Death Star Planetarium lights up your bedroom

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 03:45 PM PDT

The Death Star may have been a dark and evil thing back in its time, but now it’s just so pretty.  Instead of blowing up planets, this Death Star makes the stars shine brightly even while you’re still in your house.  You don’t even need to go outside anymore, you can just sit inside with this Star Wars Death Star Planetarium and stare up at the stars.

This planetarium would also work as a night light for little kids who need comforted in the dark by something bright and shiny.  Of course this isn’t advised for kids under 3 years of age due to choking hazards.  To keep it powered it requires 3 AA batteries, that are obviously not included.  Once this comes out in August you’ll be able to purchase one of these for $29.99.  Of course if you’re feeling impatient you can go ahead and pre-order one now.

Batman Tumbler Golf Cart

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 02:35 PM PDT

Golf carts are fun, but they just look so puny.  Instead of riding around in some incredibly slow and fragile looking golf cart, you need this Batman inspired golf cart.  Sure, it’s not going to be able to do nearly as many tricks as the tumbler in the Batman movies, but at least you’ll get to look cool while cruising around at the high speed of 15 miles an hour.

This just happens to have been created by a Warner Bros. employee who works in LA.  Hopefully his creation will soon be a part of the tour of the studio, at least it should be added.  There is no current tutorial or any hint on how this was made.  This is just a picture that someone captured while on the studio grounds, so there really isn’t much information at all to go with it.

Acer reveals AS5745 and AS7745 Series notebooks for the US market

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Acer has released two more notebooks for the US market, where the AS5745 and AS7745 Series models are geared for those who are looking for something more than just the bare basics. The two notebooks will be one step ahead of entry-level models, featuring a range of specifications that include quad-core processing, a quartet of memory slots, a secondary hard disk drive support, branded discrete graphics, multi-touch screen technology, LED-backlit displays and/or Dolby Home Theater v3 for that added punch. Still, Acer surprisingly managed to keep the price surprisingly low at $699 upwards. To know more about either the AS5745 or AS7745, why not read on in the extended post?

Both lines of notebooks will feature a handsome, thin-and-light industrial design with a glossy black cover, although you might want to get a cleaning cloth ready always just in case as there will definitely be a whole lot of fingerprints to wipe away whenever your friends or colleagues take a gander at it. The AS5745 Series will come with a 15.6″ high-definition (HD) widescreen display at 1,366 x 768 resolution, while the AS7745 Series sports a 17.3″ HD+ widescreen display at 1,600 x 900 resolution. Models like the Aspire AS5745PG comes with a multi-touch screen display for a natural, intuitive way of interacting with applications and digital data, where it will have the Intel Core i7 processor working in tandem with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics for a first-rate multimedia experience. As for the Aspire AS7745G, this mobile powerhouse is outfitted with an Intel Core i7 processor, a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics chipset and a second hard drive support with Blu-ray support.

Dolby Home Theater v3 audio capability combined with S/PDIF support for digital speakers will deliver extraordinarily clear audio, and you need not worry about the operating system since every notebook is outfitted with Microsoft Windows 7 Premium. Apart from that, your wireless capability is also up to date since both series sport the Acer Nplify 802.11 b/g/n wireless chipset and a digital media reader. You can be sure that either way round, you won’t be short of processing firepower on the graphical front, which is always a good thing since you never know when you might end up as a gamer.

Dreamcast controller soap

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 06:15 PM PDT

The Sega Dreamcast was the best console ever to experience an early demise, and for many strange reasons at that even though it has many technologically advanced features among the crop of other consoles at that time. Well, with the craze of turning stuff into a soap form factor going around these days, why are we not surprised to see a Dreamcast controller that comes in the form of a soap, complete with colorful buttons and an analog stick? It tips the scales at 11 ounces, and was made with great quality glycerin soap. Of course, this is the perfect thing to scrub your sweaty palms down with after an intense gaming session if you’re a true blue gamer, but otherwise it might end up as a $19 soap that is too beautiful to use.

$800 Transformer toy for sale, includes sharp edges

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:51 PM PDT

What you see here is the Homage 1. It is not a toy, and yes, it certainly looks like a Transformer, especially one from one of those Michael Bay films.

This is a “unique artistic toy” created by Dustin Wallace, on display at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. I’m not certain if it is designed to just be “for display only”, but this is like one of things that toy collectors have under glass and don’t want any children to touch, ever.

Needless to say, we do have some video footage after the jump of it being bent up and folded into something that resembles a jet. At least it isn’t as weird-looking as that whatever it was flying machine that Megatron from the Michael Bay films transformed into.

This piece of art is clearly an homage to all transforming robots everywhere, be they Transformers, Go-Bots, or any other no-name toy company that tried to cash-in on that eighties fad. Is it any wonder why it is called the Homage 1? I wonder if the Homage 2 will be some sort of Rubik’s Cube or one of those other puzzle games of that flash-in-the-pan early eighties fad.

You can actually buy an Homage 1 for a price of $800. Check my Source for a link, and you might want to do it quick as only 100 are being made.

Western Digital 1TB My Book AV DVR expander ready for World Cup season

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:50 PM PDT

With England heading into the second round of the World Cup to face off with the Germans, both Al and I are happy that the Three Lions have started to click although Jermain Defoe would need to be more prolific in front of goal, while the rest of the boys ought to start making their chances count since with the Germans, they really aren’t beaten until the scoreline says so and they are on the bus (or in this case, plane) back to Germany. What does that have to do with the Western Digital 1TB My Book AV DVR expander, you ask? Well, it is useful to record those immortal moments that are broadcasted on TV for all eternity – or at least, until your data gets wiped out in a catastrophe or you overwrite it with newer material.

The Western Digital 1TB My Book AV DVR expander works great by helping users expand their DVR recording capacity instantly through a simple action of attaching the TiVo Verified compatible device with TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD DVRs, providing you with up to 120 hours of high-definition (HD) television programming. The drive itself can connect via USB and eSATA connections, and has also been verified to play nice with Dish Network and DirecTV DVRs. Apart from that, Western Digital is also working with other major satellite, cable and telecom companies in order to integrate its DVR expander technology into set-top boxes worldwide.

This allows you to rest easy, knowing that you won’t miss a single moment of the World Cup in South Africa this year, capturing the sounds of vuvuzelas for posterity to show your grandkids many years from now. Not only that, Western Digital also has a heart for mother nature with their WD GreenPower Technology that produces extremely little heat despite being placed in a cramped, gadget-rich entertainment center. You can also hook it up to a game console, Blu-ray Disc player, WD TV media player or other media playback device if the need arises, and its enclosure was specially designed to isolate these AV drives from the shock and vibration. Each purchase will cost you $149.99, small price to pay considering the memories it can record for all time.

Iomega Skin-branded hard drives ready to hit the US market

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:41 PM PDT

Iomega is a trusted name when it comes to data protection, and this time round they have just rolled out a new line of Iomega Skin branded Hard Drives, where you get to choose from a trio of different 500GB portable hard drives which will feature unique designs and colors that scream, “Who says portable storage has to be boring?” Definitely not meant for the older generation who want something boring and normal, the Iomega Skin hard drives will boast custom Skin-branded graphics that are guaranteed to stand out in a burst of hip culture when compared to others that you see in today’s hard drive market.

Suffice to say, all three models will connect to your computer via USB 2.0, although it would have been nice to see Iomega take the plunge into the world of USB 3.0 connectivity as more and more devices in the computing world start to support that standard. After all, transferring a full 500GB worth of data is no mean feat, and you would definitely wait a whole lot less if you have the speed of USB 3.0 on your side. Anyways, back to the Iomega Skin hard drives – the first among the three would be the “Radical” Skin Hard Drive model that features a retro Skin-branded printed logo design on a black top with a vibrant yellow base, helping create a look that stands apart from any other portable hard drive. As for the “Red Hot” Skin Hard Drive model, you get a “Skin” Swipe logo printing on a red top with a black base, resulting in a definition of hip and hot for today’s young iconoclastic computer user.

Last but not least would be the “Knock Out” Skin Hard Drive model that boasts a dark, mysterious aura with a “Skin” Gothic logo design on a silver top with a black base. All it takes is a single glance of this portable hard drive and you can expect the green eyed monster to rear its head in their hearts. Since all three models rely on an USB interface, you need not lug around additional power supplies on your travels, thanks to the magic of plug and play. They are also equipped with Iomega’s standard Drop Guard protection for added safety for your precious data in the event of accidental drops as long as they are no higher than 51 inches and fall onto industrial carpet. Expect each of these new Skin portable hard drives to retail for $119.99 a pop.

Nine-year old sends camera into space

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:35 PM PDT

Some of you might remember when we reported the two MIT students who managed to take pictures of the curvature of the Earth with about 150 dollars worth of materials. It would appear that they aren’t the only ones, and their efforts have been imitated by a nine-year-old.

Yes, this boy, Isaac Kubas, managed to build the apparatus that took the cool picture which you see to the right. I’m certain from what the mother says that he had some help, at least with the higher math skills.

His invention had a camera that snapped one picture each minute, and they tracked it with a cell phone GPS. They actually lost the signal during their experiment, and thought it was lost somewhere in Illinois. It was actually found about 125 miles away from its starting point of Austin, Texas.

Well, this is definitely one giant step in the life of Isaac Kubas, and he plans on entering his project for his 4H club. Oh man, how would you like to be one of the other kids at that science fair? Do you honestly think that your baking soda volcano will stand a chance to the kid who made a space-faring balloon? I didn’t think so.

Since Isaac is the second person that we have reported on who has done this, then we should really call this hobby something. How about “curvature ballooning”?

Vortex Cannon can bring down the house

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:12 PM PDT

I found this particular device reminded me of a handheld gun that I saw in Minority Report. In the film, Tom Cruise managed to spin this weapon, Wild West Style, and it created a blast of air that was more than enough to “blow the man down”.

The Vortex Cannon is much heavier, but it is capable of shooting a ring-shaped cloud that is capable of traveling at 200 miles per hour. This is the “smoke ring” that you see in the picture, and is formed by the “condensation in the rapidly moving gas”.

I have a video of it being demonstrated in a very Three Little Pigs way. Here, the Vortex Cannon plays the role of the Big Bad Wolf as it blows away a house of straw, sticks, and bricks. Check it out after the jump.

Spoiler alert! The house of bricks does tumble after being met with the high shock of the Vortex Cannon. Of course, I think there really should have been mortar in between the bricks, and it really is more of a wall of bricks than a house. Besides, it only half-way crumbles. Otherwise, I think the moral of The Three Little Pigs is still sound.

I would imagine that the Vortex Cannon could be used as a weapon, rather than this Mythbusters-style demonstration here. I’m not certain if you would classify it as a “weapon of mass destruction”, though.
