Cops wear Body Mounted Cameras – Say Cheese! Posted: 24 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST
You see it everyday, a police officer involved in some sort of a scuffle that’s been recorded on someone’s Smartphone. It almost always makes the officer look bad. I watch these events unfold on my TV almost every night, and I wonder to myself, what happened BEFORE someone started recording? I mean, surely the “bad guy” wasn’t just walking down the street minding his own business… Well, in towns all over the country, we wont be left to wonder anymore, cops in many places nationwide have been outfitted with tiny wearable cameras. Unlike the often observed dashboard cameras, these little guys can be worn on a collar, head mount or with the Taser unit shown above, even mounted on Oakley sunglasses. These devices will capture everything from the police officers point of view, not just at the point that some spectator decided to start recording. Police simply activate the device and begin recording evidence that will negate any disputes as to what actually happened. Most of these HD digital micro-cameras are about 2 inches long, an inch wide and are voice activated. Compatible with Android and iOs, all recordings made by these cameras are date and time stamped and cannot be altered or erased and designed to preserve chain of custody concerns, although the officer is most often in charge of initially activating the camera, and they also have the ability to turn it off. On TV when the camera goes off, its never a good thing, is it? So is moving towards a body worn camera for all officers a good idea? Does it put the officers in danger or do more to protect the public? Some folks feel that cameras will lead to better performance and more professionalism on the job, others feel it will safeguard against bogus lawsuits, still others feel as though its a violation of privacy on both sides. The jury is still out on this one for me… but I think you’re going to see them around your town all the same… Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. The Water Pebble – Save the Earth while you Shower Posted: 24 Feb 2012 07:17 AM PST My daughter came home from school with a little booklet of things we can do to save the earth, she is supposed to pick 2 each week, and be in charge of making sure they happen. She tried to pick having one day a week with no electronics (including TV) After a family meeting, we decided that may not be the best choice. I’m leaning towards having her walk to school and having only toys without batteries, she’s not having that, but here is a little gizmo that might work for us… Check out the Water Pebble, a neat little palm sized device that sits on the floor of your shower and monitors the water going down the drain. The Water Pebble cleverly memorizes your initial shower patterns and then slowly scales them back, reducing your shower time and helping your family conserve water, without even noticing. Now there’s something we can live with. Using the Water Pebble is simple, you place it on the floor near the shower drain, it will flash green, amber and red as it reads your initial water usage, after that, each time you shower it will flash green to start, amber to signal you that you are halfway through (and its time to rinse your shampoo) and finally red, to let you know its time to turn off the water and get out! So every showers water usage is reduced just a little bit, which of course eventually saves a whole lot of water. It helps the earth, it saves you money, time and thankfully, it might just get me a little hot water next time I have to shower after my kid does… after all, its her job to save the earth, and no one said it was going to be easy. Available at UncommonGoods.com for only 10 bucks. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. LG Optimus 4X HD sports four cores within Posted: 24 Feb 2012 05:30 AM PST
According to Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company, "LG introduced the world's first Dual-Core smartphone exactly one year ago and today we're announcing the next milestone. But speed in itself isn't what makes LG Optimus 4X HD unique, it's the benefit we're bringing to customers with the HD multimedia experience in a mobile form factor." Just what makes the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor so special? For starters, it is the world’s only 4-PLUS-1 Quad-Core mobile processor that was specially designed for high-level multimedia performance, and to sweeten the deal, it comes with a fifth batterysaver core that allows it to handle less demanding tasks including active standby and music playback. When you want to push it to the maximum though, the 12-core graphics processing unit (GPU) in Tegra 3 are more than capable of stepping up to the task, delivering a visually rich experience and console-quality game playability. As for the True HD IPS display that we talked about earlier, the Optimus 4X HD is said to guarantee the finest viewing experience with high resolution, clarity and your eyes need not “suffer” from color or shape distortion. 16GB of internal memory will ship with the Optimus 4X HD, where it will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich so you need not wait for an update right out of the box. A 8-megapixel BSI (Backside Illumination) Sensor camera with LED flash ought to make this one truly desirable smartphone – now to wait for a price and availability announcement. AT&T delivers Samsung Rugby Smart next month Posted: 24 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST
This has led to an explosive growth of third party accessories for the smartphone and tablet markets, but how about incorporating a little bit of ruggedness into a handset? This is exactly what Samsung has done with their latest creation which they call the Samsung Rugby Smart. I guess this is a sequel to the Samsung Rugby which was released in 2010, so let us take a closer look at it in the extended post. The Samsung Rugby Smart is one tough cookie, where it complies to 810F military specifications that include Dust, Humidity, Rain, Shock and Temperature resistance, allowing you to dunk the Rugby Smart into water (no more than 1 meter in depth) for up to half an hour without causing it to fizzle out, while the entire phone is also able to survive in extreme temperatures without missing a beat. The 3.7″ WVGA Super AMOLED touchscreen display ought to be enough for everyday use and perhaps to even watch the occasional movie, while a 5-megapixel at the back is capable of High Definition movie recording. Want to hold a video call? That is not a problem with a 1.3-megapixel shooter up in front. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and HSPA+. The Samsung Rugby Smart will arrive on AT&T this March 4th at $99.99 a pop, after committing to a 2-year agreement, of course. No idea on whether Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be offered as an update down the road or not, as it comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread right out of the box.
