Jump Light uses your workout to power itself Posted: 13 Jan 2010 03:00 PM PST Those that enjoy working out do have their favorite way of doing just that. If that way is jumping rope, then this gadget would be an interesting addition to your household. This jump rope has an unexpected twist to make your life a little more eco-friendly. You can jump to your heart’s content and then you’ll have a little light after the sun goes down. It just uses all of that kinetic energy and puts it to good use. It even has a small screen to let you know how much battery life you’ve managed to give the flashlight. It also lets you know just how many times you’ve managed to jump over that rope. This was designed by Hyun Joo Lee and Eu Tteum Lee. Of course that does mean that this is still trapped in the concept stage. Hopefully sometime it’ll make its way into reality though. Puyocon ball-shaped interface device Posted: 13 Jan 2010 02:55 PM PST What you are seeing here is Puyocon, a ball-shaped device that could easily replace your mouse. Unlike your mouse, Puyocon isn’t dependent on rolling around on your desk to make your cursor move. On the contrary, Puyocon prefers to be picked up and rolled, squeezed, or even thrown to get your cursor to where it needs to go. The ball has fourteen pressure sensors in all, plus a three-way acceleration sensor. It can be synced to your computer via Bluetooth. Puyocon was developed by the Entertainment Computing Laboratory of Japan’s Tsukuba University. Apparently, they discovered that a young child’s method of squeezing things was a lot better use of an interface than a mouse or touchpad. You can check out the video after the jump, and decide for yourself if you feel that these guys are on to something. I say, if you’re going to have a ball interface, why not have two balls? With one ball controller in your left hand, and another in your right, you’ll have an amazing ability to juggle all sorts of projects. Yes, that was a terrible joke, but I think you see my point. A ball like the Puyocon that can interface with your computer is probably capable of a lot more inputs than a regular mouse, maybe even more than a gaming mouse. Now just imagine how much control a user could have with two mice. Perhaps this is the future that Puyocon is imagining, but we shall see. In the meantime, this ball doesn’t look like its for sale anytime soon. Lumisource introduces three new Boomchairs at CES 2010 Posted: 13 Jan 2010 02:28 PM PST Lumisource has been making some very sweet video game chairs with speakers for quite a while now, and they had three of their newest models on display at CES 2010. I will introduce them from left to right after the jump. Sky Lounger: “Game in Comfort” is the slogan of this oversized model. As you can see, the gamer or movie watcher is truly on his or her rocker with the Sky Lounger, and these rockers are made of chrome. The Sky Lounger features two 2-way spakers and powerful four inch subwoofer, and the volume and bass levels are controlled with a remote. (Measurements: 35 ” L x 26.5″ W x 40 ” H.) Admiral: Those that love the PC gaming world of MMOs or anything else should love the Admiral. It has an ergonomic design with an adjustable headrest for all your personal computing needs. It can also work for the television as well. It has two 2-way speakers aimed at the user for adjustable volume, base, headrest, tilt, and tension. (Measurements: 30 ” L x 32 ” W x 43 ” H.) Stealth: Check out the ground base on this bad boy! The Stealth has reinforced padded armrests and an adjustable headrest for a comfortable entertainment experience, be it video games or movies. It has two 3 inch 2-way speakers and a 4 inch subwoofer that promote some terrific sound, and you can adjust the swivel and tilt to whatever comfortable position you desire. By the way, the Stealth can be powered on 8 D cell batteries. (Measurements: 28 ” L X 28 ” W x 41 ” H.) At this present time, I don’t have a price point for either of these chairs, nor a release date. Look for them some time before the most anticipated games of the year will be released, though. Mitaki-Japan Wind-Up FM Weather Radio With Flashlight Posted: 13 Jan 2010 01:56 PM PST If you were to ever create an emergency kit for your car or within your home, this would be one affordable item you might want to throw in. It’ll allow for you to keep track of storms while you’re riding them out in a safe area. Since it is a wind-up device it makes it much easier on you. You won’t have to worry about keeping fresh batteries around for this gadget. It also comes with a built-in flashlight for when the power has gone out. I imagine it’s not the brightest light ever created, but it’ll likely do the trick fairly well in the event of an emergency. It also has a recharge jack so that you can power up your mobile devices. Out of the basic items there is an earphone jack as well as a wrist strap. To work the device one minute of winding will give you about 30 minutes of light, 10 minutes of radio time and 3 minutes of weather warning alerts. You can purchase it for $19.95 through Amazon. Commemorate Amber Alert Day with My Child ID Posted: 13 Jan 2010 01:55 PM PST The U.S. Department of Justice declared January 13 AMBER Alert Awareness Day two years ago, in commemoration of the abduction and murder of 9 year old Amber Hagerman in Arlington, TX. The purpose of National AMBER Alert Awareness day is to bring public awareness to the AMBER Alert program and to increase public participation in safely recovering missing children. As a parent, the idea of one of my children disappearing scares the living daylights out of me. However, there is a product out that can give, as it says, “Peace of Mind”. The little elephant that you see in the picture there is called My Child ID, and it is made by amberalert.com. My Child ID is a unique device that allows a parent to securely store, organize, and manage a child’s vital information. This includes medical information such as medications, allergies, and physicians, as well as emergency contact info as well. All the user has to do is plug it in to their USB port to set it up, and it is compatible with Microsoft, Mac, and Linux operating systems. My Child ID is a device that can fit on the end of a keychain, and allows family members to create several profiles that take up 128 MB. So in a situation where a missing child is found with this My Child ID, it will speed up the process of contacting the family taking taking care of any special medical needs. You should be able to pick up the My Child ID kit for about $39.99 on the Amber Alert site. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Posted: 13 Jan 2010 01:05 PM PST Managing your USB cables and every other cable you have lying around can make things interesting to say the least. If you need a way to keep your USB ports in one area, then this is probably one of the best ways to pull it off. It’ll hold itself onto your desk in the spot of your choosing and you can stop worrying about your hub falling behind your desk whenever you tug on the wrong cord. The hub will accommodate up to 7 of your various USB gadgets. Like pretty much all hubs that you’d purchase, it of course comes with a USB cable for you to hook the hub up to your computer with. It is just a hub, so the specifications are pretty generic. One of the larger perks about the hub is that you can adjust and fan out 5 of the hubs, which will help you plug in items that are a little bulky. You can purchase it for $14 through USB Brando. Posted: 13 Jan 2010 11:04 AM PST Some airports have a sign at the luggage collection area that informs passengers to double check on their suitcases before they bring it home since many of them look alike (just like babies at the incubator room), but here’s the Biometric Business Case that definitely confirms you’re the owner instead of bringing your case (pun not intended) to King Solomon to let him decide.
Sounds fine and dandy, but frequent travelers will most probably find this useful, and those who fall under that category certainly can’t be expected to remember to keep the battery juiced up, right? $1,100 is the asking price for the Biometric Business Case, and the main drawback would be its 90-day battery life that we feel should be able to last longer, but then again that would add to the total weight count. Seal Shield helps Wii fans keep their peripherals clean Posted: 13 Jan 2010 10:13 AM PST
Seal Shield rolled out a quartet of various bundles for a range of games including Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Resort and Wii racing games. These were specially designed with cleanliness in mind as you play the role of the resident gaming deity in your home (after all, cleanliness is next to godliness, no?). The kits are touted to provide you with the most complete, enhanced, multi player gaming experience for major Wii titles. Among the products within are antimicrobial silicone covers, machine washable boxing gloves, dishwasher safe tennis rackets, golf clubs, steering wheels, archery kits, Frisbees and swords among others. Seal Shield claims that their gaming products were created to help reduce the risk of worldwide cross contaminations with various bugs like H1N1, Norovirus and the “superbug,” MRSA making their rounds, but we’re pretty sure you wouldn’t invite a sick friend over to your place to have some Wii fun, eh? Seal Shield’s range of gaming products also merge SEAL SHIELD waterproof technology and SILVER SEAL technology for antimicrobial protection of the products, allowing you to chuck them into the diswasher once you’re done with your gaming session, and they last much longer as well since they’re resistant to mold, mildew and odor causing bacteria. Depending on the bundle you purchase, prices range from $29.99 to $49.99. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. MSI and Novell team up for U135 netbook Posted: 13 Jan 2010 09:44 AM PST MSI and Novell have come together to announce an upcoming netbook – the MSI U135 that will feature SUSE Moblin preloaded on it. This news comes shortly after the recent roll out of Moblin version 2.1, and it also marks the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that will retail a fully-supported Intel Atom processor-based netbook that has Moblin-based technology running to keep well informed consumers happy with yet another alternative to the Windos platform. The Moblin-powered MSI U135 was specially designed for both the consumer and the enterprise, where you will be able to experience a rich Internet journey with integrated e-mail, multimedia and Web browsing capabilities while you’re on the road. Thanks to the latest innovations from all the sweat and blood of the open source community, alongside technological innovations by Novell and Intel, the MSI U135 netbook is capable of offering virtually an all-day computing experience, bosating superior battery life and low power consumption integrated within. According to am Peddibhotla, Open Source Business Director, Intel Software and Services Group, “The Moblin project has the potential to become an accessible and widely used computing platform. We have worked closely with Novell in refining the current Moblin version 2.1 for the netbook. We are pleased to see companies like MSI and Novell embracing the technology, contributing to its development and bringing it fully-supported to customers.” No idea on when the MSI U135 that runs on SUSE Moblin will hit the general market, but it was on display at the MSI booth during the recently concluded CES 2010. It is touted to be the “most user-friendly Linux netbook option for consumers” at press time, and with netbooks continue to grow in terms of market share, we can more or less expect to see similar SUSE Moblin-powered netbooks in the future assuming demand for this particular MSI U135 model takes off in a grand manner. There is no word on pricing, but we do expect it to be a wee bit cheaper compared to the Windows-powered version since there is no license to pay for. Ritmo Advanced Pregnancy Sound System Posted: 13 Jan 2010 08:47 AM PST Nuvo Group USA recently announced their Ritmo Advanced Pregnancy Sound System that is touted to offer unparalleled quality and safe sound to prenatal listeners. While a baby’s still developing in the mother’s womb, Ritmo is able to offer a convenient, comfortable and safe way for families to share the sensory and emotional experience of bonding via the use of sound and music. Thanks to a 3.5mm audio port, you can hook up most portable audio devices such as iPods, portable media players, BlackBerrys and the like.
While research has pointed towards the introduction of reactive listening from 17 weeks of gestation onwards, other studies point towards positive development of the foetus with the right kind of music, including increased bonding and stress reduction. Ritmo furthers that theory with other means including dad reading his favorite book, siblings chatting with each other, grandparents belting out a lullaby or even having someone talk on the phone from far away. Once baby is delivered, Ritmo still has a shelf life as it has applications for the crib, stroller and toys coming right up. The Ritmo Advanced Pregnancy Sound System retails for $129.99 each.
