Facebook Clothing – Sort Of

As the year comes to an end and you focus on 2013 contemplate improving your self-worth. You know, join the gym and get fit. Start a book club for mental stimulation.  Plan a vacation to relax and get away. Get clothes that remind you how "liked" you are. Wha? Clothes that interact?

Some smart MIT students created Like-A-Hug, a wearable social media vest. As people Like your comments, status updates, photos or videos on Facebook the vest inflates and gives you a sort of hug. If you want to send love – or make that Like – back just squeeze the vest and deflate it. This concept clothing certainly won't cut out the need for human interaction.  But with social media taking up a larger portion of our lives it seems that some sort of physical feeling of support or encouragement could be a nice touch. Who knows what could be next. A glove that high fives?

What Santa Did Not Deliver

Do you ever wonder what the wish lists of the super-rich entail during the holidays? When have bank accounts like Bill Gates or Larry Ellison the world is pretty much yours, I'm sure.  Wired decided to look back on some of the year's most stupefying products in "Overhyped, Overpriced: 2012′s Insanely Expensive Gear." I'm guessing these are the things that Bill and Larry probably have on their lists.

The most expensive of the bunch is the $3 billion (yes billion) Rolls Royce 102EX Phantom. This is the electrical version of the Phantom released as a sort of litmus test as to the eco-friendly interests of Rolls aficionados. No, it didn't cost $3B to buy but to reportedly develop. Then the project was canned.

Other favorites on this Wired list include a $2 million prototype camera lens built for a Sheikh in Quatar and 8 foot tall, $250,000 concert speakers complete with 24 karat gold accents. That lens ought to produce some seriously good pictures. If those are to expensive just stick with the $100,000 two person submarine that allows you to jump and dive like a whale. Check out the other insanely expensive creations and see what things might have made it on the lists of the super wealthy.

ViSi Mobile monitor

When it comes to technology in the medical world, the realm of science fiction offers far more options and advancements than in real life for obvious reasons. Well, perhaps truth is about to catch up with fiction (with some miles left to go, of course) with the introduction of the ViSi Mobile monitor that will display the vital signs of a patient. The ViSi Mobile monitor is the brainchild of the good people over at Sotera Wireless of San Diego, California, where this wearable sensor pack will rely on tried-and-tested Wi-Fi technology, where it will enable doctors who get around with a tablet or smartphone in tow to be able to remotely monitor patient vital signs without sacrificing on accuracy, so much so it is said to offer the accuracy of an intensive care unit.

The ViSi Mobile monitor was designed around the concept of "monitoring in motion," where it is made up of several units that is made of rugged, water-resistant plastic. These will include a wrist unit with monitor readout, chest sensors, a blood pressure cuff monitor and a thumb sensor. All of those will be hooked up to the current hospital data infrastructure via Wi-Fi, where it works alongside WPA2 encryption for security.

The plethora of sensors made available will enable doctors to constantly monitor vitals such as blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, heart rate, electrocardiogram readings and skin temperature, being as accurate as that of an intensive care unit, while enabling patients to remain in ordinary hospital rooms or to have them move around. All readouts from the sensors are easily accessible from ViSi Mobile's wrist monitor's touchscreen, or you can take the desktop PC, tablet or smartphone routes. All of the wrist monitor's readouts are secured via authorization codes, meaning that it will remain off limits to the patient for obvious reasons.

Whoever said that the medical realm is not “gadgety” enough? Doctors seem to have a new “toy” to play with now on-the-go instead of their beeper that asks them to return to the hospital for an emergency.

Three Second Heater

For those of us living in the northern hemisphere, most of us are still in the thick of winter, meaning we have to don our gloves each time we go out, and for some of us, shoveling oodles of snow from the sidewalk each morning just so that we can back the car out of the garage and onto the road. Well, things indoors might be far cozier, but you would also need some sort of heating system in place as well unless you want to freeze your butt off. There are dime a dozen heaters out there in the market, but you might want to consider what the $99.95 Three Second Heater offers by basis of its name.

Assuming all goes as claimed, the Three Second Heater will perceptibly raise the temperature of a particular within a mere three seconds thanks to its infrared heating element. Tests performed by The Hammacher Schlemmer Institute claimed that this heater’s 1500-watt halogen element is capable of raising the temperature nearby by 1.3ยบ F almost immediately, while the standard issue quartz models do take nearly an entire minute to warm up. Being different from traditional heating elements, infrared heat will warm the surrounding area in a similar manner that sunlight warms your skin on a sunny day, without drying out the air or lose energy to leaky ductwork. There is an oscillating fan that ensures the heat will be distributed evenly, whereas a pair of heat settings and an adjustable thermostat let users fine-tune comfort levels accordingly.
