Stevens Institute of Technology actually makes a product called SkyNET

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 11:27 AM PDT

In case you doubt the headline, let me reassure you that it is true. Stevens Institute of Technology actually made a product call SkyNET.

Have we learned nothing from the Terminator movie series? I can see why we didn’t learn from the last two Terminator movies, because there wasn’t much to learn from them that wasn’t already said in the first two films. Do you really want to create robots that can fly around like in those killer-robot films, and then name them after the evil corporation that is in these films?

The SkyNET isn’t made with big guns, but this a Linux box, which uses a Parrot A.R. Drone for flight. It is designed to fly within the range of a wireless network and electronically attack it. In other words, this thing is like the annoying moth flying around your home, and jamming you. I am told from my Source that it is difficult to trace.

Just picture the scene in the movie where the hacker is being hacked by a better hacker. He doesn’t know what is happening, and he has tried everything. Then he goes outside to see if someone is tampering with him externally. He then sees the SkyNET, hovering, but it is too late. The cops are already there.

Yeah, you’ve seen a movie like that. Hopefully, there won’t be a scene where the flying robots really come down on the rest of humanity.

The Tornado-proof home can go underground

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 10:43 AM PDT

Considering all the tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, that continue to destroy homes, these architects at 10 Design in Hong Kong have come up with a way to protect a home with a simple yet elegant solution: tuck the house into the ground.

The house has a set of hydraulic levers that are activated by high-velocity winds that can pull the house into the ground to safety. Once the house is underground, the roof locks to make it water and wind proof.

I have to admit that I like the aesthetic of the design, as it is very futurist. I’m not certain how much space it has, but I have to admire its shape. It kind of looks like a boat, doesn’t it? I’m not certain that is a good sign. Perhaps this thing should cast off in case of a flood.

Ted Givens, a design partner at 10 Design, apparently has a vision of communities wired up with sensors and can process weather data to tuck away the home in case of an emergency. You can check out a video at the Source link.

In other words, entire communities will have to be restructured to keep this working. By the way, the outer skin of these homes is clear insulation in between two layers of Kevlar. This is part of the high cost of protection against natural disasters.

Fisher Price presents the Laugh & Learn Apptivity case

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 10:07 AM PDT

I know that my four-year-old son loves to play with our iPhone, but his slimy hands are not the ones I want holding an iDevice. Griffin made a product known as the Woogie that can protect the iPod/iPhone from baby damage, and now Fisher-Price has entered this niche market with the Laugh & Learn Apptivity case.

The case puts the phone in one of those baby toys that have the rings for decoration and play. There is a protector film that keeps the slime and drool out.

That is a lot like the Woogie, without the softness. What also makes it different from the Woogie is that that the home button is protected. This insures that the little tyke can’t access things on the iDevice that he or she is not supposed to.

Fisher-Price also has some apps to go along with this accessory. With the Laugh & Learn Apptivity and an app like Let’s Count Animals, the baby will be quite entertained and cannot get out of the app without the help of Mom and Dad. The iDevice is also locked in an cannot be taken off unless the baby has a key or a coin.

You should be able to get the Laugh and Learn Apptivity case in October for about $15. I suppose the ages are four and under for a device like this, but do iDevices have an age limit on them? Should they?

Doctor Who Desktop Dalek

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Fans of the Doctor Who series will definitely be pleased to have all things Doctor Who around them, including the work desk if possible. After all, who isn’t scared of these feared machines? Imagine having a Dalek patroller who faithfully reports for duty each and every single day, whether you turn up at the office or not. It will feature ground sensors that help it avoid falling off the corporate “cliff”, and actually chiprs “Exterminate!” with plenty of zest whenever it makes a turn.

Of course, the $34.99 Doctor Who Desktop Dalek will run on a trio of AAA batteries, so make sure you have some rechargeables handy at all times if you want to make sure no one comes near your cubicle and start making a mess of it. With all the turning around and shouting, it might get irritating after a while – leading your irate colleague to literally exterminate it by tossing it into the nearby bin. If only it had the spunk of R2-D2 to fight back with an electric cattle prod thingamajic…

Max Force Shadowhawk 100

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Think that you have it in you to be a sharpshooter from a distance? Then you might want to see just what the £39.99 Max Force Shadowhawk 100 is able to offer – it is capable of firing similar soft paper ammo as its smaller sibling, the Max Force Maximiser 60, although this two-handed weapon is far more potent as it delivers the punch for you to immerse yourself in long-range target practice. All you need to do is moisten the bullet-shaped paper ammo, load it into the ammo clip and you’re good to go – the advanced power piston technology is capable of sending the bullet to a target that stands a 100 feet away!

Of course, I am quite sure you cannot curve a bullet the way it happens in the movie Wanted no matter how many times you practice, but if you are going to live out your fantasies of being the top sniper in the world, then the Max Force Shadowhawk 100 seems to be a good place to start. Since your ‘bullets’ are made out of paper, they’re indoor friendly – until you hit your no-nonsense relative who thinks that adults should not be running around with a toy like this.

Heck, if you want to get in on the action even more, the Shadowhawk ships with a fold-down bi-pod so that you can lay low and track your target before letting fly that killer paper bullet.

Ballistic Lifestyle offers rugged protection for your iPhone 4

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT

I must say that Apple’s darn good at marketing, not to mention boasting devices that deliver industrial design par excellence – and in order to make sure that your recent new purchase from the bowels of Cupertino remain in pristine condition for as long as possible, there is the vast world of third party accessories, ranging from the extremely common screen protectors to the quintessential case protector. Well, Ballistic knows that your treasure your shiny iPhone 4 a whole lot, which is why they decided to roll out the Ballistic Lifestyle case.

This particular case is slated to be the latest in rugged protection for Apple’s best selling smartphone to date, where it first tested the waters at CES 2011 to a roar of approval, and I am glad to say that it is finally ready to rock and roll amongst the iPhone 4 toting masses.

The Ballistic Lifestyle looks set to be a trendsetter where durable cases are concerned, where it will merge an ultra-sleek form factor without sacrificing or compromising on what it originally set out to do – which is to deliver maximum protection. Constructed from strong TPU material and silicone Ballistic Corners, you can be sure that dropping this on a concrete floor is not going to break your heart – chances are, you would just shrug it off.

The interchangeable corner bumpers are definitely a unique idea by itself, where it was conjured by the research folks over at Ballistic to have different thickness options for various situations. This means you can always opt to customize the amount of shock absorption, and surely if you’re attending a black tie event where the venue will be fully carpeted, you can always strut in with minimal shock protection since the carpet flooring would definitely help absorb most of the impact upon a drop.

Interested in bringing home the Ballistic Lifestyle? It costs a mere $29.99 in translucent smoke and translucent blue, where each purchase will come with a single set of standard black bumpers and one set of large red bumpers for additional protection.

Marchon3D debuts new 3D eyewear collection

Posted: 12 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT

The recently concluded IFA 2011 in Berlin, Germany, certainly brought about plenty of excitement what with cool new tablets being introduced. Well, it seems that the stereoscopic 3D action is far from over, and you might even say that it is just starting – as Marchon3D decided to introduce their new 3D eyewear collection in that part of the world. Known as the EX3D glasses, these will arrive in the UK first followed by most of the other European countries sometime this month.

The EX3D collection is said to rely on patented M3D technology from Marchon3D, where it will allow three-dimensional images to be reproduced via curved lenses in high definition glory for your personal enjoyment. This also means that you are able to move around and turn your head freely while wearing the glasses, without experiencing any headache inducing distortion. To top it all off, you will definitely look far from geeky unlike the first generation 3D glasses that you wore in cinemas, as plenty of thought and heart had went into the design of each pair of EX3D glasses. Not only do you enjoy an unprecedented degree of comfort, but also 100% UV protection.

To make sure that there is a little bit of something for everyone, the EX3D collection will comprise of 25 different models that will target kids, ladies as well as men – and it will be compatible with all standard passive 3D technologies. Guess another plus point of relying on passive 3D technologies would be not having to juice up your 3D glasses once you’re done with the show, unlike active shutter models.

Among the other features of the EX3D glasses include curved, patented glasses reproduce 3D images in high resolution and with extremely high contrast and minimize deviations caused by light, distortion and clouding. It is claimed that images at the edge of the glasses are also razor sharp. These glasses will be impact-resistant (to a reasonable degree, but don’t abuse it on purpose and it should serve you well for a long time), where it boasts a special hardened coating that delivers protection against unwanted scratches.

Not only that, those obsessed with certification will be pleased to know that all models in the EX3D collection will be certified according to both RealD and MasterImage. They retail for 25 GBP for glasses with plastic frames, doubling that amount for glasses with metal frames.
