Walkable roller coaster is literally a work of art

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 07:30 AM PST

Some of you might remember when we reported on the exciting Japanese Sky Cycle roller coaster that is pedal-powered. This roller coaster in Duisburg, Germany, is one that you can walk on.

You might wonder how someone can possibly go through the loop without magnetic boots, and there is a reason for that. This is more of an art exhibit than it is an amusement park attraction.

The walkable roller coaster, also known as “Crouching Tiger and Turtle, Magic Mountain”, is created by sculptors Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth. It is designed to encourage visitors to experience twists and turns and see the world from different points of view. Since it is made of zinc and steel, it is also an homage to the local steel manufacturing company Krupp Mannesmann.

In case you are wondering, the loop is not passable. Yes, this means that you have to either stop your walking roller coaster tour at whatever direction you enter it from. My Source does not say whether or not you have to enter it from one particular place.

A ticket to this particular ride or exhibit costs about $2.30 (1.7 Euros), and I hope that it is worth it. There seems to be quite a line to this, so it must be pretty popular.

Vertical Chess Set designed for long games

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 07:15 AM PST

I don’t know about you, but something like this just screams “gift item” to me, and I don’t even know anyone who is really into chess. Perhaps it is just Black Friday getting to me.

Yes, this Vertical Chess Set is even cooler than those Tri-level chess sets that you used to see on Star Trek, the original series. As you can see, it takes chess off the table and onto the wall, with a nicely decorated frame as an added plus.

This comes in handy for situations when extended games are played. Now you don’t have to worry about someone stumbling and knocking over your pieces, as each one is on safely on the picture frame on eight transparent acrylic shelves.

As for the board, it is made of cherry veneer. The black pieces are made from rosewood and the white pieces are from boxwood.

You might not be able to tell from the picture, but the Vertical Chess Set has a “last move” marker. For those who are master strategists and carry on games for weeks or even months, their world is about to get a lot more interesting.

You should be able to pick this Vertical Chess Set on the Hammacher Schlemmer site for a price of $299.99.

Displair allows for images to be displayed and manipulated on a fogscreen

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 07:00 AM PST

I probably should be talking about what deals are going down on Black Friday, but honestly, there are just way too many doorbusters. I would rather take some time on the day after Thanksgiving covering some cool new technology like the Displair.

The Displair is essentially a projected display that shines on a “curtain of cold fog” instead of a wall. Not only that, the user can interact with the images like enlarging and shrinking with hand gestures that are picked up with an infrared camera.

You can watch a video after the jump to see how it works, and you can see that it is quite similar to a Kinect. It is designed by Maxim Kamanin, and he plans to create displays as large as 140 inches for advertising, home entertainment, or even in the field of medicine.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a report on conceptual technology without a Minority Report reference, and this Displair is similar to the scene where Tom Cruise looks at videos of his lost son and ex-wife.

So, is it possible that we could have a Displair in every house? Well, that depends. Do you really want a fog machine creating a curtain in your house?

Emulator DJ comes in different sizes

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 05:30 AM PST

You might be a really nimble DJ with your fingers dancing all across the console to send the crowd at the party wild with your brand of music, but here is the Emulator DJ that will intend to have you be seen by the adoring masses. OK, so that might be a wee bit too farfetched, but if you want to add a slice of visual action to your music mixing abilities, then you might want to consider the Emulator DJ. Coming in three sizes – 32″, 42″ and 46″ which will retail for £4,300, £4,700 and £5,600, respectively, this is a massive see-through touchscreen mixing desk that is guaranteed to turn heads at any party.

Carrying just about anything and everything that a DJ would need or ask for on a touch-sensitive table, the Emulator DJ will comprise of toughened glass so that it won’t crack all too easily under the weight of expectations by the crowd, where you craft your mix, throw in your fair share of effects, cue new tunes as well as come up with new ones on the spot. The advanced multitouch software will also allow you to fade between tracks with but a single hand, letting you use the other to churn out effects.
