch on, but we will see.

Salt & Power Shakers

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 07:45 AM PDT

The dining table often uses pretty standard fare for most folks, even when it comes to utensils and the ilk. Well, if you want to be different from the rest of the Joneses out there, you would do well to consider the Salt & Power Shakers. This unique set will definitely go down well with all those who have a bent for gizmos and geekery, and to cost only $18? Sounds (and looks) like a bargain to us.

After all, our bodies too need “batteries” which come in the form of food, and with the right amount of pepper and salt on a dish, your taste buds will explode in ecstasy. Why not do so with this special set? A transparent strip on the outside that lines up vertically will let you know just how much content there is left inside before you make a refill. Shaped to look like a D-cell battery, a rubber stopper is located at the bottom when you need to fill it up.

Mauer Batting Trainer

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 07:31 AM PDT

You know what they say – practice makes perfect, and this general rule applies across a wide spectrum of things in life, even more so when it comes to disciplines such as sport and music. Of course, the same holds for math, too, and if you want to apply statistics to sport, then the Mauer Batting Trainer does seem to be the perfect device to purchase as you prepare to sweat it out this summer.

You might want to take note that this device was purchased (and more importantly, used) by three-time American League batting champion Joe Mauer, making it one of the baseball hitting trainers that will definitely do its it in helping you develop better bat speed, reflexes, and proper hitting mechanics. Apart from that, if you happen to be one of those lone ranger types, then this will also do away with the need for a practice partner, as it automatically drops a ball every six, eight, or 10 seconds.

This ought to help batters achieve a proper swing tempo, patience, and learn how to hit an off-speed pitch. There is a trampoline under the spout which enables hitters to practice soft toss hitting, a technique that is used by professional baseball players. Powered by a trio of AA batteries, the Mauer Batting Trainer will cost you $99.95 to bring home.

Quicktionary TS Premium offers a portable dictionary that does more than just provide meanings

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Wizcom Technologies is a pretty well known name when it comes to portable scanning pens, and the latest device from its stables would be the Quicktionary TS Premium, which is actually a pocket sized, user-friendly portable dictionary and scanning device that will allow not only students but folks who work in multilingual environments to translate and define printed material regardless of where they are – all the while without disrupting their reading process.

The Quicktionary TS Premium is also more than capable of scanning printed text and transferring it over to a PC for future or later reference. According to Wizcom Technologies, their products are developed using unique expertise in linguistics and image processing. This has led them to achieve ‘best-of-breed’ milestones in the fields of microelectronics, electro-optics and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) algorithm engines, hence leading to the birth of the Quicktionary TS Premium.

The Quicktionary TS Premium itself can be customized using the Wizcard, which in essence is an extension card that enables additional content to be added to the Pen, including dictionaries, OCR languages and text-to-speech components. If you so desire, you can easily switch between the Wizcard and original flash card in order to take advantage of the wide range of content that are available.

Of course, Wizcom isn’t going to rest on their laurels and not do anything about the situation but will instead strive to constantly develop new content in order to provide text solutions for a wide range of languages, and for users, that would mean those which were not previously addressed by any other device or program. Take for example, the Hebrew to Russian and Hebrew to English dictionaries. Seems like something students and language buffs would like to own in their repertoire of gizmos.

It will cost slightly north of 200 Euros a pop, so if you’re interested in starting off your semester with a bang, then the Quicktionary TS Premium might just be the thing for you.

LG Thrill 4G announced

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

The world of 4G phones are getting populated by the day, and here we have the LG Thrill 4G that will be made available as an exclusive hanset to AT&T retail stores throughout the US albeit in the coming months. It will feature high-speed integration of dual-core/dual-channel 1GHz RAM that is more than capable of handling 4G speeds, delivering a powerful smartphone experience regardless of where yo are.

It must be taken note as well that the LG Thrill 4G is also the first smartphone in the US that will come with a 3D display – albeit not requiring you to wear a pair of 3D glasses in the process, so that ought to up the ante when you’re vying with the rest of your mates to have the best handset among yourselves.

Touted to be the ideal handset when it comes to on-the-move entertainment, the LG Thrill 4G will not disappoint your eyes as it comes with a 4.3-inch capacitive touch screen display alongside the aforementioned 1GHz dual-core/dual-channel RAM that paves the way for powerful mobile processing, flawless viewing and effortless multitasking.

Since 3D is all the rage this year at CES when it comes to flat screen TVs, cameras and camcorders, you will be able to shoot life-like images, video and even experience real 3D gaming. With two 5-megapixel stereoscopic 3D cameras, it will also be accompanied by a microSD memory card slot, where it can shoot crystal-clear 3D images and view 720p HD 3D video playback in a jiffy without any slowdown (fingers crossed!).

You can also share your own generated 3D content with other people worldwide, as HDMI-out and DLNA will come with wireless content streaming options, making the sharing of 3D content a whole lot easier than ever. It still remains to be seen how much the LG Thrill 4G will cost when it arrives, and when – but we do think that this will reside somewhere in the top tier of things. My colleague, Mark R who is at CTIA Wireless, did mention about AT&T launching it though.

AT&T Introduces the HTC HD7S and the LG Thrill

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:33 PM PDT

Just to let you know, I am at CTIA Spring 2011 in Orlando, Florida. CTIA is a big tradeshow where many of the mobile tech-related business put themselves on display. It would appear that AT&T has jumped the gun with big mobile announcements as they unveiled two new phones that they will carry.

The first is the Thrill from LG, and its most unique feature is that it does 3D. Users can shoot 3D videos or stills with the 5 Megapixel camera, and watch them on the glasses-free 3D 4.3 inch screen. It also features a dual-core 1GHz processor, 4G capability, with Android 2.2 (possibly 2.3 later).

The second is the HTC HD7S, and it is a Windows 7 phone. It also has the 1GHz processor as well as a 5 Megapixel camera. The screen is in 2D, but it is a 4.3 inch WVGA super LCD high resolution display.

I don’t seem to have any word on when the LG Thrill will be released, nor a price. The word on the HTC HD7S is that it will be out at AT&T retails locations as well as the company website “sometime within the next few weeks”. I’m not certain on the price of the HD7S, but it does come pre-loaded with a U-verse Mobile application which allows the user to download an watch TV shows, and this service costs $9.99 a month. On a somewhat related note, users of the LG Thrill can enjoy downloading 3D content with “LG 3D Space” for videos, images, and games.
