the Solar Suitcase – Saving Lives Overnight Posted: 22 Mar 2012 10:00 AM PDT So many of us take for granted some of the most common things in our lives. We rely on our medical system when we are sick. We have plenty of clean and amply equipped hospitals where we can give birth, or be made well. What if we didn’t have any of those things? What if you, or someone you loved had an emergency and the nearest hospital didn’t even have electricity. Yes, places like that still exist, and people are dying there. Check out the WE CARE Solar Suitcase, originally designed to offer timely emergency obstetric care in areas with few resources and no reliable sources of electricity ( where women were commonly losing their lives during childbirth), the Solar Suitcase is a portable power unit that provides health care workers in any situation with highly efficient medical lighting and power for phones, computers and other essential medical devices. Of course, by equipping these off-grid medical clinics with this useful solar power, these clinics can now offer appropriate emergency care, and not only for expectant moms, these devices can substantially improve overall mortality and morbidity rates and the quality of care for so many people living in regions where folks have long been without proper services. The system costs only around $1500 to produce and includes high-efficiency LED medical task lighting, a universal cell phone charger, a battery charger for AAA or AA batteries, and outlets for 12V DC devices. The basic system comes with 40 or 80 watts of solar panels, and a 12 amp-hour sealed lead-acid battery with an expansion kit available for utilizing larger batteries. Tiwi – Better than a Nagging Mom Posted: 22 Mar 2012 08:51 AM PDT There are few things that strike terror in my heart as quickly and deeply as the thought that someday, sooner than I would like to admit, my little girl will be driving a car. Its hard to imagine the kid, who still cant get milk directly into the cereal bowl, will be out and on the open road. Joking aside, its an awesome thought, one made more ominous by the never ending news reports of teenagers making deadly mistakes while they are still learning to drive. I’d like to introduce you to Tiwi, who may very well be your teens next best driving companion. Tiwi mounts to the vehicles windshield or dashboard and monitors acceleration, braking, speed limits and driving patterns. Tiwi then analyzes the data and in real time, verbally assists your teen driver, by telling them to slow down, buckle up or to stop driving so aggressively. Tiwi provides parents with alerts and notifications via text messages, emails or a phone call. The benefits of the Tiwi don’t stop there. Tiwi offers a Street-by Street option that like a GPS, recognizes posted speed limits for certain roads, but the Tiwi takes things a step further by recognizing the speed of the teen’s vehicle. The makers of the Tiwi don’t look at their device as just a monitor, they believe that Tiwi is actually a mentor, and will assist teens in becoming better drivers. Parents can decide on which features they want to activate, such as how many miles per hour above the speed limit you will allow your teen to drive, (or even on a certain grace period for infractions) pick which zones or destinations will send you an alert when your teen arrives at, or leaves, and set the sensitivity of the aggressive driving parameters. Interesting technology, but I am beginning to wonder, how much is too much when it comes to keeping tabs on our kids? The unit can be purchased at tiwi.com and with a 12 month contract costs around $300 with a $24.95 monthly service fee. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Separation Anxiety Preventing Pet Bed Posted: 22 Mar 2012 06:00 AM PDT Separation anxiety is one of the symptoms that closely connected dogs have with their owners, and the degree of behavior problems that results from that varies, depending on the severity. Google Street View now explores the Amazon Posted: 22 Mar 2012 05:00 AM PDT The Google Street View team has certainly done their part in mapping around major portions of the streets around the world, and there has been some pretty zany images to look at in the past. Having said that, I am just waiting for Google’s Street View team to head off into space, although getting their orientations right might take some time. Well, this time around, they have not traveled that far – at least not into the outer reaches of space, but rather, a handful of members of the Brazil and U.S. Street View and Google Earth Outreach teams were invited to the Amazon Basin in order to collect ground-level images of the rivers, forest and communities that are located in the Rio Negro Reserve. I could have sworn that I saw an Angry Bird in some parts of the rainforest featured, but then again, it might have just been my overactive imagination. World Forest Day has come and past, hence the images captured have been uploaded and are now available to the masses via the Street View feature on Google Maps. No longer do you need to book a flight to South America if you want to check out the natural beauty and diversity of the Amazon with your own eyes. Hey, it is better than nothing, right? You are able to take a virtual boat ride down the main section of the Rio Negro, or choose to float up into the smaller tributaries where the forest is flooded, without having to slap on an entire tube of mosquito repellent. How about strolling along the paths of Tumbira, the largest community in the Reserve? Not only that, you are able to visit some of the other communities who have invited the Google Street View team into recording their lives and cultures. This project would have been impossible if it were not for the partnership with the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS), which is actually a local nonprofit conservation organization. The Street View trike was good to go even in such challenging environments, while the tripod camera with a fisheye lens saw action, capturing the beauty of the natural landscape and the local communities. Over 50,000 still photos were stitched together as a result of this mammoth effort, resulting in immersive, 360-degree panoramic views. Since many areas of the Amazon such as the Rio Negro Reserve remain under the protection of the Brazilian government, with the public having restricted access, so this might be the closest you will ever get to the rainforest in real life, in that part of the world. USB flash drive resembles hard drive Posted: 22 Mar 2012 05:00 AM PDT Now this is definitely a hoot – a USB flash drive that was specially manufactured to have it resemble – visually at least, a hard drive. Yes sir, who does not want something this cute in the first place? It will be a definite conversation starter, never mind the fact that it will never come close to offering the kind of storage capacities that hard drives deliver. Taiwanese firm InfoThink is behind the design of this rather ingenious computer peripheral, but we are not too pleased to see it come with just USB 2.0 connectivity. One would have thought that by now, we would have been able to see USB 3.0 connectivity being the norm, whether as ports on most home computers as well as peripherals in the industry. I guess I am wrong in this aspect – USB 2.0 still holds quite the sway across the general populace, and USB 2.0 it is with this 8GB USB flash drive. Perhaps not surprisingly, this InfoThink product actually ran out of stock over at Amazon.com as a testament to its popularity, and Amazon themselves do not know just when the product will be back in stock. I guess when the next round of stock arrives, it would definitely sell out within a short time as well. It would make a perfect collector’s item, delivering read speeds of up to 25MB/s and write speeds of up to 12MB/s, clearly placing this USB flash drive under the average category. There is a bright blue LED activity indicator that lets you know whether it is plugged in or not, and if data on it is being read. To make sure you do not suffer from the first world problem of a lost USB cap, this mini hard drive USB flash drive comes with a retractable USB connector, ensuring it is a cinch to hook up to a desktop and stash away once you are done. Measuring 1.4″ x 1.0″ x 0.3″, it might be a wee bit too thick to have a couple of these plugged into your notebook simultaneously side by side, but that does not mean it is any less portable anyways. You will have to fork out around $21.99 for one of these puppies, so keep your fingers crossed that Amazon will be able to receive new stock in due time – the sooner, the better, I say.
