Yah, but Has Your Phone Done THIS?

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 11:14 AM PDT

Protect Your Bubble, US and UK insurer of gadgets, frequently surveys their claims and patrons to learn more about what exactly they do with their technology. Being one of the largest mobile phone insurer they decided to query their customers on the most unconventional uses for a cell phone. And oh did their customers come through! Here are the top 5:

1)      A medical guide for life saving surgery: A British surgeon successfully amputated the arm of a mortally wounded teenager in Congo, Africa, with help from instructions sent to him by text message. The teenager had only a few days to live after his arms were ripped off and gangrene began to set in. Seeking expert advice, David Nott texted his surgical colleague, Meirion Thomas. Thomas replied almost instantly, with ten steps Nott should follow to safely complete the surgery. Amazingly, the surgery was a complete success and the teenager made a full recovery.

2)      Mobile breathalyzer: Had one too many? Now, iPhone users who take drinking responsibly can check their blood alcohol content with the Ibreath. Capable of measuring between 0.000 to 0.100%, the attachable gadget gives you the power to prevent an arrest or an accident before getting behind the wheel. Compatible with iPhones and iPods, the gadget also surprisingly, and rather irrelevantly, doubles as an FM transmitter, which can transmit your personal music wirelessly to your car radio.

3)      Bulletproof vest: While out mowing the lawn, Ronald Richard, of New Orleans, was hit by a stray .45 calibre bullet square in the chest. Incredibly, Mr. Richards was completely uninjured when the bullet hit his mobile phone which was quite fortunately clipped to his overalls, just over his heart. The bullet, believed to be a stray from hunters in nearby woodlands, completely destroyed the mobile phone, but at least Mr. Richards was able to finish mowing the lawn.

4)      Shooting a love story: An award-winning film maker used a Nokia N8 mobile phone to film and produce a first-person love story. The short film depicts an interesting first person perspective of one lover from France, and one from New York who seem worlds apart making their way overseas to close the gap and reunite. The film, lasting just two minutes and 25 seconds, was dubbed winner of the Nokia Short Competition 2011 and the 9th most creative internet film of 2011 by TIME Magazine.

5)      A shocking weapon: Surely, everyone remembers Naomi Campbell launching her mobile phone at a maid? Well now, a self-defense company have taken mobile phone weaponry one step further, with the launch of a mobile phone stun-gun. Not actually able to make calls, the stun gun looks exactly like an everyday mobile phone, until a button is pressed and the gadget releases up to a whopping 3.6 million volt shock to any would be attacker. Quite impressively, the top of the range model also doubles as a flash light.

Have you had any crazy mishaps or 'new uses' with your cell phone? Post below!

Blokket Signal Blocking Phone Pocket

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 06:30 AM PDT

Just what the entire point of this $24.99 Blokket Signal Blocking Phone Pocket is all about? If I do not want to be reached by the world on my phone, I would jolly well turn it off. Having the Blokket Signal Blocking Phone Pocket is self-explanatory, it makes sure that your handset receives no signal at all, and hence, you cannot be contacted. Measuring 5" x 8", this RFID blocking pouch is said to be able to block radio frequencies up to 99.7% – helping protect your passport as well as chipped ID cards, now how about that? I guess to answer my first question, security is the name of the game here.

Those without willpower to turn off the phone or change it into airplane mode would have the Blokket Signal Blocking Phone Pocket offer a far easier alternative, where you slip your handset into the Blokket Signal Blocking Phone Pocket, and it is as dead as a doornail, without having you to turn it off. I guess personal data and identity protection would be its primary function here, and if it ever gets greasy, there is nothing quite like a little bit of hand washing action to get done, is there?

Talk Back Mimicking Tomcat

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT

When we were younger, we were told not to talk back to our elders, and this is one piece of advice that many a young 'un seem to have forgotten about these days. "Talking back" is not always a bad thing though, as young children learning how to speak will always mimic those around them, which is where this $39.95 Talk Back Mimicking Tomcat comes in.

The Talk Back Mimicking Tomcat, as its name suggests, is full well capable of repeating anything said to it in a cartoonish voice. This is definitely able to elicit laughter during one of those more tense moments in life, and it gained its inspiration from a popular smartphone app. A single press of its paw will allow him to record just about anything and everything he hears, mimicking the speaker in a high-pitched voice. There are touch sensors which are located in his foot, while his belly is able to yield grunts, whines, and purrs when pressed, similar to the app, except that this is in real life. A trio of AAA batteries, and not cat food, are required to power this puppy.

Next generation Razer Blade offers cutting edge performance

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 05:30 AM PDT

We have seen companies offer gaming laptops from time to time, and these tend to be huge behemoths in their own right. Well, they definitely are not to blame of course, considering the fact that you need enough physical space to be able to cram in all the necessary powerful parts and components of a gaming machine in a portable format. PAX Prime saw the rise of another next generation gaming laptop, continuing from where the original Razer Blade left off. This new model is said to sport extreme performance while coming in an ultra-portable form factor, where we will give it a closer scrutiny right after the jump.

When the original Razer Blade was revealed to the world in August last year, it basically blew expectations on what a gaming laptop should look and perform like. Well, this new model is set to break new ground as well, pushing performance limits without compromising on its ultra-thin form factor. Folks who are interested and have enough faith in Razer's R&D team would be able to drop $2,499 for a pre-order of the machine, where shipping to folks living in North America will commence on September 30th.

In order to make sure the new Razer Blade will run nice and cool, it ditched the predecessor's thermal system, went back to the drawing board and re-engineered what you see from custom-crafted parts with larger vents and specially designed heat pipes so that additional airflow will be able to make its way to the unit's extreme components. Touted to carry one of the most innovative thermal solutions in the industry, we are talking about plenty of power crammed into an ultra-thin form factor that measures all of just 0.88" thin, now how about that? We are talking about more than 50% the thickness of traditional gaming laptops of comparable performance.

The entire shebang tips the scales at under seven pounds, including its ultra-slim power supply, also making it the lightest gaming laptop in its class. A more detailed breakdown of the hardware specifications can be seen below.

  • Future platform with 3rd Generation Intel Core Processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M with NVIDIA Optimus Technology
  • 2GB Dedicated GDDR5 Video Memory
  • 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory
  • 17.3-in. LED Backlit Display (1920×1080)
  • Built-in HD Webcam
  • Integrated 60Wh Battery
  • 500GB 7200RPM HDD (Primary Storage)
  • 64GB SATA III SSD with NVELO Dataplex Software (Cache Acceleration)
  • Wireless Network 802.11 A/G/N + BT4.0

BMW and Thermaltake come up with Level 10 M Gaming Mouse

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 05:00 AM PDT

So you think you have got quite a mean looking gaming mouse for your setup, do you? What if I told you that another mouse in question is one that what been concocted by the very same people who brought you the Bimmer (or Beemer, depending on which side of the fence you are on). Yes sir, a branch from the automotive giant, BMW Group DesignworksUSA has teamed up with Thermaltake to introduce the Level 10 M gaming mouse. As you can tell by the image above, it definitely is a looker from all angles, but the thing is this – how does it hold up against the rest of the highly competitive gaming hardware crowd? Let us take a closer look after the jump, shall we?

The unique thing about the Level 10 M gaming mouse is the fact that it resembles an extremely small racecar, boasting every designer's mantra where form ultimately follows function. The outer chassis itself comprises of a two-part construction, where the upper half does seem to float above the base as though by magic, but make no mistake about it – it is technology that holds the entire thing together.

Constructed using an alloy that is also used in aeronautics and architecture, Level 10 M is lightweight and ultimately, remains immune to corrosive effects. The top segment can even be individually adjusted for height and lateral inclination, where the mouse itself will also come with a bunch of keys, now how about that, so that you are able better to "deliver the goods" so to speak in a highly competitive environment.

What's great hardware without equally stunning software? Nothing, right? Which is why the software that comes with this puppy is also able to read out DPi-rates for gaming visuals. The holes drilled in the upper shell serves are not there just for aesthetic purposes, but rather, to help ventilate your palms during an intense gaming session, to make sure that you maintain a perfect grip at all times. As a bonus, the mouse can be illuminated in 7 different colors for that added touch of class.

The Level 10 M comes with on-the-fly adjustable DPI from 800, 1600, 3200 to 5000 (default setting), and customizable by software application up to 8200 DPI. It will retail for $99 a pop.
