Get the Groceries Right!

Some of the most successful products evolve strictly out of making our lives easier. We could survive without it, but in our continuing efforts to save time or hassle the product takes off. Think about it. Who thought bagged lettuce would ever succeed? Or the universal remote control? Well, there's another product on the horizon that may just will do the same thing.

Currently on Kickstarter is hiku, a grocery list creation and reminder tool. What makes it so different? It involves a separate device – meaning smart phones need not be present to submit an item to the list – and it uses the cloud. hiku is smaller than a computer mouse and can live on the counter or the fridge. Simply designed, it enables users to make notes to themselves about groceries they need in two ways: by scanning the UPC code or making a voice memo. Simple right? Not so fast. hiku then sends your reminders, via the cloud, to your hiku account. You can then access the information via hiku app or any web browser. That means any member of the house can submit requests and know that the shopper will get the message. hiku will be open, for integration with other list programs like Remember the Milk, Astrid Tasks and Evernote. Funding is in progress, and you can support hiku for as little as $2. Assuming funds are raised, launch is anticipated in early 2013.

So if simplify grocery shopping and end the days of running out of your favorite stuff by helping hiku become a reality!

Thanks: FastCoDesign

Yet sometimes protection is not enough for practical, hands free uses of the phone. Ever try watching a video while propping it up on something? Or how about using the GPS on your phone but having it flying around the front seat. The phone is definitely protected – but sure does not stay in place.

Welcome to itFits™, the smarter smartphone accessory as their maker, itFitsYourLife states. itFits, a pliant gadget flexes to essentially hug your phone. The Ultimate Weekend Bag

Getting out of town for a weekend to recharge the batteries does wonders. Some of us opt for outdoors while others just want to relax. Some like to visit family or friends, some go solo. Some travel by air, others by bus or train (or bike or feet). But one thing our getaways have in common is the need to pack a variety of stuff. Clothes, sports gear, toiletries, gadgets. It is rare to find a bag that meets all needs. But we think the Skooba Laptop Weekender, $179.99 at Brookstone, may be the perfect solution.

The Weekender has a rectangular, gym bag look. The main compartment provides plenty of space for a few days of clothing or even sports equipment. What makes the Weekender unique are the four zip down compartments on the sides. One end perfectly stores most 15" laptops. It contains Skooba's exclusive Bumper Bar™ protection on the sides and bottom for extra cushioning. And for the airplane travelers the laptop is easily accessible for security checks. The other end of the bag provides a tablet space. The longer sides contain space for files and phones or smaller devices. In total the Weekender has 12 compartments or pockets – plenty to keep you organized on your short journey. And of course it will easily fit in standard commercial overhead bins. So prepare yourself for you next quick trip, and rest assured that your belongings will be safe and sound in the Skooba Laptop Weekender.

NYNE Bluetooth Speaker – Take it with You when You Go.

I live in an area where everyone is on a bike. I see them all day long with their spandex on, water bottles strapped to their bike frames and earbuds in their ears. Now I’m sure they’re listing to very motivational music, I mean, I know I’d need motivational music (or a rabid pit bull behind me) to keep going. What they are NOT listening to however, is me honking my horn. I honestly don’t mind one bit, but it just doesn’t seem safe.

So for those of you that are athletically inclined (or love someone who is) you may want to check out NYNE’s NB-200 Bluetooth speaker. Small enough to fit in your pocketbook, the NB-200 comes with custom clips that allow you to attach device to your handlebars and enjoy incredible sound quality, while still being able to hear the important sounds of the road around you.

Listen to streaming music from your Bluetooth connected device, fast forward, or adjust volume from the speaker’s controls located right at your fingertips. Answer calls through the NB-200′s speaker by simply pressing the answer button and chatting away, or wait till your grueling uphill battle has been won, and call back the last number that called you, again, right from your speaker.

The NB-200, is light, powerful and very compact, charges via micro USB, has a microphone with noise cancellation capabilities and is easy to pair with your iDevice. Its rechargeable lithium ion battery is good for about 5 hours of continuous play time. 5 hours? on a bike? I’m tired just thinking about it. The NB-200 is available at amazon.com for around 129 bucks and if I had a bike, or participated in any form of physical exercise whatsoever, I’d want one.

Panasonic Toughbook 53 upgraded

I am quite the klutz, where toys that have been working just fine all these years, when handed down to me, would apparently arrive at the end of their lives without me having to make an effort. I am not quite sure just what this is the case, perhaps it is some sort of subconscious thing, or has my family been secretly plotting to have me believe that I am a true blue klutz? Having said that, I have yet to drop a mobile phone into the toilet bowl all these years, and I do not intend to start. I did crack a screen on my smartphone before, but that was a one-off experience that I shall not venture into. Having said that when it comes to computers, one too, might want to be more careful, especially since notebooks are not the cheapest things in town that you can purchase a replacement when you break yours. Panasonic has racked up quite a reputation for itself in terms of rugged notebooks, and today, we hear of them upgrading the Panasonic Toughbook 53.

The semi-rugged Toughbook 53 notebook has proven itself to be a reliable and versatile servant over the years to many people in demanding industries such as the insurance market, those who deal with construction sites, as well as battle hardened folks in the military. The updated Toughbook 53 will be the latest model that will be made available with an Intel Core i5-3320M vPro processor (3MB cache, up to 3.3 GHz) with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, where some of the other enhancements will include expanded storage and improved connectivity options.

Other hardware features of the Toughbook 53 include a spill-resistant keyboard, and this particular puppy has been certified by an independent third party to pass nine MIL-STD-810G tests, ranging from surviving 3 foot drops on 26 faces. Having said that, the high-definition, 14" LED display still went strong without a crack, and you can also opt to splash more cash to enjoy viewing the optional 2-850 nit sunlight-viewable Panasonic CircuLumin touchscreen display coupled with an adjustable backlit emissive keyboard so that you can work even if there is no light or the environment is just way too bright for normal notebooks.

The Toughbook 53 will also come with a range of embedded wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 4G LTE or 3G Gobi mobile broadband so that you need not worry about being disconnected no matter which part of the world you are in.

Depending on the hardware configuration of the Panasonic Toughbook 53, prices start from $1,399 upwards and it comes with a standard three-year limited warranty.

The New Lytro Camera – Focus After the Fact!

Photographs are an important part of my life. I admit I’m the one that has a camera everywhere I go, no, I don’t drag my giant Nikon with me to every walk in the park, but I almost always have at least a point and shoot camera in my pocket… you just never know when that magical shot will reveal itself, if you love pictures, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Check out the new Lytro camera, and although it gives a fun and almost toy-like appearance, it is everything but. Touting the ability to focus “after the fact,” this camera actually captures all planes of light in a given picture, this allows you to take a truly instantaneous shot, without waiting for focus or for shutter delay. In other words, you get the shot exactly when you wanted it and you can play with the focus later.

Okay, so field of light photography isn’t actually new, but having this kind of ability in a tiny hand held camera is, and being able to share these photos with family and friends, and let them get in on the action and play with all your interactive photo features also makes for a novel photo experience. I don’t believe this is the only camera you’ll want to own, but if you already have a camera, this one certainly provides a fun alternative.

The Lytro Camera comes in either 16G ($499.00) or 8G ($399.00), with an 8X optical zoom, it includes the desktop application needed to process and interact with your cool HD quality “living pictures.” I have to say I did not find any mention of megapixels, so I can’t comment on print quality, but I can say, it sounds like an interesting gadget for the shutterbugs among us. Find more information, or interact with some fabulous photos at lytro.com. The Lytro Field of Light Camera will be available in October.

Tagg Pet Tracker ensures you know just how much activity your pet has been getting

I am a firm believer in Cesar Millan's methods when interacting with dogs – you basically got to establish yourself as the alpha dog in the home, while the rest of your family members follow the pecking order with Fido (even though he might be one mean looking brute) right down there at the bottom. Right under the resident tortoise, even. Another thing is to make sure that your precious furkid gets an adequate amount of exercise each day, and how do you do that? Obviously bringing Fido out for walks in the mornings as well as evenings would be part of the routine, and you can also get some exercise along the way as well. Some breeds do require more exercise than others, and if you want everything to boil down to exact figures, then you might be interested in the Tagg Pet Tracker that will let you, the pet's owner, know just where your pet is, as well as receiving a notification just in case it gets lost.

Not only that, it will be able to offer a new activity tracking feature that lets you have a greater, detailed breakdown on your furkid's daily activity. Has it been lounging around at home, or burning enough calories chasing the postman? This new functionality will be available when October rolls around, where current Tagg users are able to take advantage of it without having to fork out a single cent, ensuring that the device will be enhanced with existing location tracking capabilities.

In addition, the new activity tracking feature will allow pet parents to indulge in this thing known as daily Tagg Points, where you can take advantage of at-a-glance snapshots of your pets' activity in a 24-hour period. All movement will be detected by the Tagg tracker, and points are assigned based on the intensity and duration of the activity, where the scale ranges from resting to highly active.

Tagg Points can be accumulated and charted each day, so that you have conclusive data that would help you make more informed decisions about your pets' exercise routines. So how about it? Ready to fork out $99.95 for a (theoretically) fitter Fido?

Eye Fatigue Preventing Magnifier

Some of us are blessed with perfect vision, and we are able to go through our entire lives without having to worry about washing a pair of glasses, smearing them with greasy fingers after a delightful pizza meal, or having to tussle with the stubborn contact lens on those days when it simply refuses to remain put on your cornea. Well, for those of us who have four eyes instead of two, you might want to rely on a different magnifying tool once in a while when indulging in your daily reading. Enter the $79.95 Eye Fatigue Preventing Magnifier which will function as an illuminated magnifier that emits clarity-enhancing, white illumination so that natural daylight is simulated in an attempt to reduce eye fatigue.

A grand total of five dozen (that would be sixty for the mathematically challenged) LEDs will attempt to simulate the color fidelity of natural sunlight, making sure it illuminates crafts or small print with crisp, focused illumination without any of the eyestrain-inducing glare that often comes across as a by-product of incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. Sporting a 3.75" diameter glass lens that delivers 1.75X magnification, you can be sure that you might find yourself reading far more often than ever with this. The LEDs have been specially rated for 30,000 hours, and each purchase will be accompanied by a protective lens cover and a cleaning cloth.

Penbo Lovable Penguin

Love makes the world go round, or so that is what we have been taught to believe. Well, some of our friends in the animal kingdom are easily lovable without much effort on your part, such as puppies, kittens, and of course, penguins. It is not going to be easy keeping a pet penguin in your home due to the kind of special environment that it needs to thrive in, which is why if your little toddler has been bugging you for a pet penguin for his or her birthday, you can give in to that request – without getting a real penguin. Still, the $59.99 Penbo Lovable Penguin is one lovable bugger, as Penbo interacts with you through touch and sound.

Not only that, there is a surprise-colored (pink, blue or green, although we would have liked to see the entire rainbow range) Bebe which will pop out from Penbo's stomach pouch (is this some sort of penguin-kangaroo hybrid that we do not know of?), playing games with one another to boot. Penbo is capable of chirping and dancing around, and just like some of the more modern toys, will be able to communicate and interact with Bebe and other Penbos too. Best to get rechargeable batteries in your home if you want the Penbo Lovable Penguin to be a permanent fixture, as it runs on half a dozen AA batteries.
