Disney’s Star Tours closing, but will be back! Posted: 17 May 2010 04:50 PM PDT I remember back in 1987, I had a chance to go on Star Tours at Disneyland. I had to wait almost two hours, and it was quite an experience. I would imagine that after twenty years, the effects of Star Tours would look pretty mediocre in the era of CG effects. It would appear that Disney feels the same way as they are planning on giving Star Tours an update. This means that Star Tours is going to be temporarily shut down. The one in Disneyland will shut down on July 27th, and the one in Disneyworld will begin its end on September 8th. Disney has shared that by the time the ride will be rebuilt in May 2011, it will have a 3D screen. I have no idea if the users will have to wear glasses, as I know that we have the technology to make glasses free 3D, especially if it is the same clip played every time. I also heard that it will feature…podracing? Oh no, we are getting into Star Wars prequel territory here. I remember when I visited Star Tours, there was a droid that was the host and pilot of the thing. I found out later that it was Pee-Wee Herman doing the voice. I sort of hope they get rid of him this time. Maybe they just replaced him with Jar Jar Binks. Oh please, no! Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. TIM (Time is Money) clock shows you how much money is wasted at your business meetings Posted: 17 May 2010 04:26 PM PDT Back when I used to work for “The Man”, office meetings were the best and worst thing to happen to me. Since I was paid by the hour, I only had to sit and listen. However, these meetings would often keep me from my duties. If only I had the TIM or Time is Money Clock. It really is a simply device that makes a calculation that can easily be done on a calculator, but this will get everyone’s attention. Essentially, it takes the number of people of the room multiplied by the average hourly wage, and then the clock begins to tick. It will show how much money is being spent as the meeting drags on. Of course, as long as there are businesses, there will probably always be meetings. I believe that originally the purpose was to create synergy amongst employees so the little bit of time used will go a long way. At least, that was what they originally used for. I suppose what this clock is supposed to inspire is that time is money. Like the one classic Far Side cartoon, where Einstein discovers that “time is actually money”. You can get the TIM for about $24.99 at TIM website. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Japanese wedding officiated by a robot “I-Fairy” Posted: 17 May 2010 03:59 PM PDT Whenever you get married, you have to plan a lot of things. One of them is who is going to officiate at the wedding. This one couple in Tokyo decided to opt for a robot to officiate, and there is a video of “I-Fairy” in action after the jump. The I-Fairy is made by a Japanese company Kokoro. The bride, Satoko Inoue, works for Kokoro, and groom Tomoshiro Shibato is a professor of robotics at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology. The I-Fairy is remote controlled by one of the attendants at the 50-guest wedding. It does talk, and has 18 joints in its arms. Some of you might find this a little creepy. I would have to say: “just wait”. I believe that once robots start doing other sacraments of the church, such as confessionals, last rites, and baptisms, then we can say whether or not we’ve gone too far. So, is this the beginning of some new era of robot-officiated weddings? I suppose that they really need to have these in Vegas. Maybe they could be coin-operated. Well, if you want to see this officiate at your wedding or someone that you know, just pay about $68,000 to the Kokoro company. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Posted: 17 May 2010 02:06 PM PDT If you liked the old iMac monitors then you’ll love this speaker stand. It looks a whole lot like the stand those monitors used to sit on. It’s a quirky design and in some ways a little bit unnecessary, but if you’re a little nostalgic about your iMac then it’s a good way to keep it on your mind. Plus it plays your music out loud. This does come through Chinavasion, which always makes me at least pause to wonder how great the quality is on the devices they sell. They are a great way to get gadgets that those of us in the US might not have normally been able to purchase though. The docking station has a 12W audio output and can accommodate either an iPod or an iPhone. You can purchase it for $41.07. Mickey Mouse Head discharges static Posted: 17 May 2010 01:21 PM PDT In the winter I’m notorious for getting shocked on any and all nearby metal objects as well as shocking most people I come in contact with. I had no idea that it could build up so bad that you can actually visibly see the spark. Thankfully there are static dischargers to save the chronically staticy from regularly receiving small shocks. This Mickey Head is a very cute way to make your life a whole lot less shocking. Plus you get to see it working. When you touch it the light bulb flashes to show that it’s discharging the static electricity. It’s attached to a keychain to make sure that you can keep it nearby you at all times. To pick one up it’ll cost you $18 through Brando. Source: CraziestGadgets Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Recycled iPod Turned Into Clock Posted: 17 May 2010 12:33 PM PDT We have all went to grab for our favorite electronic only to receive that sinking feeling that something has gone terribly wrong with it. I have that problem with my iPod at the moment and if it turns out not to be fixable then I would hope to find something like this clock to make sure that it stays usable even after its prime has passed. Sure, this is an incredibly dorky way to check the time, but at least it temporarily keeps one electronic from rotting away in the local dump. The iPod has had a clock inserted into it that uses a USA made quartz drive movement. The whole thing measures 2.5" wide by 6.5" tall. In order to keep it up and running you’ll just need one simple AA battery. Also if you should want something of yours turned into a clock, you can always contact them to work out a deal. This particular device will cost you $39 through Etsy. Source: GeekyGadgets Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Sony unveils NEX-5 and NEX-3 digital cameras that boast compact interchangeable lens technology Posted: 17 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT
These models are proud to be the first interchangeable lens cameras with an APS-C sensor in the world that is able to continuously adjust focus and exposure while recording video. As for the NEX-5 camera, this puppy will offer Full HD movie capture (1080i AVCHD and 720p MP4) with Full HD 60i recording – now how about that? Apart from that, these cameras are size perfect when it comes to fulfilling the needs of point-and-shoot users who want to capture better images than their current level of skill ever can, while it also lets existing DSLR users bring around a no-compromise compact alternative – of course, purists would argue that nothing can beat DSLRs for their size, weight (for added stability) and performance, but we must admit that the gap is being bridged slowly but surely. Being totally different from conventional DSLR models, the mirrorless construction of the NEX-5 and NEX-3 will see a reduction in the thickness of both camera bodies to just about an inch at their slimmest point (after you exclude grip and mount portions of course). The NEX-5 is made out of magnesium alloy, while the NEX-3 comes with a polycarbonate casing alongside a newly developed 14.2 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. Both the NEX-5 and NEX-3 are also the first cameras to offer the extra convenience of high definition video recording, and will also boast Sweep Panorama. Basically, this means capturing large group shots is a a snap, involving press-and-sweep to capture breathtaking shots up to 226-degree horizontal or 151-degree vertical shots. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras will retail for around $650 and $550, respectively when it hits the markets later this year. After all, it offers far superior hardware compared to the Google Nexus One which was dubbed a superphone by the Big G themselves, so why not check out the hardware specifications right after the jump before taking the plunge? If you are interested in placing a pre-order, you can do so by picking up a $50 RadioShack gift card that can be applied toward the purchase price of the device, while scheduling an appointment to pick up and activate the device. The HTC EVO 4G is ready to hit participating stores throughout North America from June 4th onwards. Before you pick it up however, you can further enhance your first-hand engagement at select RadioShack stores nationwide that are deemed to be “HTC EVO 4G experience centers,” which specially trained experts will demonstrate features and benefits on a live HTC EVO 4G handset. Guess this goes down well with Google’s assertion that it will stop selling its Nexus One online anymore simply because the average Joe still prefers to touch and “fondle” their smartphone(s) before coming to a justifiable purchase decision. Are you looking forward to the EVO 4G? Introducing Foolish Gadgets because not all gadgets are cool [ RadioShack ready to rock and roll with HTC EVO 4G copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] Related Posts: |
Microsoft puts stake in future with Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 Posted: 16 May 2010 05:23 PM PDT Microsoft aims to pave the way of software’s future with the worldwide availability of Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010, not to mention the availability of Microsoft Visio 2010 and Microsoft Project 2010 that will target business customers worldwide. With over 90 million businesses being able to deploy the 2010 suite of products, Microsoft hopes that their customers will be able to check out significant productivity gains alongside greater return on their software investments. If you happen to own a business, how about considering an upgrade? Of course, it will cost you some assuming you run a rather large company, but check out the benefits after a jump and let us know of your decision in the comments afterwards. Apparently, a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting, “The Total Economic Impact of Implementing Microsoft’s Integrated Office Productivity Platform,” sometime this month, evaluated the 2010 releases of Office, SharePoint, Exchange and Office Communications Server 2007 R2. With a quartet of fundamental elements including costs, benefits to the entire organization, flexibility and risk being employed, it seems that the Return On Investment for a composite organization was found to be 301% with a payback period of 7.4 months after deployment. It also pointed to the fact that said composite organization would see more than $13 million in savings over a three-year period and on average (guess that depends on just how much access to Facebook your employees get), a savings of over two work weeks annually – now how about that! The new suite of products are touted to offer a familiar productivity experience across a variety of platforms including the PC, phone and browser, where Office 2010 and related products are more than capable of delivering new capabilities to help people hook up and collaborate with co-authoring in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft OneNote, boasts advanced e-mail management and calendaring capabilities in Microsoft Outlook, not to mention the addition of the new Microsoft Outlook Social Connector that offers communication history and social network feeds directly into Outlook. You will now be able to work virtually anywhere with Microsoft Office Web Apps, which is actually cloud computing from Microsoft being the online companions to Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and OneNote. Sounds like it couldn’t come too soon, eh? Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy.
