Sirius SPB1 Sporster Boombox

Satellite radio can be a beautiful thing, especially for those long trips.  Except wouldn’t it be nice if you could use satellite radio in more areas of your life?  Well now Sirius has a radio that you can carry around all sorts of places.  Giving you your favorite satellite stations outside of your car.  Of course if you’re in the mood for something besides satellite radio, this has other functions as well.

In order to work this you’ll need to plug the Sporster SPR1 into the boombox’s cradle.  In addition to the satellite radio, it has a removable antenna that can be stashed in a built-in compartment.  If you want to hook up an MP3 player, you can just connect it through the 3.5mm AUX input jack.  The 5 watt amp boombox has 4-inch stereo speakers and a handle that can pop up when needed.  You can purchase the boombox for $69.99.

Light Beam Coffee Table changes colors

I don’t know about anyone else, but my coffee table doesn’t do a single thing.  It just sits there and usually attracts a whole lot of clutter.  It’s amazing the things that end up on my coffee table.  Most coffee tables out there don’t have a single electronic function, they just hold things.  Well this Light Beam Coffee Table is packed full of LED lights to give you an interesting light show.

There are no videos of the table in action, but it does change colors.  They also don’t mention if you choose how quickly it changes or if it just slowly cycles through them all on its own.  The table is made of reclaimed teak and was actually inspired by railway sleepers.  It was created by a Netherlands designer, Egbert Pos.  As of right now it doesn’t appear that these are up for sale anywhere.

Sony Cyber-Shot gets a makeover

The Sony Cyber-Shot is by no means a new camera.  It’s already available for $200 in the US, but Sony Japan has just announced that they will be releasing much prettier versions of the camera.  This time they’re trying to get a few more women to pick up the camera.  Instead of grays, they are adding a little more color and a whole lot more style to the camera.

The new version of the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W530D will come in Jewel Pink and Precious White.  The cameras have gotten pretty designs as well as some crystals added to them.  They’ll also get a pretty little pouch that matches the style of the camera.  As far as the camera itself goes, it is a 14.1 MP camera.  It comes with things like a 4x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD screen, a smile shutter function, face detection and 720 HD movie recording function.  It also has the basics like a 2.0 USB port and an SD/SDHC card slot.  These are supposed to be released in Japan only on April the 23rd for about $290.

NEC PaPeRo serves as a check-out robot

I’m not certain if we are all looking forward to or dreading the day when all the “menial laborers” of the world, such as checkout clerks, will be replaced by robots.

After all, my Safeway has four self-checkout stands. This PaPeRo robot is essentially designed to be a friendly presence at a self-checkout.

There is a video here so you can see it in action, and this robot teddy bear serves to instruct the buyer to scan and pay. By the way, it uses NEC’s Twinpos E-Money Self-Checkout System, which I am assuming is how this person in the video paid with their cellular phone. I can’t pay for anything at my local grocers with a cell phone as yet.

The NEC PaPeRo was recently shown off at RetailTech Japan 2010, and it is not available to purchase as yet. However, you can rent a PaPeRo R500 for a three-year contract.

Something tells me that becoming a clerk is not going to be a secure job. I suppose it’s about stable as working for a newspaper. I also suppose that we are all doing tasks that will eventually be made obsolete thanks to developments in technology. I hope that didn’t come across as too negative, as I realize that starts the fear of being replaced by a robot.

Honestly, I welcome new technology that makes our work easier, as it usually opens of the door for doing more work.

Community Transit: Probably the most private system of public transportation

Designer Dave Owsen’s concept for mass-transit is one that allows for privacy for its travelers, which is something that most public transportation systems shun.

How many times have you ever ridden a bus or subway, only to be annoyed by a loud-mouthed passenger or bothered by misbehaving children? Community Transit, as it is called, is made so that every passenger or select group of passengers have a private car.

I guess it’s probably too much to call them private, as these things have a big transparent screen so you can be seen quite clearly by those outside. However, the space inside is enough for parents to travel in without having to worry about their children bothering anyone. As someone who has kids, I’m familiar with the “don’t bother me” stares given by those who don’t enjoy childish behavior on a bus or train.

Yes, the Community Transit will allow families to travel together privately, like in a car or taxi, at a lesser price, conceivably. Apparently, there is a planned touchscreen so the rider can select their location, but destinations are rather limited, given this monorail/gondola track system.

Perhaps they can make it so it can join up with other tracks, and still have enough “buckets” underneath so that everyone has a way to travel. I don’t know what the would-be rider would do if the Community Transit was too crowded, though.

Hands on Review of the Nyko Charge Base IC

When I saw Nyko at CES 2010, their big products was the Wand+ and the Charge Base Quad IC.

Nyko recently gave me a chance to try out the Charge Base IC, and I was pretty impressed with it. This isn’t the first time that I used a device to charge Wiimotes, but this one has some interesting features.

The first and most prominent feature is “high end induction technology” that allows charging via magnets. The user simply puts his or her Wiimote on the Charge Base IC and it stays there with a tight magnetic seal. I can honestly say that this is the greatest “ooo” feature of this product.

This seal allows the charger to charge with silcone sleeves and WiiMotion Plus adapters on it, which is something most Wiimote chargers don’t allow.

When the Wiimote is fully charged, the light in the background will change color from blue to green. After that, it is good for about 10 hours of playtime.

Other cool features include an extra USB port for charging USB rechargeable devices such as iPods. It also has an outlet with pass-through port so it doesn’t take up any outlet space.

You should be able to go to the Nyko site and get the Charge Base IC for about $34.99. I believe that the Charge Base Quad IC is available for $49.99. That’s about $15 more, and can do twice as much. I’ll let you decide whether this is a good deal.
