Cisco wants you to save money with Digi-Piggy

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 06:59 AM PST

With the economy not being at its best at the moment, it makes perfect sense if you were to do your best to save up wherever and whenever you can, and Cisco has stepped in to help you do just that with their very own coin collector and counter known as the Digi-Piggy. Yup, this is no porcelain porker that needs to be thrown onto the ground or struck with a hammer in order to get to the goodies inside when you need a little bit extra dough at that moment in time.

The pig’s snout itself will feature an innovative digital readout, where Digi-Piggy is alert enough to count all American coins while making sure that a running total is kept, regardless of the order or the value of the coins inserted. Sounds like the perfect tool for little ones to start learning on the value of money as well as instilling such a discipline in their lives.

Of course, college students might also pick up a Digi-Piggy for themselves since it is the perfect fodder for those who pay plenty of visits to the nearest Laundromat or are a huge fan of vending machines that require coins. Of course, those who frequent arcades or have to feed parking meters on a regular basis would do well to bring home the Digi-Piggy.

So far, we do know that Cisco intends for the Digi-Piggy to hit the market sometime in the third quarter of the year, where it will be available via major chains including Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond and others. Made out of highly-durable plastic, the Digi-Piggy is destined for longevity, functionality and safety. Accessing your savings is a snap with its twist-off lid, and too bad we do not know just how much something like this will cost just yet. As long as it helps us save money, we guess, and hopefully the Return On Investment will happen sooner rather than later.

My Review of the Sewell HD Deck USB to HDMI Adapter

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 11:13 PM PST

Some of you might remember when we reviewed the Aluratek AUH100F USB to HDMI 720p Adapter. I received another adapter recently from Sewell called the HD Deck that is also a USB to HDTV adapter, and found it quite similar.

I’ll go ahead and start with the similarities. The Sewell HD Deck is a small box that can be connected to a computer and then an HDTV so what is on the PC is now on the screen.

I was never able to get the screen to be a perfect match, and I think it has to do with resolution on both. I was able to have my TV set Mirror my PC screen, or make it a secondary monitor. By the way, the HDMI to HDMI cable is not included. I’ll get to the differences between the Aluratek and Sewell devices after the jump.

The Aluratek was able to go to 720p, but the Sewell model goes up to 1080p. I seem to remember that the AUH100 had to be plugged into the wall, but the Sewell model had a power cord that required another free USB port. That was quite helpful, actually.

I cannot understand why the HDdeck does not appear on the Sewell website, but I believe it is costs about $99.95.

Harrier Jet for sale on eBay bought by 7-year-old, but no sale

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 10:39 PM PST

Have you ever wanted to get yourself your very own VTOL (Vertical Take-Off Landing) plane? Apparently, there was an EX RAF 4 Harrier jet on sale on eBay.

I’m just going to assume that any guns or missiles had to be removed, and I won’t get into the legalities of what it would probably take to actually own and fly one of these. The price was $113,000 for the Buy-It-Now rate, which was irresistible to a seven-year-old in London.

As you can imagine, the boy’s parents would not let him have a Harrier. (I honestly don’t know any parents who would except for Richie Rich.) The father made a call to Jet Art Aviation Limited, the company that posted the jet, and explained the situation. It sounds like that company understood and retracted the bid without too much hassle.

I can’t help but think of a similar case involving Pepsi Stuff back in 1996. Pepsi showed an ad where a young boy has earned certain normal items like a T-shirt, leather jacket, and sunglasses with Pepsi Points. The end of the commercial showed the boy flying to school in a harrier jet, which is subtitled “7,000,000 Pepsi points”.

Well, someone actually found a way to earn 7 million Pepsi Points, and took Pepsi to court over it. It was not ruled in the plaintiff’s favor, and no jet was ever given away.

Jacksonville Giant Yo-Yo was a Fiasco

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 09:25 PM PST

I don’t know about you, but I think it is always ambitious when someone tries to break a world record, no matter how silly it may seem.

In the case of a couple in Jacksonville, their attempt at breaking the record for the largest operating yo-yo did not succeed.

The gigantic yo-yo was about 15-feet wide, weighed in at 7,300 pounds, and had to be hauled up with a crane to a height of 120 feet. In order to break the record, the yo-yo has to go up and down three times. How many times did it go for this Ohio couple? It busted off on the first time it dropped.

That is a shame, because it took a year and a half to built the yo-yo, and then it had to be rebuilt when some people in Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba, Michigan broke the current giant yo-yo record with a 11 foot, 6-inch yo-yo.

But does this stop this Ohio couple? Yeah, the crane alone cost $500 to rent. They are apparently giving up on this whole giant yo-yo thing. According to my source, the couple is planning on making the world’s largest skateboard. I swear that I did not make that last part up.
