The Wooden Mast Humidifier Posted: 14 Jan 2010 03:00 PM PST Most humidifiers plug into your wall and look pretty boring.  They’re usually plastic and sometimes bulky.  Well this humidifier is far different from the rest, purely by looks alone.  I’m not sure that I’ve ever even seen a wooden humidifier.  Then it manages to stand out even further by not having a single electronic part.  Instead it goes for a lo-tech solution that still manages to work as a normal humidifier.  Except, less noisy of course. It’s made out of Japanese cypress, which means your room is going to have a nice scent to go with it.  You just add water to the boat part of the mast, then the water is sucked up into the mast and dispersed into the air you breathe.  Despite that the wood is rot-resistant, after a while the center of the mast might start to change colors a little bit.  You can purchase the Mast Humidifier for 6,300 Yen or about $69. Polaroid Is Recreating Their Classic Cameras Posted: 14 Jan 2010 02:00 PM PST Polaroid is one of those household names that will likely be remembered for a long time.  Their instant pictures brought joy to a great deal of people who were used to having to wait at least a week to see their handy work.  After digital cameras became popular Polaroid was never the same again.  They made attempts to keep up with the times by creating digital cameras that also printed pictures.  However, they didn’t exactly catch on.  Well now Polaroid is going for a different angle, they’re bringing back their original models. Yes, that’s right Polaroid is going to create brand new cameras that take pictures just like they did in the good old days.  Truthfully I was recently considering trying to find a working Polaroid camera, purely because I enjoy older cameras.  However, I think I’ll wait until these shiny new versions come out to give them a whirl.  The new camera, PIC 1000, will offer instant color photos.  Each one requires Polaroid Color 600 Instant Film, they come with 10 pictures on each pack.  You can expect these to start being released sometime this year and sometime closer to time they’ll probably release the pricing information. You & Me Wall Clock keeps track of other time zones Posted: 14 Jan 2010 01:00 PM PST If you’re in a long distance relationship, doomed to spend a fortune on phone bills and traveling expenses, then this would make for a cute Valentine’s Day gift.  Instead of just showing your current time, it shows the time of your significant other too.  It would make it easier to figure out when to call and be a constant reminder that the one you love is in a whole different time zone. Alright, so it is a little bittersweet instead of being actually sweet.  Yet what isn’t when you’re attempting the long distance situation?  This clock comes with a total of 6 different blank spare hands.  That should make it extremely complicated to try to actually read your own time.  Hopefully you’ll be able to get used to the clock after a little while though.  This is probably going to be a gift for a female though, considering it only comes in bright pink.  You can purchase it for $54.95 through Wrapables. Cable Caps organize your USB cables Posted: 14 Jan 2010 12:17 PM PST I, like many people have a drawer, and that drawer is filled with cables.  If I need to find a cable, I get the joy of attempting to match the gadget with the cable.  It’s absolutely never fun and it’s almost always time consuming.  Every single time I open that drawer I feel like I need 3 weeks of therapy.  For those of you that aren’t much better than myself and want to change your ways, there is always this method.  These quirky little guys will keep your cords organized so that you always know what you’re dealing with. The Cable Caps definitely have a childish spin on cable management and it’s possible that’s just not your thing.  Yet if you do prefer a slightly more whimsical method of organizing, then these will work out great.  They are sold in sets of 3, so you’ll have to buy two sets in order to get the full collection.  They come in an egg version, a printer, eyeball, lightbulb, camera and a phone.  One set will cost you $7.99, but you will have to wait a little bit before these get to you.  Right now you can only pre-order,  so it could take a while to make its way to your doorstep. Gravity Ruler is a simple way to weigh luggage Posted: 14 Jan 2010 11:35 AM PST For those of you that travel a great deal by way of airplane, you’re constantly dealing with worrying about keeping your luggage lightweight enough.  It’s not going to be too bad on your way from home to somewhere else.  However, when you’re coming back home it always seems like your luggage has gained a bit of weight.  Instead of having to worry whether or not you’re going to be charged outrageous fees, you could keep this very portable scale in your bag and know exactly where you stand. Then after you’ve weighed things out, you could always make the choice to readjust some things or even have items mailed to your home.  The device is incredibly simplistic, it’s merely a bungee cord that measures the pull of the weight and then lets you know how much the bag weighs.  These were created by some design students.  However, it’s not exactly what you’d call a concept.  They already created a batch of 35 of these and took them to the Travel Trading Fair in Milan.  They managed to actually sell out within an hour.  As successful as their first run went, I imagine we’ll be seeing these in stores at some point. Steadicam steadies your iPhone videos Posted: 14 Jan 2010 10:57 AM PST For those of you that use your iPhone for video on a regular basis, this odd accessory might make life a little less shaky for you.  At the very least it’ll make your video stop bouncing so bad you give viewers motion sickness.  Of course it’s debatable whether anyone would care enough about a low resolution video to buy an accessory to steady the shot.  However, if you are extremely reliant on your iPhone’s video this could be a nice addition to your iPhone accessories. Frankly, it seems to me that if you cared enough to do this then you would probably just buy a regular video camera with a better quality image.  Plus part of the perk of catching video on your iPhone is that it’s much more portable and it’s always handy.  If you had to pop this on it, it would take away that ability to just catch a quick video.  The Steadicam is lightweight though and at least a little portable.  Obviously it’s not going to be something you stash in your pocket, but it is portable. Well, guess what? There is a new device that falls under the eneloop brand – the eneloop music booster. This is basically a rechargeable DC 9V battery unit that will target digital audio players and other music devices, making it the latest addition to their 'eneloop universe' product series. You won’t be able to get the eneloop music booster right after reading this post though, as this nifty portable rechargeable battery will only be available sometime later this spring, retailing for $149.99 at music specialty stores nationwide. The Sanyo eneloop music booster is aimed to help musicians support a green lifestyle, where reusing and recycling are extremely high on the agenda. Among the main features found on this rechargeable 9V power supply would be its ability to be used just about anywhere as a form of portable power source. Apart from that, it boasts dual output that is capable of powering a couple of 9V music devices simultaneously. Of course, there are some limitations to this configuration since the maximum output of 2,000mA is achieved if you’re using only one, while utilizing both would see the output drop to 1,000mA per port. Apart from that, you get voltage boosting technology that helps maintain a steady voltage until all power is exhausted, helping protect your device at the same time from power fluctuations. With this approach, you get consistent sound quality at the same time. Knowing just how much juice you have left is just as important, which is why the eneloop music booster comes with a 3-stage remaining power indicator that shows battery level at a glance even when you are using it. If you have more than 60% of juice left, it will be green, while 30% to 60% remaining is indicated in Orange, and less than 30% will see Red rearing its head. You can even bring it outdoors with you since it is water resistant, although submerging it underwater is still a no-no. Sealevel embedded computing solutions Posted: 14 Jan 2010 08:30 AM PST Sealevel has unveiled its latest Relio R5200 embedded computer that brings pocket sized power – well, not literally, but you do gain a whole host of I/O features alongside the benefits of solid-state operation sans no fans or other moving parts. Within its chassis lies a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor that can run without a fan as long as the mercury does not go above 45°C. Despite coming with a compact chassis, it does boast expansion slots for one PCI Express X16 and one full-height PCI card, and is capable of supporting up to 4GB RAM, making it the ideal workhorse if you happen to be working in harsh, industrial environments. You can choose to throw in a 2.5" solid-state SATA hard drive, where there is a choice of Microsoft Windows or Windows Embedded operating systems. Of course, those who don’t like the Big M can always settle for Linux, but to take full advantage of the Relio’s design, it would be best to settle for a SSD as it comes without any moving parts.
