The TreadWheel, for a Dogs Workout, Hamster-style!

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 11:26 AM PST

So, did you ever have a hamster? or a gerbil perhaps? I mean, it was a the quintessential childhood experience. Ah the smell of the cedar bedding, his little water bottle hanging on the side of the cage and the obligatory wheel. Gosh you could watch that little critter run on that thing for hours. I always wondered what Snufkins was thinking as he kept running, never getting anywhere. I feel like that sometimes, I guess it wasn’t too bad for a rodent, but what about mans best friend?

Let me introduce you to the TreadWheel, straight from the hamster cage to your living room, the TreadWheel comes in a few different sizes enabling you to exercise your beloved canine companion (from Chihuahua to Shepherd) right in the privacy of your very own home. No more dreaded walks to the park in the rain, no need to even be home, your little buddy can jump on the wheel anytime he chooses and run to his hearts content, at any pace he desires.

The Wheel is pooch powered and made of stainless steel, it includes a training door and has a special cushioned running mat for extra comfort. It appears as though its easy to clean, relatively stable and the larger size also comes with special resistence settings to enable tension control and even more exercise for your pet.

So there you have it, the first product that lets you exercise your dog right from the comfort of your couch. Now If I could just get this thing to generate electricity… hey, there’s an idea. Starting at around $475, its certainly a terrific conversation starter. Don’t miss the video.

RingStix – a Stab at Something New

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 09:33 AM PST

Did you ever wonder why some games come and go, and other games last a lifetime? What is it that takes an old classic like the Frisbee and turns it into a toy that everyone knows, and everyone still plays. Do you ever go to the beach even in this day and age and not see someone with a Frisbee. What makes a toy or a game special like that?

Could this be the next Frisbee? Welcome RingStix. Played alone or with friends using 2 curved, (very sword-like) 25 inch sticks and a 5 inch ring. The player, placing a stick in each hand and the ring over both sticks crossed at the center, players simply open their arms wide (and quickly) in order to propel the spinning ring toward the other player. That other player then uses the point of one or both of the sticks to catch the flying ring and sends it back again in the same manner. The faster and harder a player flares the sticks, the farther the ring will fly, sometimes up to 50 yards, even in strong winds.

The makers of RingStix say that “This new and unique sport offers an entertaining new form of exercise, improves agility and hand-eye coordination, and gets kids and adults off the couch and away from sedentary technologies like computers, TV and video games.” I have to admit that it really does look like fun.

RingStix can be used in yards, parks, at the beach and more. The patent-pending RingStix product line is made of very durable material that meets all U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. And guess what? Both the sticks and the rings float and one ring even glows in the dark adding a fun twist for night time play.

RingStix start at around $19.99 for the standard game and the Pro set sells for $29.99 and incudes specially molded grips and a carrying bag. Both are available online at: amazon.com

Archos Child Pad targets the little ones

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 05:30 AM PST

Like father, like son, or so the saying goes. Most young parents would have most probably gone through this particular conversation with their little ones – as to why daddy and/or mummy can carry an iPad and an iPhone, but little Jeremy cannot. The reason is simple – how can a little kid know about good stewardship? Surely there will be mistakes along the way, and replacing a broken iPad is definitely an expensive mistake to make. Not only that, most tablets do come with adult-centric apps (obviously), with very little (or no) attention being paid to apps and programs that appeal to kids.

Well, Archos sees this particular niche and has decided to step up the game by announcing the Archos Child Pad. This 7″ tablet will run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, and is said to deliver a safe, fun, full tablet experience – all for just $129 a pop.

The Archos Child Pad will come in a compact and lightweight design, running on a 1GHz processor and boasting 1GB of RAM. It will arrive at international markets at the end of this month, and Henri Crohas, Founder and CEO of Archos has this to say, "As a pioneer in the portable audio and Android tablet market we realize the importance of providing a tablet that can offer hours of entertainment for all ages, especially kids. ARCHOS strives to offer great tablets with only the best of features at affordable prices and we expect this tablet to bring a smile to the faces of kids and parents' everywhere."

Some of the kid friendly features of the Child Pad will include access to the Kids App Store that is powered by AppsLib, where 14-friendly categories and 10,000 apps including games, entertainment, communication, multimedia, books, comics, and sports among others are on offer. That ought to keep little Jeremy more than occupied for a long time. Not only that, Archos ensures the entire user experience is kid-friendly, sporting colored icons, home screen folders with direct access to games, entertainment, learning and puzzles as well as the top 28 kids' apps pre-loaded including Angry Birds, Pig Rush and Flight Frenzy.

Wacom Intuos5 tablet

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 05:00 AM PST

Tablets are dime a dozen these days, and with the iPad 3 being prepared to roll out this coming March 7th in San Francisco, you know for sure that there will definitely be queues when the time comes for the iPad 3 to be released to the masses. After all, it is the next best thing since sliced bread (or at least that is what a $500 billion company wants you to believe), but spare a thought for tablets of a different variety – now I do not mean those from the Android-powered camp, but rather, a digitizer tablet.

Yes sir, you know how all these pretty looking webcomics are done up these days? Well, a digitizer tablet certainly plays a role in the lives of such digital artists, and Wacom, being an old hand in this niche market, has taken it upon themselves to deliver the Wacom Intuos5 digitizer tablet that will target professional photographers, designers and artists who have every intention of bringing their digital content creation to the next level.

Obviously, being new, it will come with a bunch of spanking new features such as multi-touch gesture support for intuitive input, an Express View display to facilitate an efficient workflow and wireless capabilities for your convenience and comfort. When you merge that Wacom’s renowned pen pressure and tilt sensitive pen, you can be sure that the state-of-the-art Intuos5 is more than capable of inspiring creativity via an immersive experience.

Boasting an ergonomic, ambidextrous design alongside and bold new look, the Intuos5 takes on a slim-profile that lets you work in complete comfort. Since designers and artistic types themselves do place a premium in terms of aesthetics, the Intuos5 does not disappoint, boasting a professional matte-black, soft-touch finish and illuminated accents that reflect a modern and durable design. One is able to select from small, medium and large sizes in order to accommodate various creative preferences. Obviously, the pricing structure will be different for each size, but we will come to that later on.

Wireless connectivity is not an issue with the Intuos5, as Wacom allows you to make the conversion via the Wireless Accessory kit that is sold separately on Wacom’s e-store. This kit comprises a rechargeable battery which will juice up via USB, a RF module that plugs into the tablet and a receiver that plugs into a USB port on the computer. Expect the Intuos5 touch Small, Medium and Large to retail for $229.95, $349.95 and $469.95.

Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano

Posted: 02 Mar 2012 04:00 AM PST

Here is a way to play the piano like a boss – the Japanese way, of course. After all, who wants to lug around a really huge and heavy piano, and a keyboard is a poor substitute when it comes to the actual warm sound of a piano? Enter the $39.99 Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano to save the day – this new musical instrument hails from the Land of the Rising Sun, and all you need to do is slip it on your wrist, coax your fingers into the tiny enclosures (which will comfortably cover your fingertips), and you are good to go.

Just how do you play it though? Individual finger bits will play a note when you press it on a hard surface, and when you add a trio of buttons/notes to the top of the wrist unit, you end up with an entire octave of fun. There are three volume levels and a trio of sound banks. The latter, its sound banks, are what makes the entire Japanese Wrist-Mounted Finger Piano really special. You are able to play piano (sound 1) or bells (sound 2), as well as the third sound – cat. Who wants to play cats all the night through?
