Posted: 08 Dec 2011 07:30 AM PST For some reason, I seem to be reviewing gadgets that would be great gifts for those who love the outdoors. I’m sure there is a better name to describe that audience, but I think you will see that they would enjoy the Drift HD Action Camera. The Drift HD is designed to be on the same level as the Go Pro cameras for those point-of-view shots that you see on video-sharing sites. In this case, the Drift HD is designed to travel on the side of the head of a biker, skier, or other extreme sportsman (or woman) for action shots. It comes with a lot of straps and mounts to make this easy to happen, too. I don’t know how it relates to the Go Pro, but it comes with a cool remote control that you can flip on and off when you got the shot you want. Think of it as an easy way of editing the boring stuff you won’t want to film. If that isn’t enough, there is a playback LCD screen so you can see how the shot went, in case you have to do it over again. I got a chance to try it out, and I will recommend it to the audience that I mentioned before. Just make sure that the LCD screen is on the left side, like you see in the picture. I found the shots came out with a fisheye type view, but they were clear. I also found it easy to rip the video off the microSD card, and connect to my TV with the HDMI cable for 1080p footage. You should be able to get it for about $369 online, but perhaps you can look around to see if you can get a cheaper price. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Joy Factory’s Klick Desk Stand for the iPad 2 Posted: 08 Dec 2011 07:15 AM PST It seems like any good mobile device always needs to have a stand, and Joy Factory’s Klick Desk Stand is a good fit for the iPad 2. The design of the Klick Desk Stand reminds me of something out of The Jetsons, where televisions were mounted on curvy beams like the neck of this device. At the end of this neck is a swivel mount for the iPad 2, which clicks easily into a detachable back cover. This allows the iPad 2 to have “720 Rotation” so it can spin on an axis in two directions. In addition to the swivel at the end of the neck, the stand is a sturdy base that can swivel as well. You will definitely find the optimum angle for viewing with this. By the way, if you have one of those Smart Covers for your iPad, the cover that the Klick Stand provides will not get in its way. The back cover and the Smart Cover will make for extra protection when you take the iPad 2 on the road. However, the real purpose of the Klick Desk Stand is to avoid “possible injures from prolonged usage of the iPad 2 with improper postures”. That sounds good to me. If this sounds good to you, feel free to head to the Joy Factory site and pay $59.95 for it. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Colonel Littleton’s No. 46 Phone Holster Posted: 08 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST Remember how I talked about the Mo-Tool being the perfect manly gift? Well, I still think it is, but if you have someone on your list who likes quality leather goods as much as his smartphone, then you might want to look into the Colonel Littleton’s No. 46 Holster. The holster is designed to protect the iPhone, iPod, MP3 Player, or any other small device. There is a vertical belt loop on the back that can accommodate most 1 1/2 inch belts. Colonel Littleton takes more pride in his work than Colonel Sanders. The holster came with a card explaining how his leather goods are “American vegetable-tanned steer hide that has received a minimum of alteration”. You check out the good Colonel’s website if you want to here more about that, and I highly recommend looking at some of his other products as well. For some reason, I can’t help but think that Colonel Littleton’s products are a perfect gift for steampunk enthusiasts. Even though the official word on the Griffin site is that the No. 46 holster can accommodate “taller phones”, but it didn’t quite fit my Droid X. I am guessing that any phone with a larger than 4 inch display might not fit either. The No. 46 Holster can be purchased on Griffin’s site for about $65.00, and it is available in both brown leather or black. Lightnight Reaction for some shocking gaming sessions Posted: 08 Dec 2011 05:30 AM PST If you want to develop lightning quick reflexes, training with an enraged snake (the more poisonous the better, since it will up the ante) will definitely do that, but for a far less risky venture, you might want to check out the $29.99 Lightnight Reaction. This particular shocking party game will see the losers get a nice zap to their hands, definitely not a feeling that any of us would like. I guess it is also a deterrent for those who have hatched plans to perform some nefarious deeds down the road which might result in the electric chair, no? Parties need to be fun, and when you couple a free flow of booze with the chances of getting shocked, you know you’re in for a smashing time. After all, drinking alcohol will slow down your reflexes and perhaps dull your senses, increasing the chances of you “losing” at this game. Basically, four players will participate in this game, where each of them will grab a controller from the base unit. When the light in the middle of the base illuminates, make sure you are the first person to press the button on your controller – and get this, only the FASTEST person will be safe from any shocks. The shock factor can also be adjusted, depending on how much of a hero(ine) or wuss you are. Hyperkin Game Genie offers lifeline for tough DS games Posted: 08 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST Old school games on the Sega Megadrive and SNES tend to be broken down into two categories – they’re either relatively easy to complete, or the game’s designers are dead set against you seeing the end credits roll. Apart from purchasing walkthroughs in the form of books (there was no such thing known as Gamefaqs.com back then, younglings), you could either get into contact with the local video game maestro and ask his or her help through a particular dungeon. That is, until the Game Genie attachment came along, opening up an entire world of gaming possibilities that turned you into a gaming god (aka cheating). Well, it has been more than a decade now, and a somewhat similar device makes a return in the form of the Hyperkin Game Genie, where $19.99 is all you need to fork out to unlock secret codes hidden in your favorite Nintendo DS video games. It will be compatible with 3DS, DSi, DSi XL, DS Lite and DS handheld consoles, offering you the opportunity to check out the hidden secrets of games as well as unlocking the potential to more than 300 DS titles. Heck, it can also be upgraded thanks to the DS WiFi Receiver. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. PowerSkin Gaming Skin for iOS announced Posted: 08 Dec 2011 04:30 AM PST The iOS operating system from Apple has certainly done a whole lot to promote smartphones as a viable gaming platform – you see Nintendo and Sony executives pulling long faces, knowing that casual games for the iPhone and iPod touch have certainly cannibalized sales of the PSP and Nintendo 3DS to a certain degree, no matter how small or little it might be perceived. Well, one thing about the iPhone as a portable gaming device of your choice though – it will definitely drain the battery far more than normal, turning it into an extremely abysmal figure where battery life is concerned. This is where PowerSkin brings their iPhone case expertise to the forefront – with the introduction of the Gaming Skin for iOS. This protective cover and permanent power supply for iOS devices was specially designed to enhance the gaming experience, offering built-in-stereo speakers as well as rumbling vibrations in order to deliver a far more immersive playing experience than ever before. We’re also glad to say that the Gaming Skin for iOS is not only compatible with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, it will also play nice with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Gen iPod touch; in addition to the older iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. As we all know, whenever we game, some of us tend to end up with sweaty palms, making the device in our hands slippery to hold. The Gaming Skin eliminates that possibility, since it was specially designed to improve one’s grip whenever you game, not to mention offering a certain degree of protection against nicks and short drops. Gaming time and/or video playback is also extended by another 10 hours at best, thanks to its power capacity of 2050 mAh. You can also charge the Gaming Skin and iOS device simultaneously through connecting them into a notebook or wall charger. The Gaming Skin for iOS will retail for $99.99 if you are interested. Which is your primary mobile gaming device of choice, and why? Do you think that more and more people will veer towards casual gaming, instead of relying on the old school heavyweights like consoles from Nintendo and Sony?
