Mega Hurtz Paintball Robot

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 04:50 PM PST

Before you start panicking at the sight of this monster, you should know that it is made to shoot only paintballs…for now.

This is the Mega Hurtz, and this battle-bot is designed to be piloted by remote control to take out as many paintball baddies as possible. It was designed by Chris Rogers, and it is equipped with video cameras and a remote with an LCD screen.

I realize that this photo doesn’t give a good idea of a size of this thing, but it weighs in at 280 lbs. I’m guessing that you’ll need at least a pickup track to haul this guy into battle.

Of course, once you let if off the chain, you’ll be able to use the red laser sights, night vision, and shoot opponents at a range of 500 feet.

Yes, you would probably dominate driving one of these. Of course, this thing has an Achilles heel. A few precisely aimed paintballs could take out the cameras which would leave the Mega Hurtz blind.

The Mega Hurtz is one of those Kickstarter projects. For those who aren’t familiar with Kickstarter, it is a place where inventors put their creations online, and ask for support. Perhaps he’ll get the support, and we’ll see this in military actions.

Check out the most advanced surfboard

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 04:23 PM PST

Considering that practically everything has some sort of technological upgrade, I have always wondered why surfboards have never received one. Believe, it has nothing to do with the fact that they get wet. We have waterproof technology now.

After all, don’t you think that it would help to have a gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS, and compass on board? This is what Pukas and Tecnalia have done, and there is a video of their creation after the jump if you want to see it in action.

Not to be too much of a spoiler, but the video shows the board moving around on the water, and it looks like its movement is being matched on real-time. This is because the team installed the data and gathering electronics like sensors and hardware into the surfboard to transfer it to the computer.

I can see how this would easily improve surfing. Imagine being out on the waves, and a computerized voice tells you that a huge wave is coming, and tells you how you should hit it. Man, the Beach Boys never sang about this.

Of course, I’m sure it will be the Beach Boys and other hardcore surfers that will frown on this technology, saying that it makes it too easy to become a great surfer. After all, just because you can technologize something, doesn’t mean that you should.

The IQ alarm clock

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 03:59 PM PST

I don’t know about you, but I can’t really figure out at what point in time to I become truly awake. We once covered devices like the SleepTracker that find the primary “wakeup point” of the user, but this IQ Alarm has a different idea.

Imagine if you had an alarm that puts you in a mentally ready state so that you will want to get up, because you are too intellectually stimulated to go back to sleep again.

That would be the IQ Alarm, a concept device that wakes the user up with the usual alarm sound, but in order to make the alarm stop, you have to answer one to three questions.

My Source does not say what happens if the user does not answer the questions correctly. Hopefully this won’t cause the IQ Alarm clock to sound even louder. By the way, there clock has a tamper-resistant battery cover, so you won’t be able to just shut the thing off by removing the power source.

By the way, where will the questions come from? There had better be at least five years worth of morning trivia in there. Perhaps it will be connected via Wi-Fi to a constantly changing trivia site. Well, it is still a concept for now.

By the way, you can’t really see the question, but it reads: “Which of the following figures is the odd one out?” Anyone want to leave a comment with the answer, and an explanation? I believe I know it, but I won’t tell you.

Fijit Friends – Robots for Girls

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 08:14 PM PST

It's no surprise that kids flock towards interactive toys. I remember when the closest thing I had to interactive toy was a my Rock Flowers doll, she would attach to the top of a little yellow record that every doll came with, and she would spin on top of your record player for as long as you left the darn thing on. I would dance with "Lilac" for hours. Forget interactive toys, my kid doesn't even know what a record player is.

My how times have changed, Check out Fijit Friends, made of soft, squishable skin that enables life-like movements, girls can poke and squeeze a Fijit Friend for fun surprises. With chirp technology (special audio coding usually embedded in media platforms like commercials or webisodes) Fijit Friends can actually react to something that you're watching, and with their word recognition capability, Fijit Friends can understand and respond to more than 30 verbal commands, with more than 150 built-in phrases and jokes.

With specialized "Beat Detection" your Fijit Friends can recognize different types of music and perform dance moves on tempo, sure beats the heck out of the endless spinning of my poor Rock Flowers doll huh? And they include four original songs of their own… but I'll bet, severely lacking the very cool 60's vibe of my little yellow 45's. Hey, I’m trying to make myself feel better here.

There will be four different Fijit Friends that all have distinct colors, voices, ears and personalities. Available for pre-order at www.amazon.com for around $49.00 bucks. I think I want one.

MetroPCS teams up with Snoop Dogg for Samsung Galaxy Indulge

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:52 PM PST

Rappers are one of the better businessmen out there, after all they tend to drive those flashy big cars, cruising around town with a couple of birds in the back seat, wearing a whole lot of bling while boasting of an earning power which would put a small nation’s GDP to shame. Well, guess when it comes to money, it is never enough for most people.

One of the more famous rappers to have graced this planet would be Snoop Dogg, and here he is teaming up with MetroPCS (one of the smaller mobile carriers in the US), introducing the recently announced Samsung Galaxy IndulgeT, which holds the distinction of being the world's first commercially available 4G LTE Android smartphone, where it is offered only with 4GLTE service from MetroPCS.

According to Snoop Dogggg, "It feels good to be working with MetroPCS and Samsung for the launch of the Galaxy Indulge. I'm stepping it up to 4G's so my phone can keep up with my demanding, always-connected lifestyle.” Now we don’t know if that is the gospel truth, or was it part of his endorsement plan, but at least there is one thing we do know – that hot dawg lives a demanding lifestyle, yo!

Of course, MetroPCS and Snoop Dogg has your money’s best interest in mind (that depends on how you see it), so they will be offering the 4GLTE smartphone service plans at around half the cost of other carriers' 4G smartphone service plans if you decide to shop around. Both $50 and $60 plans will include all applicable taxes and regulatory fees, not to mention MetroPCS’ unmatched value with unlimited talk, text and 4GLTE Web page browsing.

Feel free too to enjoy unlimited data access (this is also pretty subjective, there is usually a cap before they throttle your line) to streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications on the Galaxy Indulge. If you were looking for a new smartphone that is supposedly blazing fast, tearing up the performance charts, the Galaxy Indulge might be worth a peek.

AOC to deliver Aire Black LED monitor

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:05 PM PST

Who would have thought that AOC is the world's largest manufacturer of LCD/LED Monitors and HDTVs? I myself would think much more of other notable players including Samsung and LG, but what the heck – facts speak for themselves. Well, having said that, AOC has just unveiled their spanking new Aire Black LED, which is actually a glossy piano-black monitor that boasts the fact of it being one of the world's slimmest display panels.

This is a new all-black addition to the already popular AireLED Series, and you can expect it to offer much more compared to its predecessors. Among the bonus features would include an embedded Screen+ software which lets you divide the screen into a quartet of self-contained work areas. Sounds good if you happen to do a whole lot of multitasking, but the screen sizes of 20″, 22″ and 23″ won’t be able to do your eyes much justice in the long run – we say go for a dual monitor setup instead.

The sleek widescreen Aire Black LED monitor is pretty proud of being one of the slimmest display panels on the market at the moment, measuring a mere 12.7mm in size. The monitor itself delivers impressive image quality that should be super pleasing on your eyes, although we will need to verify that for ourselves if they decide to send a review unit.

Features include a 50,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 5ms response time, and a DVI-D with HDCP input that ought to make for an above-average HD viewing experience. It boasts of the EPEAT Gold Certification due to its green packaging and production, as the Aire Black LED Monitor sips on average a mere 15 watts of energy and includes an eSaver feature which allows you to preset power conservation modes for the display whenever the PC is left alone.

As mentioned earlier, the Aire Black LED monitor will be available in 20-inch (e2043Fk, $129), 22-inch (e2243Fwk, $149) and 23-inch (e2343Fk, $179) screen sizes, and at those price points, it ain’t too shabby if you’re looking for a secondary monitor to boost your productivity at home or at the office.

Children’s Water Ski Trainer

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 05:50 PM PST

If your little ones want to pick up water skiing, how do you break their hearts and tell them “No”? Just like most parents out there who intend to give the best to their kids, you too, might want to consider what Hammacher has up their sleeves with the Children’s Water Ski Trainer.

This is an inflatable trainer which will go some way in letting that little progeny of yours learn the fundamentals of water skiing in an enjoyable, non-threatening manner. Instead of struggling with skis in the water, your little one will step into the trainer from the boat, followed by taking off from a stable seated position.

The trainer itself comes with a wide platform, padded handle, and foot bindings that will definitely do their part in helping little ones quickly learn how to raise themselves to a standing position, alongside shifting their weight to make turns. There will, of course, be adult supervision as an observer in the boat will hold the 40′ tow rope for it to be released immediately after a spill so that the trainer remains near the child.

The trainer itself boasts of an 800 denier inflatable cover with a built-in wood skimmer for exceptional stability, and will be able to support kids (or super skinny ladies) who do not tip the scales at more than 65 lbs. Expect to fork out $169.95 for the Children’s Water Ski Trainer.

Video Bowling, powered by a kiss

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 05:32 PM PST

Every once in a while, some device comes out that is so kooky (for lack of a better word) that you don’t even have to comment on it.

In this case, it is the kiss-powered bowling. I will explain how it works after the jump. You can also watch a video of it in case you think I’m totally making this up.

Here’s how it works:

…a customized headset that functions as a sensor receiver and a magnet that provides sensor input. The user affixes a magnet to his/ her tongue with Fixodent. Magnetic field sensors are attached to the end of the headset and positioned in front of the mouth. As the user moves her tongue, this creates varying magnetic fields that are used to control games.

Hye Yeon Nam, the creator of this kiss bowling game, says that the goal is to “increase the speed of the ball by moving the tongue faster”. Okay, I don’t know if I want to think about this any more.

So if you want to get a kiss on the first date, you could always take your date bowling. Okay, that’s probably the best joke that I can make on this. You are more than welcome to try out your own on the comment section.
