Candy Chemistry Set

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:52 AM PDT

Few children make it through the grocery store without a "can I have some candy?" I think all parents are sick of facing the question. And sure, you want to reward the kids, but did they do anything to deserve it?

Next time you are faced with the dilemma show the kids the Candy Chemistry Set and say "sure, just make your own candy!" The Candy Chemistry Set from ScientificsOnline.com contains ingredients you would find in your kitchen but challenges the creator's brains in math, science and cooking. Your junior chemists will learn about topics like crystallization when making rock candy or heat and phases of matter when melting chocolate. They also learn about triboluminescence when making wintergreen candies. (By the way, triboluminescence is the phenomenon that kicks off light when you chomp on wintergreen candies in the dark. Admit it – you did it as a kid.) Cooking skills like measures, weights and volumes are also learned. Included are 25 experiments, molds, a candy thermometer, utencils and a manual all for $34.95. Scientists age 10+, with a recommended adult supervising, will love the set and their concoctions.

Keyboards Get Smart Too

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 09:29 AM PDT

With the evolution of computers came the deterioration of our bodies. In addition to bad posture, we suffer in our hands and wrists, shoulders and necks. Think about back and forth your neck does in an average day going from keyboard to screen and back. Sure, ergonomic solutions exist for certain elements of PC use, but the keyboard-monitor shuffle with the neck still remains a problem. In reality it will remain a problem until the keyboard – relatively unchanged since inception – takes a new form.

Dov Moran, inventor of the USB flash drive, had the same dilemma finding himself constantly looking back and forth. So he did something about it. Welcome to Smartype, a keyboard with built in screen. It displays the last line you typed – while also displaying it on your monitor. It reduces the need to look back and forth at what you typed, relieving neck strain and eye strain. And theoretically you become more productive as you maintain focus on the keyboard versus the back and forth to the monitor. Although currently only available in Israel, Smartype is expected in more countries soon, with an estimated price of $100. Conceptually it makes sense, but let's see what the market says once launched worldwide. Interested? Visit thesmartype.com for news or to sign up for email alerts once widely available.

World’s Largest Toe Tap Piano

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 06:30 AM PDT

I just love the way that Hammacher tends to use superlative words in describing their goods, and this time around, we have what they deem to be the $79.95 World’s Largest Toe Tap Piano. Of course, I do not doubt them after seeing the size of that thing, which measures a whopping 10-feet in length, making it indisputably the largest dance-on piano around the globe. Boasting a 35' square space, this piano mat allows your merry home of budding virtuosos to compose their own music as they dance, jump, and basically romp on the keys, using their ever increasing body weight to their advantage.

The thing is, chances are they will not be composing the next big tune, but rather, make a large, random din around the home. You ought to be best prepared if you intend to work at home while your kids are having the time of their lives with the World’s Largest Toe Tap Piano, where a pair of ear plugs would come highly recommended. After all, screaming kids are already something that takes getting used to, but with the accompaniment of music – random one at that? Its insane, but worth every penny you pay for. Replicating sound from eight different instruments (piano, saxophone, violin, organ, trumpet, harp, vibraphone, guitar), it can also hook up to an iPod or another MP3 player, letting budding musicians play along to their favorite songs if they want to.

Talking Teaching Solar System Scale

There is nothing quite like learning from an interactive device, which is why we figured out that this $49.95 Talking Teaching Solar System Scale is worth every penny if you want to start teaching your little ones on all the planets in our solar system. I do wonder whether Pluto has been given the boot this time around, but we do know that with the Talking Teaching Solar System Scale, you and your family are privy to 40 fun facts concerning our solar system, where it will calculates each stander’s weight on each planet.

The voice you hear is that of renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, where the mat’s speaker reproduces a series of facts each time someone steps onto a planet, making sure concepts of gravity, weight, and mass are introduced along the way. Powered by a trio of AA batteries, it might get rather boring after a while – especially when those sponge-like minds around the home has absorbed all the facts spewed out many times over.

Nokia Lumia 920 fits Windows Phone 8 like a glove

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 05:30 AM PDT

Nokia Lumia 920 is the best Windows Phone 8 smartphone yet. Wait a minute, don’t you think that this is quite the lofty claim to make, especially when you consider the fact that Windows Phone 8 is not even in the market yet, and neither is the Nokia Lumia 920? Well, for starters, what we saw earlier yesterday morning at New York was really impressive to say the least. Not only did the Lumia 920 perform admirably on stage, the extremely responsive mobile operating system from Microsoft also did its part well. Let us take a closer look to see what else the Finnish smartphone company has thrown into the mix for the Lumia 920, shall we?

There are plenty of firsts when it comes to technology and the Nokia Lumia 920 in the world of smartphones, and that is on top of all the advantages offered by Windows Phone 8. For starters, how about an exceptional industrial design that carries what Nokia deems to be the "best camera we've ever put in a smartphone"? That is certainly a lofty claim to live up to, but the most recent PureView technology crammed inside did impress with its low light photography capability compared to its predecessors, and when you merge this with genuine Optical Image Stabilization, you get dramatically reduced blur and movement even under darker than normal conditions. .

The Nokia Lumia 920 will also come with PureMotion HD+ display technology which powers its generous 4.5" display, where it has been touted to be the fastest, brightest, most-sensitive and highest resolution display to date in its class. I wonder, will the iPhone 5 that is rumored to be announced next week be able to live up to the PureMotion HD+ display, or best it? Only time will tell.

Sporting a 2,000mAh battery that ought to last the distance, the Nokia Lumia 920 will also support wireless charging capability, allowing you to juice up your handset in style without any more pesky wires or cables around the home. Nokia Maps for Windows Phone 8 also ushers in a whole new generation of getting around, where it can function offline even and will integrate walk navigation, an augmented reality view and venue maps.

No idea on pricing, but the Lumia 920 will arrive before the year is over, coming in yellow, red, grey, white and black shades.

Motorola RAZR HD announced

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 05:00 AM PDT

You can be sure that the device known as a standalone portable media player is slowly but surely going to get extinct, and the iPod touch from Apple can remain king of the hill for all I care, the market is shrinking. One very obvious reason? Smartphones are encroaching on this field, where better and superior technology does make your smartphone a more-than-decent portable media player, without having you for out more money for a separate device if you want to be entertained. Not only that, advancements in battery life technology also play their part, and yesterday, Motorola announced the new Motorola RAZR HD, which is deemed to be a multimedia powerhouse.

For starters, the new Motorola RAZR HD is said to deliver long-lasting battery performance for non-stop high definition entertainment. Thanks to its 4.7-inch HD display, your eyes will definitely appreciate what is deemed to be the "most compact smartphone in its class" which was specially designed to deliver up to 10 hours of movies and TV shows or 6 hours of surfing the Web on a single battery charge. Now this is a compelling and persuasive argument to make if you are in favor of the Motorola RAZR HD – we're talking about watching the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in one sitting, with some juice left to spare over.

Since mom always told us to see beyond looks, the Motorola RAZR HD is also a more than decent performer when the time calls for it to work. How about up to half a dozen hours of voice-guided turn by turn GPS navigation on a single charge? In addition, if you were to use the Motorola RAZR HD like a standard issue smartphone as you do yours right now, the battery ought to last you for a total of 24 hours at the very least, whereas I tend to find myself charging my device before I retire for the night as it is pleading for a power outlet by then each day after I return home from work.

You will be able to choose from sleek black or stand out white if you are interested in the Motorola RAZR HD. Pricing details have yet to be worked out, but it should arrive to consumers across the Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and Latin America soon. Folks living Stateside can get their hands on one before the holiday season.
