Holy iBattz BattStation Tough Pro, Batman!

Sure, you love spending the day at conventions and tradeshows like CES, but there are moments when you realize that it totally slipped your mind the day earlier to power up your smartphone, leaving you with less than 25% to go through the day. Which is nigh impossible considering what a power user you are. Good thing there are peripherals out there to the rescue, such as the iBattz BattStation Tough Pro 12,000 mAH. Yes sir, this bad boy will come in 7200mAh, 8400mAh and 12000mAh configurations, retailing for $29.90, $39.90 and $49.90, respectively.

Still, the tale of the tape needs to be told, and the iBattz BattStation Tough Pro 12000 comes with, no prizes for guessing this one, 12000 mAH of portable power. With this, you can juice up a couple of exhausted USB devices simultaneously, and it holds enough charge to power an iPhone up to 8 times, or for tablet users, the new iPad with Retina display once. Fret not about its durability, the BattStation Tough Pro gets the job done just about anywhere, thanks to its ruggedized, silicone shell that is drop and water resistant.

Boogie Board Jot 4.5 LCD eWriter

For those of us who are office drones and cubicle slaves, surely you are familiar with the concept of a notepad? No, I am not referring to the simple text editor stashed away under a nest of menus in older versions of Windows, but rather, the traditional paper kind. Yes sir, those useful pieces of paper that lets you jot down important information on the spot. Well, perhaps it is time to bring things up to speed in the 21st century with the Boogie Board Jot 4.5 LCD eWriter that has just been announced at CES 2013.

It is rather unfortunate that the Boogie Board Jot 4.5 LCD eWriter will arrive in the market only in this coming holiday season, which is at the end of the year in case you are stuck in a time warp. The Boogie Board Jot 4.5 LCD eWriter is quite a looker, considering how it sports a compact and durable design that makes it ideal for writing quick memos and reminders on-the-go. Small and lightweight, it should not be an issue to find a pocket or purse to fit it in a jiffy. It comes with an attachable tapered stylus and stackable design for a truly unique user experience, while a plastic, removable cover helps protect the writing surface from unwanted marks and scratches.

Canon imageFORMULA P-208 Scan-tini personal scanner

I don't know about you, but I certainly did not grow up with a scanner being a constant peripheral right beside my desktop machine, although I would have loved to own one considering the amount of doodles that I made which should have been immortalized instead of being thrown out of the house by my mom as part of her annual spring cleaning habit. Well, now that I'm all grown up and working, the idea of owning a scanner ain't half bad at all, and unlike the bulkier (and far noisier!) scanners of old, it is nice to see Canon cater to the modern market with their imageFORMULA P-208 Scan-tini personal scanner.

The spanking new imageFORMULA P-208 Scan-tini personal scanner is said to be able to quickly handle a variety of documents, where they will include receipts, business cards, photographs, bills and contracts, making life a snap when it comes to managing and organizing personal documents or a small or mobile office. These documents will then be converted into digital information which is easily searched, not to mention stored, and shared.

Not only that, when you hook up the Canon imageFORMULA P-208 Scan-tini personal scanner to the optional WU10 Wireless Adapter & Battery Pack, you end up with enhanced connectivity, as you can now send scanned files wirelessly to a range of compatible devices and operating systems. Basically, this recently introduced adapter will play nice with Windows and Mac environments when it is jiving with the P-208 scanner.

Road warriors will definitely appreciate the diminutive size of this P208, considering how it measures a mere 2-inches wide, making it extremely slim to carry around, where you can also opt to stash it away discreetly at home or at the office even when you are running low on space. Boasting a speed of up to 8 pages-per-minute, you can pick up the imageFORMULA P-208 Scan-tini personal document scanner later this month for $229 a pop.

Huawei Ascend W1 arrives at CES 2013

Things are all abuzz on the CES showfloor, as there are tons and tons of gizmos to choose from, but you certainly cannot fault the presence of Huawei as they have their fair share of interesting devices to check out as well. Case in point, the Huawei Ascend W1 that has just been announced, which is the first Windows Phone 8 device from the Chinese manufacturer. Just what kind of performance and specifications that comes packed with the Huawei Ascend W1? For starters, it will come in a body that measures 10.15mm thin – not the thinnest kid on the block by far, but it should not bulk up your pocket too much, either.

Apart from the 4-inch IPS LCD 480 x 800 touchscreen display with OGS Technology, the Huawei Ascend W1 will also be powered by the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8230 dual-core 1.2GHz processor and Adreno 305 GPU. There is a 1,950 mAh battery to keep it going for the entire day, and Huawei boasts of 470 hours of standby time, although we would like to put that claim to the test as most figures on paper rarely live up, let alone surpass, real world usage and performance.

Since it runs on Microsoft's most recent mobile operating system version, the Huawei Ascend W1 will come with the Windows Phone 8 Start screen that allows you to customize and pin Live Tiles with topics of personal interest, providing real-time updates that are truly yours and yours alone. Not only that, there is a dynamic lock screen which enables you to select the photos or updates that are most important to you and have them ready at a glance, never mind that the device is locked. Useful for those who love to take a sneak peek, no?

No idea no pricing just yet, but the Huawei Ascend W1 is said to hit China and Russia from this month onwards, while Western Europe, Middle East, USA and other selected countries will follow soon.

"Slow Down" Says Your Fork

The health and fitness gadget category has exploded in the last year. With innovations like the FitBit and Nike Fuel, tracking your daily activity becomes easier and easier. One of the toughest parts of using these gadgets is the ongoing quest of managing your diet and food intake. If there were only a dietitian that could follow us all around and track food, remind us when to eat, tell us to slow down when eating. Sort of like having a parent with us at all times.

Time to get "HAPI" with a potentially meal-altering product from HAPILABS . The HAPIfork, 2013 CES Innovation Award nominee in the Health and Fitness category, wants to help you eat – literally! This digital utensil contains circuitry to monitor motion, like taking food from plate to mouth, and tinming of meals. It monitors the number of "fork servings" taken per minute and per meal and the duration of each "fork interval". Meaning that your fork can tell you if you are eating too fast. If so you will get a subtle vibration reminding you to slow down. Eating slower encourages better digestion and frankly, makes you feel better after the meal. We have all over-served ourselves at one time. Imagine if you had a friend in hand to slow you down so your body could actually tell you when you were full? Handy, eh? HAPIfork can also track the length and times of your meals. Information from the fork uploads to your personalized HAPI dashboard online. HAPIfork launches this spring for an estimated $99.  Combined with other HAPI devices like the HAPItrack activity tracker HAPILABS hopes to enhance our sense of well-being and therefore improve health.

Magnetic iPhone Friend

iPhones have really set the bar for smartphones. Those of us that have them certainly appreciate MOST of the technology. But that darn keyboard still creates issues. Without tactile reminders of where our fingers are or what we touch our fat fingers and typing speed give ample job security for the spell check programmers.

Someone finally got smart though and found a sleek and discreet way to provide an iPhone keyboard and game controller while not bulking up the device. Check out the EX Hybrid, built for iPhone 5 and available for $59.90 at iPhone5mod. You get a case and two magnetic attachments to make your phone more comfortable to type or game. Pop your phone into the case. Then sync the magnetic qwerty keyboard or game controller via Bluetooth and let it cling to the case in portrait or landscape mode. When done simply pop the aluminum board on the back of the case, where it won't interfere with your camera. Both attachments – each just 2mm – can stick to the phone and won't add bulk. And either attachment can serve as a screen cover too. Be aware that the game controller is limited to working with iCade games. And the keyboard and controller each need a 1 hour charge but will get you 40 hours of use. The video below gives perfect examples of how simple the EX Hybrid is to use. If fat fingers and fast typing inhibit your keyboarding or if you prefer more space to see and play your iCade games then this magnetic solution should meet your needs.
