iPod-like Mini Spy Camera Camcorder

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 02:41 PM PST

spywebcam2

This may look like yet another dorky iPod knock off that will never look as good as the original, but it has an extra angle.  This fake iPod doesn’t play any music, instead it spies on everyone around you.  Sure, it’s less than subtle when there’s a hole right in the center of what looks like it should be a screen, but if the people you’re spying on are complete morons you’ll be just fine.

This spy camera has a whole lot of ways to set it up and make it look even more dorky.  You can mount it on the wall with the included 360-degree stand or set it on the table using that same stand.  You can also get a few extra style points by wearing it around your neck.  It requires a Micro SD/SDHC memory card to store all of your video or images within.  It can capture film at 25 frames per second, has a color video resolution of 640 by 480 pixels and an image resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels.  It also has built-in audio and a rechargeable Li-ion battery.  You can purchase it for $39 or get a 8GB card with it and pay $66 total.

Air New Zealand is redefining coach in a comfortable way

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 02:40 PM PST

250-skycouchWhile I was traveling to Las Vegas for CES 2010, I couldn’t help but compare modern-day air travel with the holocaust. I mean, the way people get shuffled into airplanes is similar to the Jews being stuffed into boxcars. The only difference is that the passengers are allowed to sit down.

I could go on about how I can’t get out of my seat if I’m sitting by the window, and can’t get to the bathroom with that drink cart going down the aisle, but that really is the job of stand-up comedians.

You really don’t need me to tell you how uncomfortable modern-day travel is. However, this newly outfitted 777 by Air New Zealand could make air travel the “friendly skies” once again. This coach cabin (that’s right, this is coach) has 11 rows of seats that can fold into skycouches, creating a convenient bed for two.

Granted, you aren’t going to want to sleep in this fold-out bed with a complete stranger, but couples who book their flight can get a rebate on that third seat. This could definitely make the flight very relaxing and somewhat romantic for couples, but I wouldn’t suggest this as a method for joining the mile-high club.

The plan is also to make these section equipped with power sockets, USB ports, and even iPod connectors. Man, I could easily live on a plane with this accommodation!

Smart Fish’s Conceptual one-man plane

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 02:13 PM PST

Design_28_1_600x345-thumb-550x258-32659Now where have I seen this new concept plane from Smart Fish before? Oh yes, the very first Spy Kids movie!

Remember the scene when Carmen and Juni steal this special plane from their uncle Machete in order to rescue their parents at Floop’s castle? The plane even has the same type of bulky jet engine on the front.

Perhaps the designers at Smart Fish liked the idea of a small plane with this aerodynamic shape that can serve as a one-man flyer. I really hope that Disney does not bring a lawsuit against Smart Fish. That could hinder Smart Fish’s plans to license the tech to the aerospace industry. Smart Fish also wants to do wind tunnel testing as well as an actual flying scale model. If this jet ever does get made, it is planned to have a large range of 3100 miles and fast speed of Mach 0.85.

Hopefully they will have solved the problem of landing gear. I can see how a wheel could be retracted in each of the wings, but I don’t see how a front wheel could be retracted with that bulky engine there. In other words, good luck trying to do three-point landings with this guy.

So, are we looking at a Jetsons-like future where the skies will be full of these one-man aircrafts? Man, I hope so. I mean, if you can’t give me a flying car, then at least give me this.

Look out, board game makers, this is the future

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:49 PM PST

We’ve covered the intersection of computers and board games with the Scope augmented reality game and Dungeons and Dragons played on the Surface, and this video shows a new development.

This one uses those hexagonal tiles that you can find in games like the popular Settlers of Catan. The way it works is not with e-ink or Microsoft Surface technology, but a projector and camera mounted above the plain white hexagonal tiles themselves.

The video shows some very cool applications for strategy games. You can see a player push two tiles together, and one army advances from the pushed tile into the other tile.

What is very cool is the “pouring” feature which is what happens when a player tilts a tile upward. This causes one image to decant into the other, but it is even better in a game. For example, when an image of a boat goes into port, the player “pours” the troops off the ship and onto the dock. It is crazy how cool it is. Watch the video for more cool features.

Man, I don’t even like “bored” games, but I would definitely play them if they had tech like this. Traditional board game had better change with the times if they expect to sell their Monopoly or Risk. Then again, I’m not certain whether the computer and video gaming industry has affected these old-school games.

KeyChain USB Emergency DC Battery Charger

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:22 PM PST

charger

Should you ever run into a situation where you are in dire need of your camera, this USB device could come to your rescue.  When your camera battery is dead you may be able to just plug it in and charge it up again.  However, for those times that you just happen to not have the charger around this battery charger can fix things up again.  Since it’s just a keychain, as long as you have your keys on you the device will be nearby at all times.

The little green charger can be plugged into your USB port and then attached to the battery of your camera.  You will also get the choice to include an AC adapter in the deal, but that will of course cost you a little extra.  It’s supposed to work with most brands of DC Lithium batteries.  It may work a little better with a smaller camera though than it would a DSLR one.  You can purchase just the charger for $11.90 and then if you want both the charger and the adapter it will all together cost $14.90.  You can pick one up through Gadget Brando.

LG Serie 1 Retro TV

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 03:57 PM PST

lg_retro_tv_crt_serie_1

Televisions aren’t usually interesting enough to turn a whole lot of heads. Sure, everyone drools over that expensive flat panel TV that’s twice the size of your current one, but they’re pretty much all black and shiny.  LG is bringing out a very retro new TV that’s definitely a breath of fresh air if you’re tired of the same old black framed televisions.

Sure, this is going back a little in the times, but sometimes it’s nice to go back to the old.  Especially since at times it feels as if anything remotely new is looking a bit generic.  This isn’t actually a TV where new technology is concealed inside of an old frame.  It’s really an old fashioned 4:3 aspect ratio cathode ray tube.  The 14-inch screen may not be new technology but at least it looks a bit newer.  Plus some people swear that old games just look better on the older televisions.  These LG Serie 1 TVs are retailing for about $216 in Korea.
