A Virtual Archer's Dream

Games become more virtual by the day, wouldn't you agree? Every gaming system and game designer is out to get users more immersed in the entire experience. And yet how much time do we spend gaming on phones – which will never be able to fully immerse us. Or will they?

Bow Active Gaming wants to change our smartphone game-playing experience. Their BowBlade device, recently shown at MacWorld, proves to revolutionize iOS and Android games. Over 35 apps currently involve target shooting or sniper based themes that are enabled with BowBlade – a life sized replication of a bow.  Simply pop your phone into the holder and use this archery accessory to really simulate the process of shooting a bow. Set your game up, rotate the bow to move direction – just as you would with your phone in your hands. Then pull the trigger at your finger to fire a arrow (ok, it is actually a stylus tip) onto your screen.   Construction enables a true taught feel when drawing the bow too, so you will feel like Robin Hood or Katniss or your favorite arching character. That's not all BowBlade does either. For game systems folks, connect to Wii (with upcoming Nintendo mount) and planned PlayStation and Xbox games. And yes, BowBlade's tension also enables it to be used as a strength training device. All of this will be available later this Spring starting at $145 for the gaming option or $185 for gaming plus exercise blades. Pre-order on their website and get ready to rock out your archery games like never before.

Liven Up Your Coffee Time

Ever have one of those conference calls that drags on…and on…and on? You sit listlessly listening to others drone on about a topic that does not involve you. Those are great. Or maybe you have the 7am meetings when your eyes are barely awake. Coffee is a must.  If only you had something to play with to kill the time maybe the meeting would go faster.

Now you do have a device to make time fly during those dull moments: the Build-On Brick Mug, $19.99 at ThinkGeek. This 12 ounce hot drink holder will save the day. Use your own bricks from any compatible collection (LEGO™,Mega Bloks, PixelBlocks, KRE-O, K'NEX Bricks™) and keep your creative juices flowing, while being able to keep the java flowing. Put some wheels on it to make it mobile. Make your Martian walk vertically down the side. Whatever you choose. Change it up on a whim. Not to worry, BPA-free plastic makes the Build-On Brick Mug safe. Hand wash it though. You wouldn’t want your connectors to get as bent out of shape as your boss may be when you use it. One thing is for sure you will never be seen as dull or bored with this drinking jug.

Track Your Miles, Save Your Body

If you are not a runner then you have one in your life. You know, the ones that won't let any weather, work or personal obligations get between them and their daily miles. I have never seen such passion for a pastime! From the newbies to the experienced veterans, I am sure that millions of miles are globally logged each week by runners. For most there exists one device they cannot live without – their shoes. Shoes work to protect runner's feet, knees and hips from the constant pounding of the pavement/trail/track. But shoes do wear out. Runners must rotate their shoes on a regular basis  - usually every 400-600 miles – to ensure maximum shock absorption. Most runners take pride in their watch used to track the miles, yet those watches don't offer continuous tracking of the miles on the shoes.

MilestonePod looks to be a runner's next best friend, preceded only by the shoes. This $14.95 gadget, available at milestonepod.com, continuously tallies miles run in a pair of shoes. After initial setup (via USB & computer) clip the 10 gram pod to a shoe. It keeps track of your foot position and produces mile measurements which you can easily read on the display, even while moving. When it is time for new shoes simply unclip the pod, reset it and reclip it on another pair. You can change the battery too, so you will never run up miles without counting them. Another great feature of the MilestonePod is completed during setup. Connect the pod via built-in USB to a computer. After registering you will be able to enter your vital records, including allergies, blood type or health conditions that emergency personnel should know. All the information can be viewed by connecting the pod. The device is not meant to replace more advanced watches, but supplement the runners knowledge. If you, or someone you know, needs to keep a constant tally of miles run then rely on the MilestonePod. Your knees and feet will thank you.

Charge with Body Heat

Think about how much power our bodies generate. We are truly machines, constantly taking in energy and burning or storing it for future use. We rely on electronic devices for so many parts of our life, all of which have to be plugged into a power source. It seems logical that we should be able to harness the energy in our body and funnel it towards electrical uses. Many have tried and it finally looks like someone succeeded in making an efficient device to do exactly that.

Fujifilm recently revealed a high-efficiency Thermoelectric Converter in a flexible film format. The thought is the substance attaches to our skin and immediately begins producing electricity from the heat you give off.  Fujifilm's particular polymer can be manufactured via printer too, which enables virtually any size or shape film. Solar power could be added to the film to enable even more charging.  Imagine running low on phone power, applying this film, plugging into the phone and letting your body heat charge your device. OK, maybe that is far off. Medical devices would probably be the first to experience this au-natural charging product. Live demonstrations of the product are occurring at trade shows so hopefully some manufacturers will take note. And maybe someday our body heat will charge our lives.

Terrarium Desk lightens the mood

I am quite sure that folks who live in a tropical country, where it is basically summer all year long, would not be able to identify with the kind of depressing fog descend on one's mind, body and soul when winter arrives, and the day is shortened considerably. In fact, if one were to remain indoors all day long, working and hacking away on a computer keyboard, that kind of condition will also run the risk of annoying issues arising, especially during the aforementioned winter months. Bear in mind that the lack of sunlight as well as absence of nature will result in a naturally depressing effect, and while it is not possible to work on your notebook in the freezing cold by the lake, how about bringing the "outdoors", indoors? This is just what Daniel Zeller thinks the doctor ordered, hence coming up with his Terrarium Desk.

The Terrarium Desk is the brainchild of Zeller, as it stemmed from his love for green products as well as his proclaimed desire to “green up my apartment.” After reading his fair share of creative content online while gaining inspiration from the creative efforts of other folks over on Pinterest, Zeller finally gained the relevant boost to come up with the Terrarium Desk. Zeller's day job is a mobile app developer in Norway who spends plenty of hours at his desk, and this has fueled his determination to add some greenery to his working environment.

Apart from using regular, locally-sourced wood which was artificially aged using “a combination of a blowtorch, steel scrape and wood stain,” the Terrarium Desk comes with a tabletop made from tempered glass, and drawers on each side are made from regular cut glass. Within the Terrarium Desk lies plants like Hedrea Helix, Campulana Portenschlagiana, and other Ikea-sourced greenery. Watering is done once a month or so, making this an extremely easy piece of furniture to upkeep. It seems as though it is going to remain a personal piece of furniture, as Zeller is not ready to commercialize this idea just yet.

Ematic FunTab adds more zest to tablet range

The world of tablets is largely broken down into two categories where dominant operating systems are concerned – iOS and Android, although Microsoft did try to disrupt the dance between the two with their Microsoft Surface Pro machine that runs on Windows 8. Well, you know that with Apple's iPad family, there are not too many models to choose from, but when you take into consideration just what Android has on offer, making a decision is highly challenging. Like, nearly impossible to make a good decision if you do not have the time to go through lengthy reviews and to do the right amount of research. Well, Ematic, one of the manufacturers who have churned out tablets for the budget minded for some time already without sacrificing on performance, has come up with their FunTab.

Just what does the Ematic FunTab deliver right out of the box? For starters, it will come preloaded with Zoodles, which is an advanced, parent monitoring platform that will help safeguard children's online activities. Zoodles basically enables parents to pick and choose between their child's browsing and downloading options. Heck, they can even login to Zoodles.com in order to check out all of their child's content from an online database, now how about that? It does not matter if we are talking about drawings or video messages, or even educational, progress reports will be broken down by subjects learned, as Zoodles intends to bring both parents and children closer together.

As for the kind of hardware that you will find packed in the Ematic FunTab, we are looking at Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running right out of the box with Kids Mode turned on, a 7" 800×480 capacitive multi-touch display, a 1.2GHz processor with an accompanying 400MHz GPU, 512MB RAM, a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes, two cameras – one in front and another at the back, and the Ematic Kids App Mall among others. Would you fork out $99 for this puppy?

Electromagnetic Shielding Laptop Tray

The number of wireless devices have been growing almost exponentially over the years, and while research has been done to reassure consumers that these wireless devices will not emit harmful waves or energy which has been speculated to cause cancer, one can never be too sure still. After all, it is not as though we have half a century's worth of data to study and make a definite conclusion, right? So, for folks who want to err on the side of caution, the $49.95 Electromagnetic Shielding Laptop Tray does make plenty of sense, as this lap tray is said to protect laptop users from electromagnetic energy as well as heat emitted by wireless devices.

The Electromagnetic Shielding Laptop Tray will be different from standard laptop trays which merely disperse heat, as it boasts of a lightweight stand that has a metal surface, and will also block 99% of the Wi-Fi radiation emitted by a laptop, helping mitigate what a select bunch of medical researchers believe could very well be a potential health risk. A pair of quiet fans that are powered by connecting the stand’s retractable USB cord to a laptop’s port will make sure your laptop remains nice and cool during use. Thick bottom padding helps cushion the stand against the user’s thighs, and there is an ergonomic wedge design which positions wrists at an angle for comfortable typing.

Quiet Pro gets "World's Quietest Mechanical Keyboard" mention

If you are a single person living on your own, then you would have realized long ago that you are pretty much able to do whatever you want, without having to worry about someone else out there who have a different viewpoint from you. Well, there is a downside to it all, too, as having someone else journey with you through life makes it all the more colorful and interesting. When it comes to working late into the night, singles would not have an issue with the light turned on, but if you have your partner in bed with you, then things get a little bit more complicated. Lighting issues are one thing, the sound from your keyboard is another. The $149.99 Quiet Pro keyboard from Thinkgeek might help you solve half of your problems, where it has gained the moniker of being the "world's quietest mechanical keyboard".

The Quiet Pro keyboard comes with sculpted keys that are laser etched, and lives up to its name, being super quiet and deadly accurate. Not only that, it remains true to the times with a trio of USB ports in addition to audio and media controls thrown into the mix. Those who have won speed typing competitions before would be more than pleased to notice that you will no longer suffer from "ghosting" issues with the Quiet Pro keyboard. With a cable length of 6 feet, the Quiet Pro does seem to be the ideal workplace companion, especially if you love and appreciate peace and quiet in the vicinity.
